Default Differences between HS & College football

I was surprised by the differences in the rules. How many differences do you know of?

One I can name off the top of my head is that you are allowed to break the huddle with more than 11 in HS.

Well not a rule, but one thing I can think of is I have never seen a HS Football Ref give the other team a first down, when they clearly did not have the first down.

Apparently in SC high school they aren't allowed to return kickoffs that make it to the end zone. Went to a game last year that had a kickoff go about 4 yards deep. The guy could have returned it to at least the 40, but they blew the play dead. Someone had to explain to me that they instituted that rule a couple of years ago.

To the extent of USC/Michigan game last year? I haven't seen anything that close to insane in my life. It is still beyond me how that call was made, upheld, and how he was not fired for that.

*I should have mentioned the chains being used to measure and all that, but it was basically a shot at the ref from our bowl game.

Very true...when a scrimmage kick or free kick breaks the plane of the goal line, it is dead. Btw, that is not just HS in SC but that is a national HS rule.

It had to be upheld...unfortunately

Also pass interference, there is no rule in High School about a ball having to be catchable before the pass interference call is made, unlike in college.

*Ball does have to be in the air though lol

How about using a tee for field goals?

Didn't realize it was a national rule. Why did they put that rule in?

There is also no automatic first down for defensive pass interference

well it is a little bit of a different situation since there aren't a ton of televised high school games, but I have seen refs measure a spot where the ball is short and then just pick up the ball and move it forward and "re-spot" the ball at a place where it is a first down. also there are just a ton of horrible spots to begin with.

There are a lot of differences.

-Hash marks are further apart
-Goal posts are wider
-There is no "tackle box", so intentional grounding can happen anywhere on the field
-No horse-collar is called if another player assists in the tackle
-A recovered muffed kick can't be advanced
-Fair catch kicks are allowed like the NFL
-Blocked kicks can't be advanced

That's just off the top of my head. There are quite a bit more.

Overtime starts from the 10 yard line, not the 25

That rule goes into effect this year. In the past, defensive pass interference was a 15 yard penalty and an automatic first down. If there was offensive pass interference, it was a loss of down and a 15 yard penalty against the offense.

The NFHS rules committe decided to make the change this year where there would not be an automatic first down for defensive pass interference and no loss of down for offensive pass interference.
