Yes, because it will be another down year for QBs and Bridgewater is probably going to be the best available. Depending on who has the 1st pick, the best QB in the draft could very well go over Clowney just based on need and the fact that the NFL is a QB league now.

The only way Clowney doesn't go #1, outside of injury, is if there is a Quarterback or Offensive Lineman need at the #1 pick.

I agree 100% with C2. Teams seem to be addressing needs more than they used to and will no longer take the best player available regardless of their own needs.

Unfortunately the economic reality of the NFL is driving the "win NOW" mentality and teams feel QB's that play immediately give them the best chance. If they let coaches draft (some do), that aren't on a hot seat, then defensive needs will more often get the pick.

QB equals points equals butts-in-seats... Defense equals championships. It's an old cliche but true in my estimation.

Clowney will go #1 hands down. NFL scouts have been drooling over him since he was in High School.
NTM, when JD goes to the NFL combine and totally blows it out of the water, teams are going to try and give up every single draft pick for the next 5 years to get this guy in their clubhouse.

Clowney will hands down be the best player. That being said, the best player doesn't always go #1 depending on a team's needs. If whoever is drafting 1st really wanted/needed a qb, it would probably be in their best interest to leverage the pick of Clowney by trading down to take a QB

Any team that wants someone other than Clowney and has the first pick will make a mint trading the pick. Clowney will go #1 overall no matter what the worst NFL team needs.

Assuming they would be the worst and have the first pick, they have great need on the DL, specifically the DE position. They would take Clowney, assuming JC has a number 1 type year.

In the 2002 draft a Mr. Julius Peppers was taken at #2 overall behind David Carr... the rest is history.

The Houston Texans were a brand new Franchise and needed everything.

This one bust won't change the rest of how NFL teams draft.

Default Re: Clowney or Bridgewater #1 overall in 2014...

A franchise DE is never going to be the main determinant of whether a team is a Super Bowl contender or not, but a franchise QB is everything. If Bridgewater is as good as most think he is, he should be the pick every time. And barring injury or some odd circumstance, the team picking number one will need a QB.

The only caveat to that is that the QB class looks loaded next year. A team may be willing to pass on Bridgewater because it can get one of Boyd, McCarron, Murray, Fales, Marriota or Manziel slightly later. But wouldn't count on it.

I know it won't change anything... my point is that if Clowney is taken #2 overall, he could have a career similar to that of Julius Peppers which would be just fine.

But I just don't think Bridgewater is that good.

If this was Andrew Luck on the other hand, yea.

If a team really needs a qb in what is expected to be a down year for the crop, it s ems that it would make sense for the top team to trade the top pick to a team that would salivate over a certain player rather overpay for a player who may be at a position of need BUT who may not be a franchise player

Pretty sure it's going to be a strong QB class, especially when you compare it to this year. Bridgewater and Boyd would've almost certainly been top 10 picks had they come out/been eligible. And then others like Murray, Fales?, McCarron probably would've contended for the top QB spot with Geno and EJ Manuel. Plus you have wildcards like Mariotta and Manziel, maybe Braxton Miller, who could rocket up draft boards with great seasons and if they kill the pre draft process. Forgot Brett Hundley at UCLA too. Some people think he could be a top 10 pick.

No way in hell an O linemen goes before Clowney. A QB is a possibility.
