All of Piccolo Spoleto is free and will have some great events. As for Spoleto, check out the concerts at the Cistern (CofC campus) - best outdoor venue in all of Charleston (and maybe the state). This is only time of year they have shows there. And you can listen for free outside the gate if you aren't sure if you will dig the tunes.

I enjoy the chamber music at dock street theatre. Classical music by some of the great composers written for 2-4 players to be played in smaller rooms. Gotta see the Dock St, America's first theater. Not free though, and tickets will sell out if you wait too long. But always fun to see these unreal performers.

Piccolo is put on by the City and is the more affordable festival. It has some free events- outdoor concerts, the artists in Marion Square, etc., and there are some moderately priced events- in the $20- $30 range. The actual Spoleto Festival has the world-class performers and is pretty expensive. The concerts on the Cistern- usually jazz- are pretty wonderful. I suggest you go online and get the information for both and pick what you like. It's a lot of fun to be in Charleston during the festival even if you don't go to anything. The city is really alive and vibrant.
