Default The End of College Athletics as We Know It?

I don't know how many have been following this lawsuit, but it looks like major changes on the way for college sports.

They have already ruined college basketball. The NCAA Tournament has been almost unwatchable the basketball has been so bad.Now it surprises when a team reaches 60 points. Some teams have struggled to score 40 in the tournament and I don't think you can say its great defense.Teams are getting open shots they just can't shoot.

Disagree about that, I love college bball still.. refs suck but they always have. But this year's tourney was amazing, one of the best in years.

The one and done rule has hurt college bball, but it's better than not getting the talent at all (straight to NBA).

Did ya'll hear about the ref conspiracy in the Zona/UCLA game? SMH

Yeah, I don't think the tournament has been unwatchable. There is less emphasis on fundamentals, but I don't think that has ruined the game.

As for the lawsuit, I don't think there's anything to say except wait and see what happens. Too many scenarios to start speculating on right now imo.

The rich will just get richer faster. The money should go to the betterment of the universities not to the players. If these guys want to get paid they should got get a job doing something else, if you want to volunteer and learn how to get better at Football and get a free college education than meet our coaches on the practice field. This gig is an internship. Do interns a major corporations have the right to receive percentages of company profits? Of course not. It's no different.

The idea that these kids are victims annoys the shit out of me. How about all the students these schools jack tuition up on to pay for sports programs? These kids get room, board, books, education for free, it must be nice to walk away from school debt free because with the current college model it is impossible to do that anymore.

This tournament has been exciting.
As is every tournament.

The "tournament is unwatchable" and "college basketball sucks" because we aren't good.
That's just my opinion of why people say that.

I agree with both your points. If they want money for the games than I think they should just give them 10k a year as their share for the games and whatnot, but no scholarships or any other financial aid from the school. Lets see how they like it when they aren't giving free college education. These guys are spoiled and don't care if they cause future athletes to never get the same opportunities they had.

The biggest problem with our society is that no longer do we understand how business works. People think that the employee should make more than the owner and if the company is going bankrupt they still expect to make all their money. They don't care if they put them out of business as long as they get as much money as possible.

"Free college education" is a myth. The gap between what a full scholarship pays and the full cost of attendance can range from $2k to $5k per year, depending on the school.

BS. My friend played college football on a full ride and he said they tell them all the free money grants and aid to cover whatever their scholarship doesn't cover. Even if what you said is true. I sure as hell love to walk out of college with 10k in student loans rather than 100k. These guys don't have to take the scholarship. If they don't want their name used by the college don't go there.

What bothers me is that they are not allowed to work. A free college education is nice. The problem is, assuming they get no non-school financial support, their only outside income is what they can scrap by living together in cheap places and eating whatever is served at their school cafeterias (I do assume the training table stuff is great). That is going to be a cheap college experience. They should be able to work at least 15 hours a week, they could make a ton waiting tables and anywhere would hire them. That lets them profit off of their popularity and would allow the spirit of amateurism to continue.

My great grandfather was friends with Shug Jordan and was one of the families that would host Auburn players too far from home to go back for Thanksgiving. It was the original use of the "occasional meal" provision. So normally my great grandmother, grandmother and great aunt would cook for between 2-5 guys during the holiday.

Do something that will generate millions for the university. That seems as easy as what follows the bolded portion, right?

If you want to let them do that, than let them do that. But if they need money that badly they could probably get some additional financial aid based on income, and if not maybe they shouldn't be playing college football, just going to school and working like I did.

The FANS are what generate the money. The school doesn't even HAVE to even HAVE a college football team. I worked an internship, should I sue too because I did my little part in exchange for experience and training while the CEO made millions? Should all interns rise up and sue?

That would change everything. They get paid, they get taxed. They are employees, they have to have or pay for workers comp, etc.

Lets face it, if it were not for football or other sports, most "student-athletes" would not be in school because they were granted admission on lower standards. They get "Athletic Housing", access to better food, as well as a multi-million dollar building with tutors to get them through their education. These are items that regular students don't have access too, and if so would cost a lot extra. Getting paid on top of that does cross a line. Because they are good at a sport, they get a shot at an education that others with the same high school academic performance don't get. Their peers have to get a job, join the military, or go to a technical school to boost their grades to earn admission to a school like USC. There is a lot to be considered here and it is not black and white.
