Default Radar detectors... how well do they work?

Been thinking of investing in a radar detector. Just wondering if anyone owns one and how well it works. I'm almost certain they are legal in SC. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't have one anymore, but I think most people will come on here and tell you it depends on what you get. I bought a Cobra from Radio Shack for like $150 and I thought it was a piece of junk. I took it back and got my money back.

Legal everywhere but VA & DC.
They work pretty well, but are by no means foolproof. Get Escort or Belkin if you want a good one, and remember that a detector can only serve as a warning for you to slow down (I.e. don't drive so fast that you won't be able to slow down in time).

I had one for about 3-4 years in college that I would mainly use on trips back home for the weekend. Never got a ticket and it was a really good model at the time...I paid about $350 for it.

I gave it away to a family member and now, I just don't speed at all. It really saves you zero time in the big scheme of things unless you are traveling on a long 4+ hour trip...which most people only do a couple of times a year at most.

On a daily basis in a populated town/city...you won't get anywhere faster. The red lights, stop signs, and natural progression of traffic will even things out.

I have had four:

Cobra XRS 9445 - POS - $80
Whistler Pro 78SE - Decent - $140
Beltronics RX65 - Very good - $200

Beltronics Pro 300 - My current radar detector and it's awesome. - $300

Overall the best detectors on the market IMO, in no particular order:

Beltronics RX65
Beltronics Pro 300
Beltronics Pro 500
Escort 8500 X50
Escort 9500ix
Escort Redline
Valentine One

Beltronics STI-R Plus - This bad boy is the best of the best, costs about $900

Beltronics and Valentine are definitely the best ones, but Beltronics is the best of the two. If you're gonna invest in one, do it right and get one of those.

Thanks for the info guys. Do they typically detect all cops in general or just the ones who are kind of just set up looking to catch speeders?

Not if you get one of the expensive ones where you can cancel out false alarms.

It depends on your area, but highway patrol are the main ones you have to watch out for.

I had one about 12 years ago. I was driving over a hill on Hwy 17A (speeding of course) and felt confident because I had my detector on, well as soon as I got to the top of the hill, my detector started going crazy. Low and behold there was a cop sitting in the median. Boom, ticket (70 in a 55). I got so mad after the cop left I smashed the detector on the pavement and left it there. I never owned one since.

Yup, I travel to SC extensively and know that on I-95 the police like to hang out between exits 28 to the SC/GA border.

I'll preface my two cents by saying everyone's experience if going to be different depending on how you drive.

I've had really good experiences with the Passport Escort 8500 (its an older model). I had it for about 8 years with multiple bright colored sports cars and never rec'd a speeding ticket.

You still gotta drive smart though, dont speed if you are about to come over a hill, around a bend or drive under an overpass with an on ramp to the interstate. Some cops will purposely keep their detectors off until they have line of sight and turn it on... detector will not help in that case if you are speeding when they turn it on.

I still drive a brightly colored sports car but without a radar detector, bc I live in northern Va now. I wont go over 5 around town and over 8 on the interstate... works like a charm.

Good luck, let us know what you decide to get.

I honestly don't understand the reasoning behind buying these things. To me, it seems like this is no different than wearing huge clothing to the supermarket so you can get away with shoplifting.

Just download WAZE. It works great unless your traveling late at night and there are not many drivers on line. I typically get warnings a few miles before the cop. It would be a great augment to a radar detector. It is based on other drivers reporting where the cop is and you can visually see the cop on the map on your phone.
