Default Spring Game Impressions

Finally got to watch the entire game last night before bed. Some things that stood out to me:

1) Chaz Elder not only is a well put together Safety, but he is going to be the next NFL talent in the secondary. A lot of people, including myself, are worried about the FS spot with TJ Gurley out but I think Chaz Elder is going to ease our concern there this year. In fact, if Gurley can't get back to 100%, I don't see a reason why the coaches shouldn't consider redshirting him. But I thought Chaz really stood out in a game that favored the offense most of the afternoon. He does a good job of tracking the football and he showed he has some return skills. He just looked smooth out there. Probably should've had the pick where Jesse Dukes got underneath him but other than that, I thought he was the most impressive player on defense. Really excited about the former 4 star.

2) Kendric Salley still seems a bit hesitant to me. Not sure if it was the knee or because he wasn't finding the creases but he seemed off to me. I expected him to be more downhill rather than east/west. He also reportedly had some issues with putting the ball on the ground during the Spring. He was one guy I was looking forward to seeing the most after the reports of his play during the bowl practices. It'll be interesting to see where he fits on the depth chart when/if Shon Carson returns and David Williams/Jamari Smith get to campus. I, honestly, wouldn't be against seeing the coaching staff turn him into a hybrid RB/FB/TE.

3) Speaking of David Williams. Word to the wise, do not be surprised if he quickly shoots up the depth chart and is our 3rd down back this season. Possibly even eating into the primary backup's playing time. I've been telling folks for a while that this guy is BIG TIME and Spurrier has been quick to mention him as a guy that is going to help this year. He mentioned Williams by name again this weekend. Williams is the kind of guy that could give us what we haven't had in a while and that is a home run threat in the backfield. Really excited to see this guy in the Fall.

4) I thought all of the quarterbacks had a good day at the office. All of them looked at their best off of playaction. Obviously, praise needs to be held to a happy medium because the defense was restricted but I thought our young gun slingers threw the ball well. Dylan, outside of one throw, was his typical self. Something that really stands out to me about him is that he now looks like he is in COMPLETE control of the offense. Doesn't have that deer in the headlights or passive manner about him anymore. The dude knows he is in control when he is out there.

This is something that you don't typically see with younger QBs and that goes for Brendan Nosovitch and Connor Mitch. Nosovitch has got some tools thats for sure. He has a compact release and his arm strength looks good enough to be effective in the offense. Not a howitzer but its above average. The TD to Adams on his first drive was an NFL caliber throw. He still looks a little passive out there but it got better as the afternoon went on so maybe it was the jitters. I'm really anxious to see how he looks NEXT Spring when he is in his 3rd year. Thats the year where players usually start to transform.

Connor Mitch, for the little we saw, showed us what we were hoping to see from the highly talented freshmen. There is no question he is a dropback Quarterback, and his fundamentals are a lot better than I thought they would be for a true freshmen. I was told before the Spring that he would play the entire second half of the Spring Game but it didn't look like that happened which is fine. I expect him to see that workload increase drastically next Spring. Its going to be really interesting to see how the offense is tailored when his time comes around. He is kind of the experiment right now as the coaches are using his development as a factor in whether they recruit more drop backs in the future. I would say so far, so good.

Lastly, someone find out why Perry Orth didn't get one D1 offer. He was a little erratic but I think it was apparent that he has a chance to be better than most QBs that have been here during the Spurrier tenure.

5) Got to show some love to the Tight Ends. All three of them had their moments Saturday with Jerrell Adams stealing the show. This guy looks to be developing physically, and is becoming very comfortable in his role. Interesting that Spurrier put back in the formation where we have 3 receivers and the TE split tight to the formation. Haven't seen much of that look since Jared Cook was here.

Have to be reminded though that the Tight Ends were primary used on crossing patterns and down the seam Saturday. Expect this to be the case most of this season. I doubt you see very many complicated routes being run from these guys. Spurrier will set them up for big plays but the offense will remain WR driven.

As an aside, someone get Drew Owens the ball. Not sure if he got back into the game after his catch on the sideline but it seems like whenever I see the guy play, he makes nice grabs. Physically, he looks great but it seems the injury bug keeps following him around. Hopefully the coaches can find a way to get him on the field more this year if he is healthy.

