Default Your "Story" surrounding the Hiring of Steve Spurrier

Looking back (almost) 9 years ago, we were getting ready to start the
2004 football season (Lou Holtz last year). I'm sure we've all heard or
were involved in some of the stories/rumors that started circulating mid
season, that Steve Spurrier was considering taking the job here at the
end of the season. Just wondering if anyone had any interesting stories
that touched them while the rumors got more and more heavy as the
season went along. .... I had one that was pretty interesting myself:

I had lived in Columbia less than 2 years at that time, and a coworker
of mine who was from Hazard Kentucky, and a HUGE UK Wildcat fan, told
me in February while we were out playing golf, that there was something
going on at the Athletic office I might be interested in (this was before
the Spring practice of 2004 began). When I asked him what he'd heard, he
told me his sister worked in the USC admin office, and that twice that
week, Mike McGee, Dan Reeves and Lou Holtz had gone into McGee's
office, for long meetings, and that Steve Spurrier was in the group as well.
He said his sister told him, that after the second meeting (a long one)
that week, McGee had addressed several members of the admin staff,
and told them, that if reporters happen to ask them questions about why
Steve Spurrier was in town, to tell them it was to set up a Charity Golf
Tourney. ... He then told me, that the rumor that was going around the
admin office, was that Lou Holtz had approached McGee after the 2003
season, and asked him for one more year to get things back on track,
and that he would step down after the 2004 season, and that he was
positive he could get Steve Spurrier to agree to come to USC and coach.
He told me that his sis said, that Holtz told some people that Spurrier was
dying to get back into College Football in the SEC Somewhere and would
like to go to a team like UK, USC, Miss St .... to build something special
there (places where they had no major championships). Holtz told Spurrier
that he was in his final year or so at S Carolina, and that would be a
great place to build something from basically nothing. He said Holtz told
some people in the AD, that Spurrier was very interested in the job if
it was available.

I laughed and told my Buddy Mark, that I WISHED that were true, but if
Spurrier was indeed on Campus with Holtz, the Golf thing was probably
accurate, because there was no way this school would pay the kind of
bucks it would take to get Steve Spurrier here. Mark said, I'm just telling
you what was told to me, and since I'm a wildcat fan, I don't really care
one way or other, but I hope it isn't true either.
Didn't hear anymore from him until we dropped the game that year to
Ole Miss, and rumors started popping up everywhere that Spurrier had
been seen in the area shopping around for real estate deals. I went to
Mark, and asked him about what he'd heard, and he told me that Spurrier
had been in McGee's office on several other occasions before the season
started, and he had just gone back in with Dan Reeves Present along
with Andrew Sorensen. ... I still wasn't buying the idea that Spurrier would
be the next coach here, but with the local media rumors, and what Mark
had told me back in Feb., I was getting curious to say the least. .. That's
when I got involved with Internet message boards for the first time, when
a guy at work told me about them, and suggested a few to try, just to
see what rumors were being told with the fanbase. He said to take most
of it with a grain of salt, because a lot of it was BS, but you could find
some interesting facts out on them as well.
I joined GamecockSportscenter, and there was a guy who helped out with
the board named Roger Coggins, who had some inside connections, and
he became one of the first people I posted regularly with.

About 4 weeks prior to the end of the season, ESPN had reported that
Spurrier had enquired as to the availability of the Florida Job, as Zook had
been canned the week prior. I went to my Buddy Mark that day, and
said "See I Told You... No way Spurrier takes this job here" ... He looked
at me and said, "Don't believe everything you hear, becuase I was told
yesterday, that Spurrier's contract is almost a done deal here at USC"
I told him, he would be back on the Gator Sidelines next year if he goes
anywhere. ....... THEN, two days later, ESPN said that Spurrier had
withdrawn his name from the UF job list, and that he wanted to look at
some other opportunities. That morning, I was affraid to run into Mark
for fear of what he'd tell me, but instead, he came to my office and pulled
me aside.. Told me this:
Said his mom was good friends with Patrick Ramsey mom (something about
attending the same HS) and that they stayed in touch with each other
over the years. Mark said he was on the phone the night before with his
mom, and told me his mom had talked to Mrs Ramsey a couple of days
prior. Ramsey was the QB in Washington when Spurrier was there, and
the two of them had become good friends off the field, and Mark said that
Mrs Ramsey had spoke to Patrick earlier that day trying to get in touch
with Steve for something. Mark said his Mother told him that Patrick and
Steve had the same agent, and when Patrick called his agent to get in
touch with Steve, the agent told Patrick that Steve was in Columbia
SC for a little while, and that Lou Holtz was going to announce his
retirement the day after the football season was over, and that Steve
was going to announce that he was goint to take over as the next
coach there.

I went to the Computer and got in touch with Roger on GCSportscenter
and asked him if he could find out who Steve Spurrier's agent was. He
sent me a PM back within minutes and said that it was a guy named
Jimmy Sexton. I then asked him if he could tell me who Patrick Ramsey's
agent was, and within minutes he replied with "Jimmy Sexton" as well !!

I told him what I had just heard, and that I was still skeptical of this
Spurrier to SC thing, but My bud was really putting out some details that
have been pretty spot on. I wasn't going to believe it until I found out
if Ramsey and Spurrier had the same agent, but when Roger told me they
did, I started to believe it just might happen. .... Then the week prior
to the end of the season, is when Steve Spurrier's brother spilled the
beans to the local newspaper in St Mary's Tenn, that his brother had in
fact agreed to coach at USC begining next season. .. And the rest is
History

I had a friend that was a grad assistant at that time. He called and told us that Holtz had just had a meeting with the team and told them that Spurrier was going to take over for him. It was before it came out in the public. For some reason, I want to say it was right after the Tenn game. The guy was super excited, as was the team. I was too, after the call.

Completely suprised here in Texas, no rumors at all. The only news was about the fight at Clemson, and I remember being disappointed about not going to bowl ( I was hoping for Independence in Shreveport so I could go). Couldn't stand Spurrier at the time. Needless to say, that has changed.

Coworkers cousin was either on the team or being recruited by Lou at the time, he (the coworker) and I are both the biggest gamecock fans in the office and he told me his cousin told him that it had been announced internally that Steve would be taking over, one of those thing where I wasn't sure if he was pulling my leg or not

I called in the 560am after game show for the first time to spill my frustration out. This was after we choked against Tenn. I told the show the we needed to get rid of Lou cause he had taken us as far as we could go...and that we were going after SOS while he was hanging out. They laughed at me on the air and said SOS would never come to Columbia......LOL boy am I the one laughing now!

I even called him out on the air after we got him! PRICELESS

You were like a double agent trying to figure out if he was going to coach here or not lol.
I really wish I could find the video of Spurrier when he accepted the job back in 2004, but I cannot find it anywhere, not Youtube or Google or any search engine.

I was living in our fraternity house. I was walking down the hall and one of the guys yelled out from his room: "WE GOT ****ING SPURRIER!!!!" which created pandemonium.

I immediately cracked a celebratory beer. It was a/b to be Thanksgiving break, anyways.

I remember talking with my brother in July 20003. By that time I way over Lou Holtz. I told him that Spurrier would find this job attractive. Reasoning to him that he dominated the league for 12 years, what would be better than going back and dominating again except this time with The Gamecocks. It just seemed to me that a guy like him would relish in that sort of challenge. Kind of rubbing everybody's nose in at the same time! So glad UF dissed him!
