Basketball Players Not Coming Back Next Year

According to TBS, Frank Martin has had his end of season meetings with all the players last week. Smith, Richardson and Leonard will be moving on. Slawson will probably also be leaving, although, it's not entirely clear at this point. Williams will likely be back next year, but it's not certain. Frank has given him till July to show more of a commitment to the team. He says he wants to be part of team and graduate at Carolina. Geathers is likely to be put on medical hardship but that is not 100% certain either. So this opens up a minimum of 3 but more likely 5 scholarships......even 6 if Williams does't return.

That sucks for these guys. It's not Frank's fault, but man, what a bad deal. Makes you think twice about committing to a young unproven coach...

Richardson and Williams were the only 2 players that deserve a scholarship out of Horn's player's. Richardson and Williams both improved throughout the season. Slawson, Smith, Leonard were terrible, kind of hope Slawson does not return. This is just as much their fault as it Horn's. Horn let his players slack off and the players just went through the motions. The players rarely ever did extra work.

Richardson played better last season, but I'll trust that Frank knows more about their work ethic/commitment than we do. So if all the Horn guys sans Bruce and Brenton are out, right now we have:

Ellington / Williams / Shaw
Johnson / Notice
Thornwell / McKie / Steele
Carrera / Kacinas
Chatkevicius / Ringer

So true....and once you get used to it, it's a hard habit to break.

I feel bad for the players, but we know that Martin had to do some housecleaning to bring in his type of players. Can't wait to see what he will build in the next 3 years.

I don't think I could say that Horn let his players slack off. I'm sure he wanted them to do more and he tried to hold players accountable. Horn was good at finding talent (Ellington, Gill, Galloway, Harris, Holloway, Cooke), but he was bad at putting them in the right position to play well. Hell even Lakeem could've been a really good players, but Horn ruined his development. Horn isn't the type of coach that can effectively connect with players and successfully push them to do more. That's the problem.

Because of that there was never any progress. They developed a losing mentality and culture, and accepted it. Martin won't stand for that, and he clearly got frustrated with these guys and is kicking them out the door for players he feels will work hard, put in extra effort and commit to winning basketball.

I'll be honest I didn't watch much basketball during the Horn era, I dont know who the hell could of, but have a lot of respect for those that did. I only missed about 5 home games this past season and its clear that Martin wants the best out of his players 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. I just remember coach Martin constantly saying his players did not do extra work, which was the most frustrating for him. If they weren't doing extra work this season, then they never did extra work while Horn was the coach. Whenever Martin talked about players doing extra work, Bruce Ellington was the only name you heard. I am 100% sure Carerra would have done extra work if he was physically able too. Horn could find talent but he could not develop it at all. If you cant connect with players that you recruited and push them to better themselves then you should not be a coach at any level. Horn seemed like he didnt have a back bone and let his players just go through the motions no matter how talented they were. I also believe it is up to the player to push themselves and if the players are not pushing themselves then they dont need to be on scholarship. And like you said it looks like Martin is weeding out the players unworhty of scholarships, and is recruiting players that want to better themselves and will put in the extra work needed to change the culture of the USC basketball program.

Talk about a massive overrating in recruiting.
Kid was a four-star prospect, and turned out to be nothing special.

He wouldn't bother me if he tried, but he showed virtually no heart, which is probably why he didn't play much.