6) Really like what I saw from Shaq Roland and Shamier Jeffery. It is absolutely frightening how similar Shamier compares to Alshon. Just his mannerisms are almost identical. The way he jogs/runs, lines up at the LOS .. its almost identical. Something he has that Alshon didn't was the quick twitch ability. Shamier showed some shake after the catch that I was expecting to see after hearing about him coming out of high school. I thought overall, other than the drop where he went to the ground, he had a really nice afternoon. He is going to be a nice possession receiver for us.

Had to like what you saw from Shaq Roland as well. He made some nice grabs especially towards the sideline and kept his concentration (which has been an issue) on the TD play. Don't remember seeing him drop any easy ones. He is THE GUY that has to have a BIG Summer. I hope he takes the steps forward he made this Spring and builds on them. We really need this guy this year.

Extremely disappointed with Jody Fuller. Its only his 2nd year but he just looks lost right now. Not sure what is going on right there. He has the build that you dream of your slot receiver of having but his hands have been an issue and Bubba gave him a good tongue lashing after lining up improperly twice. It also seems he runs routes incorrectly so that points to issues with knowledge of the scheme. He has time to develop but 2014 (year 3) looks like it could be a crossroads year for him.

Nick Jones kept the connection with Dylan Thompson going. I think his production this year will be up and down based on who is in at QB. He should be able to hold off Kwinton Smith this year.

Speaking of which, nice to see Kwinton Smith get a couple grabs towards the end. I don't remember seeing him out there much most of the day. He is another guy that needs to have a big Summer. We need the guy to provide some depth at the B receiver. We are also in need of a big receiver.

7) Really liked the Pistol looks that USC deployed Saturday. Seems like it really helped boost the running game and the play action game was VERY good. Saw a variation of runs and activity from the offensive line. The guys just looked comfortable running it. I'm expecting it to work its way into our playbook this year; especially with the 3 receiver, 2 back look. If Spurrier can use this in place of some of his patented I-formation plays, I think you could see more 2005-2007 plays re-appear.

I agree with all of that. I honestly think Jamari Smith will be the next big thing at RB, the guy had close to 3000 rushing yards in a season in 8A florida ball. I believe it was 2800 yards. Just a thought, I'm sure they'll both see plenty of pt though. I just hope the work ethic Lattimore started will continue now that he's gone.

Me too. Quicker and more elusive. I've read where Jamari may be moved to DB.

I agree with this. Since Dylan has practiced with the second team for a couple of years, I would expect that he would already have an established chemistry with Nick and the others. They are already used to each other. I think Nick plays better when Dylan is in. I feel the same way about Damiere Byrd.

Good stuff. Elder looks long and plays tall. He seems to have a smoothness, kind of like Gilmore. Getting undercut by his own player definitely cost him his second int on the overthrown ball into the endzone.
I didn't see quite the quickness from Nosovitch I expected, but he looks really filled-out. He threw some nice balls into tight places.
Tight ends! Busta was open in seams, and we know he can run. Adams could be uncoverable short or deep. I hope he develops a "mean streak" and feels like he owns every ball. If he learns to take it away and fight through defenders, he will be a defense's nightmare. Owens got open and caught the ball well, also.
Can't wait to see Mike Davis against Georgia. I saw him at one practice and Saturday display what looks like a deeply competitive nature - kind of Swearinger on offense.
Rainey can apparently lay a good lick and position himself well. He stopped Wilds cold on the first or second play. He made one nice hit without wrapping and the guy got away, but he was around the ball a lot and just missed slapping down a pass. Gerald Dixon (44) seems to have a nose for the ball.
Hampton is a showboat.
K Smith looks tall for sure. I thought he was the 6-8 guy until I checked the list. Shamier made the kind of plays we need, catching in traffic, and going down to get tough balls.

Our offense will be productive. Defense will be as good as last year, I think the LB's will step up. Loved Nosovitch, Mitch, Elder, Adams, Shamier, Shaq. The experienced guys love of course. Mike Davis could have a breakout season. He looked outstanding. This really could be our year to win the SEC and BCS with the schedule we have.

I thought Nosovitch showed good accuracy kind of a like throwing a dart ala Phil Petty. What i remember he looked like he cuffed the ball alittle bit to get that ball spinning- very nice indeed.

Default Re: Spring Game Impressions

One of the better Spring Games I've seen in quite a while, However
It was a Spring Game. It was a scrimmage with a mixture of first and
second unit players on each side. We've seen over and over in the
past this is not a good measuring tool for the season. .... some good
individual efforts by Noso, Jarrell Adams, Shaq Roland, Chaz Elder etc... Run Blocking
looked good most of the time. No blitzing or stunting, so no indication
of how the line has progressed.

