Default TV on the way out.

Anyone know anything about fixing TV's? I gotta a 50"plasma and its starting to flicker to a black screen. Anyone have any idea what it could be? The tv is pushing 4 years old so i dont think its worth taking it somewhere to fix but i was considering taking it apart and look if any of the capacitors were blown. I dont know if a blown capacitor would cause this.

Any help would be thankful!

what kind of tv is it. I have a 46" samsung that I got for free from my mother inlaw because the tv would go black and the power button would just click. It was due to three bad capacitors. It was just out of their lawsuit settlement warranty time lines. I fixed it for $100 buying a new board because tv repair around here wanted to charge me $60 to luck at it and I knew what the problem was and then estimate was a $75-$150 to replace 3- $3 capacitors.

I thought this was going to be a thread about how online media is taking over, and TV as we know it is on the way out. I bought netflix stock when it was 20 bucks a share several years back when they started offering streaming only service. I sold it when it reached 100, it peaked much higher.

I'm waiting to see what the next big thing in online content shapes up to be, and then going all in. It's risky but such a fast return if you pick wisely.

Make and model would be helpful.........

Could you take a short video showing what it is doing?

Bad capacitors can cause all kind of strange stuff...... so I would definately look for bulging/vented caps......

Yeah me too. Traditional TV will be gone in 10 years except for live events such as sports, concerts and award shows like Oscars.

Everything else will be streaming with services like Netflix, Hulu, iTunes and such. I probably watch 90% of my stuff streaming anyways and don't pay for cable anymore.

Internet is going to shake up the TV business much like it has decimated music, newspapers and everything else.

The TV is a 50" plasma
http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-50PQ30-plasma-tv

It started to flicker to a black screen recently and would go back to the picture within a second or so. Then today it picked up and started flickering more and once it stayed black for like a minute then the picture came back again. The sound works fine the entire time the flickering is going on. Right now I'm actually still watching it and it seems to be flickering less but i know its a matter of time before it starts up again. The tv got popped by lightening about a year ago and the back hdmi board doesn't work and the only hdmi port that works is the one on the side of the tv. The tv is almost 4 years old so i dont wanna drop a lot of money in it but i saw some people are able to replace a capacitor or two for a few dollars and save the tv. I just didnt know if these sympotoms pointed to something as simple as a blown capacitor or something more serious like having to replace the entire board. I was hoping i could keep it chugging till black friday haha.

Now we know how old you are. Flux capacitor is what let Michael J Fox travel in time.

Look for blown caps.

Sounds like a power supply board failure. I assume turning it off and back on "resets" it for a short period of time? Does it pop or make any noise before the black screen? If so, that will lead a technician to the board. You need a scope to test the boards and a fair amount of knowledge of the circuitry. It may be worth having a good shop check into and they may have a board that they can swap out and check it. That or find a student at a local technical college to take to class and they'll find it and repair the board. Good luck but plasmas will always have these types of issues prior to going completely out for good. I'd probably investigate the cost of fixing it and what you could possibly sell it for after to put towards a good LED back lit. FWIW, that board can be ordered off the web for less than $100.

Edit: Did a google search on your model and black screen and this is common. One message board refers to the Y sustain board which is also available for less than $100 on the web.

I wish I could be of help with your tv issue, but the only thing I know about mine is that I plug it in and it works.

I've always heard that you need to be VERY CAREFUL when working on a TV because of the electrical charge stored in the capacitors (even after unplugging). You could touch the wrong thing and then discharge the cap through your body.
I would say take your tube to the repairman.

Get the TV up to 88 MPH, see what happens. If it's the flux cap, you'll know it!

If you know what to look for, you are in no danger of having a cap 'discharge through your body'. Caps on a plasma TV will be pretty low to the board. If you (generically you, not specifically SC_boy) aren't sure about electronics, just be sure to not run your hand all over the board. Your eyes will tell you a lot more than your fingers will on a circuit board.

Caps should be round cylinders with a flat top. If the top is bulging, that's a pretty good indicator that its gone bad. The other thing to look for would be any burn marks. Anywhere the green looks black/dark brown. This could indicate a short occurred and is preventing/altering correct flow of signals (current, video, audio, etc.).

Some capacitors can be replaced, very cheaply. If it's a burn near a chip - probably best to replace the whole board. Board prices will vary. Of course, chips can go bad with no visible signs. If there is no visible signs indicating either of those - I'd take my TV to a shop or just buy a new one, and delegate the malfunctioning TV to the new 'garage tv'.
