Default COCKYTALK SPRING PRACTICE REPORT: 3/28/13 (Scrimmage)

Spring Practice Number seven: 3/28/13 (Scrimmage)

The scrimmage today was not a thing of beauty because the coaches loaded
both sides with younger / more inexperienced players to see where the team
stands at this point in the Spring. There was however a few gems during the
practice and some players who were bordering between the second and third
units made a bid for themselves this afternoon. There was only 1 TD scored
during the short scrimmage, and there are still a few question marks with the
team that are starting to emerge as problems that need major work. The most
blaring of those is our Field Goal team (more on that later). Connor Mitch
started the spring running what amounts to the third unit offense and Brendon
Nosovitch has been the quarterback running the second unit (some reps with
the first squad), even so, Mitch and Noso have been fairly close “In My Opinion”
but today, Connor made a really nice push for moving up the depth chart with
his solid performance out there. …. Here is a quick rundown of the scrimmage:
  • The ball was spotted at the South 25 to begin the scrimmage
Dylan Thompson was up for his only reps of the day completing his first
pass to Shaq Roland on a curl route for 17 yards on the play. After throwing
an imcomplete pass again to Roland on a deep post route, and a loss of three
yards on a keeper, he overthrew Nick Jones on a quick curl route in the
middle of the field and the drive ended with a Punt.
  • The ball was spotted at the North 25
Brendon Nosovitch got the second series and started out hot, but ended with
The offense failing to get into the end zone. This series started with a really
nice run off the left tackle by Mike Davis who broke several tackles at the
line to eventually gain 24 yards. Noso hit Shamier Jeffery on a short curl
for a pick up of 10 yards, and Davis carried up the middle for three. Noso
found Davis on a check down to pick up three yards to the 36, and a pass
attempt to KJ Brent was broken up on a nice play over the top by Vic Hampton.
On third and short Nosovitch over threw a wide open Brent on the left
sideline and the coaches went for it on 4th and short. Brendon hit Brent on a
quick out on the left side for 14 yards and a first down, down to the South
20 yard line. From that point the drive fell apart when Jarrell Adams dropped
a pass near the goal line, and Noso threw a swing pass to Brandon Wilds for
no gain. Noso got heavy pressure up the middle and had to dump the ball
off quickly for Roland but Shaq had not gotten into the route and ball hit
him in the back of the legs for an incompletion. The team lined up for a 37
yard field goal, and Nick St Germain missed wide left, and he was allowed
a “mulligan” and hit the second attempt.
  • The ball was then placed at the South 25
It was Connor Mitch’s turn to run the offense and the first series ended
with a three and out as Mitch handed to Davis up the middle for 5 yards.
Connor hit Roland on a quick out to the left side, but the route was played
well and stopped for a loss of 2 yards. Mitch was then sacked by Phillip Dukes
to end the drive. He was allowed to stay up and the ball was placed back at
the South 25 again.
Mitch rolled to his right and found Adams open on a drag route to that side
and picked up 32 yards to the North 47. Connor then threw complete to Buster
Anderson on a square out to the right sideline for 13 yards. With the ball at
the 34, Mitch hit David Wilkins with a WR screen from the left side for 11 more
yards, then threw a slip screen to Jody Fuller from the right side to pick up 5
more yards, down to the 18. There was an extremely high snap from center that
went well over Connor’s head and the ball was picked up by Mitch back at the
30 for a loss of 12. Mitch was then sacked by Darius English for a loss of
Another 10 yards and from the 40, the team punted the ball to end the drive.
  • The ball was placed at the North 25
Perry Orth was given the offense for a series and he started out throwing complete
to Tevin Bradshaw for no gain on a wide receiver screen. Brandon Wilds carried
up the middle for 10 yards and a first down at the 35. He got the handoff on the
next play going to the left but was brought down in the backfield for a loss of 3.Orth
hit Drew Owens on the Left sideline for pickup of 6 yards, and then threw complete
to Bradshaw for 8yards in a come back / hitch route. Orth kept the ball on the read
option and lost two yards, then he fumbled the snap from center and had to fall on
the loose ball for a loss of 6 yards. On 3rd and 16, Perry threw complete on a slip
screen to Dwayne Duckett but the play was brought down for another loss of 1
and the team punted to stop the drive.
  • The ball is spotted at the South 25
Brendon Nosovitch gets another set of reps here and runs the entire set of reps
using the read option offense, keeping on the first play and losing 1 yard. Brendon
hit Shaq Roland on a quick curl on the lest side, and Shaq made a fantastic spin
move to shake Sidney Rhodes and picked up another 15 yards to midfield before
being brought down. Noso threw high to an open Jody Fuller in the middle of the
field, then threw behind a wide open Kwinton Smith down the middle. The final
play of this drive, Brendon fired a ball to Shamier Jeffery on the right sideline
but the ball was thrown at least 5 feet over his head on a very poorly thrown ball
and the team punted to end the drive.
  • The ball was placed at the North 30 for the final drive of the day.
Kendrick Salley carries up the middle on a read option play for a pick up of 12
yards. Another keeper by Salley on the ZR to the other side gains 2. Connor
Mitch fires complete to Drew Owens on a quick out, and he was almost
decapatated by Kelvin Rainey for a short gain of 3 yards to the 47. Connor had
to scramble to avoid a sack, and gains 7 yards. Mitch throws complete to Salley
with a swing pass to the right that gains 9 yards. Mitch throws incomplete to
Shamier Jeffery on an out pattern. Kendrick Salley carries up the middle off
of the Read Option and picks up 1 and a first down. Connor is sacked for a loss
of 5 by Mason Harris and a quick screen attempt loses another 2 yards. At the
end of this play, TJ Holloman and Cody Waldrop start shoving each other walking
back to the line, and it ended up in a pretty good fight between the two. It went
on for several seconds before the coaches broke it up. On the next play, Jeffery
beat Sidney Rhodes badly on an out and up, and Rhodes ended up having to
grab his jersey and ride him down the sidelines in front of the ref, or the deep
pass would have ended in a TD. With the penalty the ball was spotted at he
South 25 and Devin Potter carries on an impressive run off the read option in
the middle of the line and gained 15 yards to the 10. Mitch fired complete to
Wilkins for 4 before he was LEVELED by TJ Holloman. Potter carries up the
middle for one yard, and on 3rd and goal from the 5. Mitch throws a really nice
short fade to Shamier in the left back corner of the end zone for the only
TD of the scrimmage.