Overall for the spring: MIKE DAVIS IS A LOAD ! .... I fully expect him to
be the #1 guy this fall, and hope that the two back set is used A LOT.

Hoping that Shaq's performance from about mid spring and into the
spring game continues into the Summer. We need him to show up this fall
for this team. He still has an issue with consistency. Showed Flashes of
becoming a good solid WR the second half of the spring.

We have "questions" in the Kicking game (punting and field goal kicking).

Secondary needs to find some depth. We have work to do back there,
but with the additions of McWilliams and Martin this fall I think we can
get a solid starting group and "some" quality depth.

Linebackers are young (will make some mistakes), but they are fast
and very active. Undersized but make up for it with aggressiveness.
I think this position will be a pleasant surprise this fall.

Just can't get much of a picture from the Spring game though. If you
could, Tajh Mohammad, Mike West, Bobby Wallace, Chavez Donnings
and countless others would be NFL standouts right now.... With so many
projected Starters and players counted on to get a lot of PT, out this
spring, it's even harder to read anything into the G&B game. It's basic
plays, tuned down intensity on the Defensive Front and a lot of guys
playing that won't see much PT this fall, mixed in with the starters.

I think it was Holtz who said in a lot of cases: "Nothing is ever as bad as it
seems, and Nothing is ever as good as it seems" ... Good quote for the
Spring Game every year.

I like what Cleveland Pinckney said years ago when Holtz was here. Something like "You can tune it up, rev it up, etc., but you never know what you've got 'til you get it out on the track." They happened to have 2 good years and win the Outback twice, but he was right about when you will know.

I'm expecting it to work its way into our playbook this year; especially with the 3 receiver, 2 back look. If Spurrier can use this in place of some of his patented I-formation plays, I think you could see more 2005-2007 plays re-appear.

Tight End play was probably the part of the Spring Game I liked the most.
Haven't seen us go that heavy to the TEs even in practices, or any of
the scrimmages the past few years. If we do use the Pistol Formation a
lot, I expect the TEs to be primary targets on a lot of the called pass
plays. Hopefully we can use them more in the passing game this fall to
set up the deeper threats to Bruce, Damiere and Nick.
However, I think Buster continues to show an ability to get deeper in his
routes, and Drew is a guy who has been used on the intermediate to
deeper TE Routes in the practices. I don't think you will see only Crossing
routes or short seam routes, from these guys. If Spurrier gets the right
matchups, look for him to use Buster and/or Drew on the deep curls and
outs, or even a 15-25 yard post routes.

Just think back 2-5 years ago and compare those spring games to these now......we have so much more talent at almost every position. I can see why SOS is grinning from ear to ear.
And speaking of Adams......go down 10-15 yards, turn around, and say throw me the damn ball. He'll bring new meaning to throwing the fade for a TD......Just throw it up and he'll go get it. He has a ton of athleticism and can jump out of the gym

This team will be more offensive than defensive.

I (myself) wouldn't go that far right now, but I can tell you this. For the
past 8 years, we've seen the defense pretty much dominate Spring
Practices, and come out "stronger" than the offense in the fall.

This Spring, the offense held their own through the entire spring sessions
and there was more of a balance between the two this year. That in spite
of some outstanding defensive work at times. ... I'm pleased with all areas
of the early offense with exception of the pass blocking from our O/Line.
Get that fixed and the 2013 season is going to be F-U-N !

Mike Davis and Wilds both looked like NFL RB's. I agree that I think Davis is a little bit quicker which gives him an advantage both of these guys are studs.

QB depth/talent is better now than it's ever been.

Also really excited about the TE's. We should be going to those guys about as much as our receivers. They present a mismatch to whoever is covering them and they don't drop many balls.

Wilds and Davis are both excellent runningbacks. Both could start at a
majority of Div 1A schools in this country right now. Either could start and
do well here..... Davis however has something that is hard to put into
words. He has a "Drive" when he runs that's not in the coachable
realm. It comes from inside. The coach I had in High School described it
as "Running Angry" ! ..... He's motivated by something when he carries the
ball. I am positive it's him wanting to prove "Himself" and not the fact that
he is James Davis' Little Brother. .... Kids with motivation make great players.
I'm convinced Mike will get better with each game (starter or not). I'm
also convinced if he doesn't start the first game, he will be named the
starter early in the season. He's still learning the position as a College
level runner. He will get there soon. Right now he's running in overdrive all
the time with his foot to the floor.
