I would bet that it is not only unoriginality but also some research out there that says people will spend money on seeing things they are familiar with or nostalgic for...and it may even be easier for studios to market films that they do not have to fully explain in their trailers or on their posters. The basic reasoning there is that there is already a fan base for the original that may be at least curious about the remake-which will drive the opening weekend numbers and help spread the film by word of mouth. on the other hand, I could be giving the studios too much credit.

I saw Depp on Letterman last week and he said Tonto is not the Tonto of old and not just some aimless sidekick, whatever that means.