The team lined up for one shot at a 35 yard line (45 yard attempt) to see what side
run sprints. The field goal was missed wide right by St Germain and the offense
had to run after he scrimmage.

Giving my opinion on the practice here, but I am becoming more and more a fan
of Kendrick Salley. The guy is mired in the depth charts behind Davis and Wilds
but has been given a lot of reps this spring. He ran the ball extremely well today,
and reminds me a lot of the way Kenny Miles runs the ball. Very quick moves,
and runs with his shoulders squared and his head up. Seems to be gaining a lot of
confidence as the spring moves on too. I also like that Shaq is starting to run more
North / South after catching the ball and not trying to juke and run lateral to elude
the defenders. Jarrell Adams is not having a real good spring to this point. The dropped
pass at the goal line was probably the best thrown pass of the scrimmage by Mitch
and was on the numbers. That has to be caught! Also very impressed with Connor
Mitch. Showing a strong arm and some mobility in the pocket. The drag route to
Adams was a thing of beauty. Not so impressed with the field goal kicking from
what I saw today. He missed two of three from what is considered normal / average
distance, both wide. This from a red shirt scholarship kicker. He has the leg because
he can drill them from 55 with no one in front of him. He needs to work on this
game with the full team. Right now he’s not dialed in.

Next Scrimmage is Tuesday.

They did a great job in the run game. Held their own, on straight pass
plays, but they need to work on protecting against a blitz. The second
unit needs some work at Tackle. Couple of sacks by our DEs on those
units. The Ends got in there too easily and too quickly.

Can someone help me out. Why do some of the lineman wear those padded things on the outside of their helmets? is it just extra precaution to head injury?

