Tennessee will play host to Top247 and U.S. Army All-American defensive end/tight end Jalyn Holmes (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) on the weekend of April 20. Holmes has been considered a Virginia Tech lean for most of the process, but there is talk that he may now have his eyes open a bit more to out-of-state options. The Vols and Florida State are two programs to watch here.

Holmes came into the event as the No. 30 player in the Rivals100 and played well in a star-studded group of defensive lineman.

"He has pure physical gifts," Friedman said. "He is filling out really well and has improved his technique which showed."

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Norfolk (Va.) Lake Taylor standout is high on Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina, USC, Virginia and Virginia Tech, however it seems like the Seminoles are the program standing out. Holmes keeps in daily contact with the Florida State staff and he also appreciates the opportunity the Seminoles are giving him to play tight end.

Holmes has added significant muscle to his 6-foot-6 frame and hasn’t lost a bit of the quickness or athleticism that makes him one of the most sought-after jumbo athletes in the 2014 class. In addition to the invite to The Opening, Holmes was named the defensive line MVP by the camp coaching staff. He is ranked as the No. 4 weakside defensive end for 2014 by 247Sports, but also is being recruited as a tight end by several programs. 247Sports Crystal Ball right now has Holmes’ recruitment as a dead heat between Virginia Tech and Florida State at 50-50.

Holmes is a prospect who sees action on both sides of the ball. He is tall with a wiry build and could be recruited on either offense or defense, though we feel his best fit at the next level will be at tight end. He needs to keep improving playing strength, filling out his lengthy frame, and continue to add good mass, which should come with time in a college weight program. As a tight end he has experience working from an in-line position as well as flexed out. As a receiving target he can let the ball get into his body at times, but overall displays good strong hands.

Our coaches need to start doing some work in VA. Feel like we are porly positioned in a state that is so close and are missing out on good to great talent.

It is just very hard to pull kids out of Virginia.
First you have VT and UVA.
Maryland recruits VA, West Virginia, UNC, Pitt, NC STate, Duke, Wake, Kentucky, Vanderbilt.

Wish we had a bigger print there...a huge talent base...we seem to be able to pull kids in baseball though...so I don't know what the issue is.
Maybe it is like recruiting Texas..lots of athletes but already too many fishing lines in the barrell?

The 6-feet-5, 225-pound Holmes is the No. 83 prospect and No. 4 weak-side end in the 247Composite, and he certainly looks the part. He's built extremely well, and has long, powerful arms. Holmes explodes off the ball, and when focused was difficult to control. At times, though, he could have done a better job using that reach to fend off the offensive linemen. Holmes also ran a few pass routes and was fluid. It was easy to see why some schools like him at tight end.

The 6-feet-5, 225-pound four-star weak-side defensive end from Norfolk (Va.) Lake Taylor has so many scholarship offers he has "lost track." South Carolina became the most recent college to offer, doing so last week.

At this stage, Holmes isn't saying who stands out although it is believed that Florida State and Virginia Tech are among his leading contenders. Holmes hasn't made any visits since checking out North Carolina back in March.

"Everybody is coming about the same," Holmes said. "Everybody is coming hard."

A few schools, though, are pursuing him harder than the others, according to Holmes.

"I'd say Florida State, Virginia Tech, UNC and Tennessee," Holmes said.

Next on the schedule for Holmes: A visit to Clemson for team camp June 12. He also took part in a camp there last year.

Asked if there were any other colleges he wanted to visit this summer, Holmes replied, "Florida State. They're a school I've always wanted to go to."

At the Richmond RCS, Holmes used his natural physical gifts to make it a long day for the offensive linemen. His speed combined with a 6-foot-5 frame made it very hard for offensive linemen to get a good push on him. There is still plenty of room left for Holmes to fill out, which means that added strength will really benefit him, especially when he tries to make a move to the inside.

There are a lot of differing opinions about Holmes' future. He is extremely quick off the line and has good hand technique. At 6-foot-5, 235 pounds, Holmes can catch passes well, so he could play defense or offense. Most of his offers are for defensive end and that's where he wants to play, but he has struggled at times when going up against bigger offensive linemen who have above-average lateral quickness. It is going to be interesting to see if Holmes has bulked up so that he can handle bigger offensive linemen while playing defense or if he looks like a tight end trying to play defense.

Most Agile: Jalyn Holmes is a long, athletic defensive end who has great lateral quickness and a lot of overall suddenness. There were a lot of players who could lay claim to this title, but the way Holmes was able to take two steps to the outside and change directions to beat the offensive linemen inside was pretty impressive.

Just a month and a half ago, Holmes unofficially visited Virginia Tech for the April 20 spring game. At that time, Holmes appeared to have the Hokies among his favorites. But recently, he tweeted a top three of Ohio State, Florida State and Clemson. He seems to have soured on Virginia Tech, though he hasn't completely eliminated the Hokies. It's clear though that they'll have to do plenty of work to get back in Holmes' good graces.

Deke is just starting to go there after recruiting for UNC. It's going to take a few years, but he's a good recruiter and I think it will start to pay dividends soon.
