Default COCKYTALK SPRING PRACTICE REPORT: 4/9/13 (Practice #12)

Spring Practice Number Twelve: (4/9/13)

Once again the team was in Shells today for the workout. So far this season the only
time the team has worn full pads was in one of the very early practices and the
scrimmages. This practice, like Fridays workout was very energetic and for the most
part, very good. During the one on ones, the defense was having their way with the
receivers. Very few completions from any of the QBs and their intended targets. The
few that were completed were closely contested, or reps where the WRs just wrestled
the ball away from the DB/LBs. As it was in the Scrimmage Saturday, Jadeveon
Clowney was at the field in street clothes and did not participate in the practice.
Damiere Byrd was in uniform and went through the positions drills, but did not get
any reps during the game situation part of practice.

During skels and 11 on 11, the coaches ran all those reps like a light scrimmages,
spotting the ball at the 20 and letting the QBs run the offense moving the chains
until the defense stopped the drive. They also let the guys do some full contact with
limitations. During this part of practice, Dylan Thompson was definitely back on
form today. He led the only two drives where the offense put the ball in the end zone,
starting with his first drive of the 7 on 7. He capped a 5 play drive from the 20 and
throwing to Buster Anderson who got behind his man and Thompson threw a really
nice deep ball that got Buster in stride up the left sideline for 6.
Brendon Nosovitch and Connor Mitch didn’t fair quite as well as they spit the reps
on the following drive. Noso had the offense moving mainly on short check down
passes to the RBs and Tight ends. Mike Davis, Brandon Wilds, Jarrell Adams, and
Drew Owens were the targets as Noso drove the team to near the 30, but the defense
held at that point and stopped the offense on 4th down. From there, Connor Mitch got
the final set of reps of that drive, moving the offense to inside the 10 on three
completions, but he got a little greedy and tried to fire a strike in tight coverage
to Shaq Roland, and Jimmy Legree read the play, and stepped in front of Roland
for a clean pick near the goal line.

During the full team drills, the offense started again at the 20 with Dylan Running
the offense first. He had a couple of off target throws, but was able to lead the
team past midfield before he gave up the offense to Nosovitch. He was only mildly
effective moving the offense a short distance before the defense held again. Shamire
got a couple of catches on that drive, as did Buster Anderson and Charlton Heard,
and Tevin Bradshaw. Once the offense was stopped, they spotted the ball at the 30
and allowed Dylan to try to get the offense moving. A couple of nice runs by Davis
and Wilds got the ball inside the 10, and Dylan finished the drive by hitting Jarrell
Adams on a nice skinny post route in the back of the end zone.

They spotted the ball at the far 20 and Dylan moved the ball back to about the opposite
40, before the coaches put Nosovitch back under center. The offense moved pretty well
until they reached the 20 yard area. Noso telegraphed an out route intended for Jeffery
and this time, Jordan Diggs read the play and stepped in front of Jeffery for the pick.
That interception made 3 for Diggs this season, and I think it was also 3 for Legree.
The coaches took the ball to midfield and allowed Thompson to end the practice with one
final drive. There were a couple of really nice plays on this short drive from the Running
backs. Mike Davis broke a Read Option handoff up the middle for a long run, and on
the next play, Thompson ran a straight option to the right, pitching the ball to Brandon
Wilds and Wilds ended up running the ball down inside the 10. However, a couple of
plays after that, Thompson was force to run with the ball, and as he reached the line
of scrimmage, he tried to push the ball out to Shamire Jeffery in the middle of the
field (ala Brett Favre), but Kelvin Rainey made a nice break on the slow shovel
pass, and picked it off to end the practice. . That makes 7 picks this spring for Kelvin
from the MLB position !
  • Good practice today for Dylan Thompson. Did an excellent job moving the offense
during the game drills. Some nice work running the zone read offense as well as a few
nicely thrown passes.
  • Noso looked better today, but still a little uneasy running the full offense and I noticed
he didn’t seem to want to throw the ball deep when there was some guys open. Maybe
a little gun shy, or maybe just didn’t want to step out of what he felt comfortable doing
but he wasn’t throwing way high like he was last week.
  • Only limited reps today for Connor Mitch. Not sure if the coaches were frustrated with his
play today, or may be that they’ve made the decision to give Noso increased reps and
start considering the possibility of red shirting Connor this year. Either way, Mitch should
get a lot of work during the Garnet and Black game this week, to prepare him for the
summer voluntary workouts.
  • Mike Davis continues to run like a demon with his hair on fire ! . Very impressive
finish to a good spring for Mike. Good Mixture of power and quicks.
Also some nice work turned in by Wilds in the backfield. I really think this team has
ability to control the game with their running ability a lot better than we have the
past couple of seasons. If so, we can get the air attack cranked up to full potential
behind a strong ground game and play action. This should make both Shaw and
Thompson more effective in the passing game.

Next practice is Thrusday… That will be the final practice before the Spring Game.

I think so too. Good quick reactions to passes, and is starting to play
the run a lot better too. ... I also noticed on one of Noso's read option
plays, he was over talking to Marquise Roberts, and was showing him
how to slide step, and he motioned to him, like "when you see him
pull the ball out, TAKE OFF" (pointed to the backfield).

Rainey is having a very good Spring

Didn't see anything. His last run was the one he broke up the middle
on that last drive, and he looked in good shape there. There were
only a handful of plays after that before they called it a day.

Take this constructively guys and don't bash me as it is merely a question...

Could it be raineys background in our offense that is making him look so good this off-season? It just seems like he should know the plays and TE routes as well as the check downs. That would make it a little bit easier to jump some routes imo.

Not saying he isn't putting in a great spring and I haven't been there to watch, so Idk how he looks, just wondering if maybe the 7 picks is a slightly inflated number due to his knowledge of our offensive schemes. Spurt?

This has already been discussed at length repeatedly and the general consensus (which spurt has agreed to already) is that yes, obviously his knowledge of the offense has somewhat inflated his numbers.

O okay, I don't get time to read through all of the practice threads and basically just read the first post, so I missed it. I think long term, that experience will help him recognize patterns against other teams as well.

His ability to figure out what an offense is running based on his knowledge of the playbook is a great asset, this will carry over to film sessions with other teams and offenses. He was highly recruited by programs such as bama as a LB, getting a chance at TE is a big reason he is a GAMECOCK from what I gave read.

Thanks you and great report Spurticus, Shaw and Thompson, Davis and Wilds are going to be exciting to watch this fall as the OL and WR continue to improve going against a great DL, while chalenging a talented Hampton, Legree, Elder, Diggs, Rainey...Competition all over the field!

Thanks for another great report! I dont get to spend much time reading all the questions/comments so I apologize if this has been asked but have there been any real team leaders either vocally or just by example? Also do you have any idea who will be the hard hitter on the D?