I really think it's a PR thing for the school. They had a short report on
them on the local news down here during the fist week of practice. It's
something the coaching staff came up with to try to show the team is
concerned with safety. They're only worn by the O/Line and interior
defensive line guys. It doesn't really offer a lot more protection IMO.
I really think it's more of a idea by the Sports Director and PR people
to show the school is concerned with the concussion issues in
College and pros.

There was an nfl player for the 49ers, back in the 90s that wore that type of helmet. I think it may have been Charles Haley, but I wouldn't swear to it. It was supposed to help with concussions. I always thought that it looked silly, but if it helped with safety, I'm all for it.

nice writeup. so out of all the lb's who played, who do you think was the most impressive? also, who received the most carries, and did the most with them of the rb's? do you think salley can make enough noise to break into the depth chart? who do you think has separated himself more, jeffery or roland? last question, as good as noso has been all last year, what do you think his problem is that he has been so inaccurate this spring?

What do you think of St. Germain? As you said above he has the leg to drill it from 55 so what gives? Is he just not on, or is he not very accurate? This guy is our best kicker and its a little disconcerting that he is having such trouble hitting kicks in spring practice

Mis typed it... it was supposed to be TJ Holloman. I'll go back and
change it in the report.

The starting Linebackers looked good. Again (IMO) I thought Rainey was
the class of the group.

Yes, Harris was playing the left Tackle spot when he got the sack today.
I would say second unit, but they were pretty much just filling spots
at that time, so not sure where they have him right now on the
depth chart.

Rainey IMO was the most active. Around the ball more, and made a
couple of really nice stops. ... The reps at RB were fairly even with the
four got carries. I don't think Wilds got as many reps but broke off a couple
of impressive runs inside. haven't seen the stats but just guessing I'd
think Davis with the two longer runs would be the leading rusher, and
maybe Salley second with Wilds and Potter at the end. I really thought
Miles should have gotten more carries his sophomore season than he
did, but Lattimore wasn't going to have his carries cut by the coaches.
Still, I thought he could have been a major contributor to the ground
attack, but I don't make those decision. .... In this case All I can say is
if Salley continues to look this way, and continues to improve, If I were
coaching this team, he'd get PT this season.
Roland by a wide margin. Shaq has had three really good practices in a
row now, and is starting to be a target the QBs look for in the 7 on 7
and 11 on 11. He's making the most of that too. Haven't seen him drop
a pass that is within his reach in those practices. I hope the light has
come on for him.
Not really sure about the problem the last couple of practices is with
Noso. He started out OK, and I think him being the experienced of the
two, he was given the #2 spot. Connor needs to work on running the
Zone Read offense, but today was a nice indicator of what we might be
seeing in a year or so. He can throw the ball very well, and has some
pocket sense about him. Not sure that'll equal freshman PT for him, but
the kid has a lot of potential. ..with Noso, maybe he's feeling the heat
and trying too hard to hold on to that position on the chart. Just a guess.

I think it's just a concentration issue. (my best guess). He hit two of
three from 55 with the tee last week, and had room to spare. He
has good form from what I can see, but missed that first one in real time
from 37 by a wide margin to the left. I think he's paying too much attention
to the rush (thinking about it) rather than just concentrating on hitting all
his marks and his timing.

I wouldn't worry about the kicking game. Landon Ard is the strongest and most experienced kicker on the team. Remember it was not Coach Robinson who gave St Germain the scholarship. Scholarship does not mean you are the best. Also As Spurticus pointed out, the scrimmage was for the younger less experienced players who will probably not start. Ard will be the kicker and he will be fine.

I really think it's more of a idea by the Sports Director and PR people
to show the school is concerned with the concussion issues in
College and pros.
The idea that its "just a PR thing" is simply not true.

They are meant to lessen the impact that those players who are in positions who constantly get helmet-to-helmet type contact on a regular basis, such as the lines. You're not going to have RBs, WRs, or defensive backs and linebackers gettin many hits like this in practice and scrimmages, but it's natural for linemen to knock helmets around in the trenches with other players. Studies have shown you do not have to have suffered a concussion to be vulnerable to degenerative brain disease later in life- simply having many blows to the head can cause it later in life. Using these pads in practice lessens this in non-game situations.
