It has been on top for awhile. But, it seems that over the last year or 2, their sales have dipped. The Kinect thing from Xbox has hurt them some. Some of the tech insiders seem to think that Microsoft is very close to having a fully functional and playable virtual reality system. They have filed for several patents that seem to give credence to the rumors. That would be a huge blow to Nintendo. I couldn't care less, since I've only played one or two video games in the last 10 year's or so. But, some good virtual reality games might bring me back in.

the last line nailed it...nintendo makes games/systems that appeal to a very broad spectrum...sony/microsoft tend to target (whether intentionally or not) the more "gamer" segment

I'll bet even with the large number of Wii's sold, 360's and PS3's have logged more hours of use. Honestly I've probably logged about as much time just on the two Elder Scrolls games for 360 as I have playing my Wii. I would be surprised if the Wii consumed more than 3 or 4 % of my total gaming time between the two consoles. Really even reaching 3 or 4% would surprise me. IMO Nintendo just caught up to Sony and M$ with the WiiU, and once the new consoles are released Nintendo will be back in the rear view mirror again.

Nintendo marches to their own beat. Sony ans MS have them beat technically. But somehow Nintendo keeps holding their own. Their focus is more on the casual gamer but they have found a niche that works for them.

The N64 was revolutionary and I still sometimes play Goldeneye on it That game was just incredible for it's time.
