Default Uhaul Question

Since I found out that a lot of people on here have moved a lot, I am about to be in the same boat and am looking for some advice. I'll be moving from Columbia to Houston and I've got my apartment to move along with my car. A 14ft Uhual should suffice for all of my apartment stuff, but my question lies in transporting my car. I feel a little uneasy about hitching my car to the truck. Has anyone had any good/bad experience with this?

I use the full trailer when I move. Have done this a few times. I like it better

Yeah - Full trailer you should be allright. Worth it over the trailer that only carries the front 2 wheels.

If you get the one where your car pulls behind, do not get your self in a situation where you have to back up.

1. When I moved to Florida, I pulled my vehicle on a 2-wheel towable behind a 24' truck. No problems whatsoever, very secure if you strap and tighten everything properly...although I will be honest, I didn't trust it at first. I mean, you are pulling a $25,000 vehicle on a $2,000 dollar piece of metal with 2 tires.

2. Do not use Uhaul. In contrast to their competition, they have some of the oldest and unmaintained fleet in their industry. If you want to go cheap, use Budget at least. Penske has the best equipment and let me tell you, if you think saving $100 is what you are after...wait until you break down in the middle of nowhere with your whole life in a box.

I used Budget to move a large load of items from SC to Florida, and I have no complaints about the truck or deaing with Budget at all.

Ok so I am going to shun Uhual and look at renting a Budget truck. I'm not too worried about cost, because I will be getting at least $1,500 to help with the move.

While I have had no problems with U-haul in my cross-town moves, I will agree that U-Haul's trucks are absolute crap. I took a 20' truck on the interstate a couple months ago, and I thought it was going to fall apart, even at around 50mph. It had 150,000+ miles and was in horrible shape. Very scary. The way the tires looked, I'm surprised they didn't disintegrate.

We actually had to switch trucks when picking it up because the first one wouldn't even start in the parking lot.

Have a friend drive it and then buy them a 1-way plane tix home. Safer and cheaper.

I used uhaul once with a small truck and two wheel dolly. had no problems at all except backing into our house and bending the gutters. Last budget truck i used something was wrong with the blend door on the ac and the heat ran constantly and you couldnt turn it off full blast. drove from greenville to myrtle beach with the windows down at night and it was luckily pretty cold out. windshied wipers were crap and couldn't see a thing in the rain. it just smeared every thing. Also the truck had abs problems. Penske is no doubt the way to go. equipment is top notch and trucks are mostly new. I used their 26ft turbo diesel with a manual tranny. Best moving truck I've ever used. Had a lift gate and it had plenty of power and the air ride seats were super comfortable. I've moved from greenville to columbia, columbia to jacksonville fl, jax to greenville, greenville to myrtle beach, myrtle beach to concord nc. so yea I've moved quite a lot and used plenty of moving trucks

I haven't used UHAUL in the last three moves. The last time I did, had a truck reserved a month in advance, showed up the day prior, and that had rented in out from under me. For local moves, Budget will suffice but their stuff isn't much better than UHAUL. Penske is by far the best, aside from hiring professional movers, and you can find them at some Home Depots now. Like others said above, the full length car mover is a much better and safer option and less wear and tear on your car.

If you have time, drive your car out to houston then catch a flight or greyhound back to south C to move the rest of your stuff. Or do that process in reverse.
