Default Clemson's Darius Robinson....

Adds his name to the O'Bannon lawsuit against The NCAA college Football game.

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoot...t-against-ncaa

Quote:
This is definitely something that I would love to get involved in," Robinson told Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples, "because I really do believe in it."

Robinson has started six games each of the past two seasons for the Tigers and told SI he had zero doubt the Clemson cornerback labeled "No. 21" in the EA Sports NCAA Football video game franchise represented himself.

"That's me all the way," he said. "It's as close as it gets. Size, ratings. I don't have the best hands as a corner, so I always drop interceptions on the video game
Thoughts?

Clemson players don't need more money. He shouldn't join the suit.

I love how all the bench warmers are the ones joining these things. He knows he's never going to get paid playing football, so this is a little easy money for him to do nothing.

Bill Russell and Oscar Robertson are also in the lawsuit.

Yup. If I were a college player I really wouldn't give a $hit, I'd just be happy to see myself in a video game like the other 95% of football players.

Apparently, someone is suing EA Sports due to their "likeness" on the game and they're not getting paid. Now you have clowns like Robinson jumping on the "yeah that looks like me" bandwagon to try and get some money out of this lawsuit.

I don't get it. The players that joined the suit are nobodies. Do Oscar and Bill Russell have a beef? Of course they do. Idiot players like the 6 that joined are just riding the coat tails of those who actually have an argument for getting paid for their image. I understand people who have a recognizable image and contribution to a sport wanting to get paid for that.

Let's be honest here. I wouldn't recognize Darius Robinson in real life or in a video game. I doubt he could find himself either.

the nobodies are the ones that need to get in on the suit. they are the ones that will not make the millions later. i liken it to the nfl players from the 50s that are trying to medical care now. help them take care of themselves in the future. however how many are going to not blow the money

I see what you're saying. However, I liken the comparison to a baseball card. If you're a big name player, your card is worth more. If you're a bench warmer who nobody knows, your card is worth .02. Guys joining this suit are worth 2 cents. Who is going to pay them money when they have so little value?

Just take the no name guys out. Nobody recognizes them anyways. How can you really prove that the image in the game is really them? Sure you got jersey number but does EA use players' names on the back? If not, then you'd have a tough time proving that the image in the video game is actually them.

but with the sports card there is a players union already representing them making them money. not so with college

Yes, but college players aren't professional. So now we're back to whether college athletes should be allowed to make money.

I wasn't trying to debate that issue necessarily. Just saying that maybe their images aren't worth getting paid since no one knows who they are.

Not sure how EA Sports does it now. Without the name on the back of jerseys I'm not sure players could prove it's their image. That might be tough. Granted, I'm not a lawyer or copyright expert on player images.

How on Earth can any of you say something negative about Robinson or any player joining the lawsuit?

Putting all of your allegiance towards a video game you love is making you blind that a company is MAKING MILLIONS from these guys and their likeness. It is wrong, and there is no 2 ways about it. People buy these games because they want to see Jadeveon Clowney...and they want to actually SEE HIM AND HIS LIKENESS in the game. Same goes for him and highly recruited players who sit the bench for a year or two- who cares about playing time?

If they released the game and Clowney was a white 5'10 with a gut...and they did this to all of the players...would you still buy it? Maybe. Would everyone? No way.

This isn't about whether an athlete plays enough to be included in the suit. It's about a company who is using college athletes to make millions when they can do nothing about it and are locked within their own NCAA rules.

Doesn't matter if its a bench warmer or a star- the FACT is the appeal of the game is its perceived realism, which includes FULL rosters. Those rosters are intended to e as close to the real likeness of all players as the makers of the game can get.

This is a serious question. But in your scenario, isn't that the definition of ALL CORPORATIONS?!

They have lots of employees, all who have to work together, in order to make millions. We get salaries. College athletes get an education - many of which are valued at more than an entry level job.

Many may say athletes don't have another option. They are courted, treated well, get an education, and have a choice of "employers" (aka schools) that they can choose. Not much different than each of us when getting a job.

What other people don't take into account are the millions of dollars spent on them for the facilities, the training they get from top coaches, and "on the job" training to prepare them for NFL careers (or an education that will help them get jobs). Not only that but they get exposure and networking opportunities many of us would never get that can help them get jobs if they never play in the NFL.

What is all of that worth? Probably a lot more than you and I get paid why our employers make millions. It's not much different. People just think cash is the only form of currency that matters.

Step back a minute. You are talking about the NCAA and the gain they get from the players, since players are offered a free education.

I am talking about EA (Electronic Arts) and the GAME they make...that is the focus of this lawsuit. They are using the likeness of these players...and profiting from it.

EA doesn't have the right to make millions off of these players because they are getting a free education. The NCAA may have an argument, but no one else.

I can't create and market a cereal called Clowney Crush and feature a tall black cartoon character with dreadlocks on the front.

Also, you still can't make the comparison that our job is equal to their school and our pay is equal to their scholarship.

If you were a songwriter and every single song you wrote...sold for $100 because you just started out. However, every song you wrote has become a Top 10 hit in America. Millions are made from the lablels, artists, marketing companies, concert venues, etc etc. Are you still going to continue to make songs for $100? No. You are worth more than that. College athletes don't have that choice...so it is different.

Fair point about EA. However, it's still an NCAA issue because they gave them permission right? If EA had done this without the NCAA (like what will happen when the contract ends), then you have a different issue.

But what happens if individual schools negotiate with EA to use logos, images, etc? I can't sell something using my employers' name because they own that. Ditto for any players trying to do the same.

What if my company tries to use my image, comment, etc for branding or advertising? What rights do I have? For most of us, it's all within HR as to what those rules are. When athletes sign LOIs, do they have something in there stating that their brand or image may be used by the NCAA or school? They must because they do it right? I just don't see the difference just because we are talking EA Sports. The money comes from the logo and names on the jerseys, helmets, stadiums, etc not the actual images of the players.

That's no different than if my company uses my image in a commercial.
