A combination of cardio and resistance training is the most effective at losing weight.

I've been running regularly/lifting weights now for about 2 months and i've lost 20lbs. Find you a good scenic route to run and some music to listen to and you'll surprise yourself with how far yOu can go. It's a great stress reliever too.

Actually there are quite a few.

I run about 10-12 miles a week and I find it very boring. But I do it because it's a cheap way to help keep the pounds off as I've gotten older. I have found that signing up for a race or setting a goal for the near future helps me get out and actually do it. Good luck Lant.

I ran the Cowtown Marathon a few weeks ago. Well, more like yogged it. But, it was to prove a point related to something else. I would certainly not call myself a "runner" but I do it enough, partially out of necessity. My personal opinion is long, slow running is not only inefficient for fitness, it's bad for your health, but that's a different subject.

Good on ya for wanting to get yourself moving.

I am a casual runner. Meaning I try to run once or twice a week about 4-miles or so. I did train for and ran one marathon about 8 years ago.

I generally enjoy things like cycling more. But running is great especially if you travel for work. A pair of running shoes and shorts and you can pretty much exercise almost anywhere in the world for free.

This. My fiancÚ and I run about 3 1/2 marathons a year but if you ever get interested, cycling is an excellent alternative. Works different muscle group but it is better on your knees. Generally you want to keep the running mileage down (10-15) per week if you're being casual. I'd also suggest interval training. Good way to shock the body.

As a former collegiate cross country and track athlete, and now as a high school cross country and track coach, I'd like to know why you think this too.

To the OP, good luck. Running is my passion.

I don't buy this idea that running is unhealthy. The reason most people get injured running is poor mechanics or doing too much too fast (too much volume or too much intensity too early in your training when your body isn't ready to handle the stress). I highly recommend reading this...

http://www.amazon.com/Born-Run-Hidde...ds=born+to+run

I took a lot of time off after college and gained a lot of weight. I tried getting back into running a few times and both times I suffered injuries (for doing too much too fast). After reading that and having the opportunity to work with a world class runner (former world record holder and Olympian) on a daily basis, I have gotten into minimalist running. I've been injury free since then. Most of my team wears shoes that are minimalist shoes and we have had no injuries since then. The premise behind Born to Run, and minimalist running, is that normal running shoes have so much cushion in the heel that we heel strike as we run which is an unnatural running form thus is bad mechanics. You also gain a sense of confidence with the cushion so you land more violently. By lowering the heel to toe ratio (the difference between the height of your heel and toe from the ground) in the shoe, and having less cushion in the heel, you run more natural (how you would run barefoot, that is fore- to mid-foot striking) thus landing softer, leading to better mechanics, which in return leads to a healthier runner. Obviously, some people are going to have some problems, especially if you are used to normal running shoes. It took me a while to get used to these shoes because there is a lot more stress on your calves, but once you slowly build up your mileage in those shoes, they feel great.

Sorry for such a long post, but as a runner, I feel the need to defend running as it not being healthy and back it up with why I think that. I realize running isn't for everyone. Some people are able to handle different stresses, but I think there is a reason that most people experience running injuries. I guess I was lucky, I was able to peak at 90 miles a week my senior year in college with no injuries.

Lant, if you have any questions that I may be able to help you with, feel free to ask.

Do you drink any sodas, teas or coffees?

Do you eat because it is time to eat or only when you are hungry?

When you eat, do you add salt and condiments to your meals?

Are your meals prepared at home or do you eat out regularly?

Do you take your time when you eat or eat quickly?

Do you eat until you are stuffed or do you watch your portions?

Do you drink water?

Do you sleep more than 6 hours in a 24 hour period?

How many push ups can you do before you go to your knees?

How many sit-ups can you do before you have to rest?

How many minutes can you run before you have to stop?

Do you eat more than three times per day?

Do you watch tv while you eat?

Do you eat when you are bored?

Do you eat to be social?

Do you consume alcoholic beverages everyday?

Do you have any friends that are on diets?

Do you have any friends that run?

Are you under a lot of stress?
