Default Alaska?

Anybody ever been to Alaska? My brother and I are thinking about going next summer to do some hiking, anybody ever gone into the backcountry? I know about the risks, we are already planning for those, mainly bears are our concern, but we want to hike around and see some sights up there before we get to far into our careers it isn't possible anymore.

My girlfriend's father and other family members are on an Alaskan cruise right now.

I had the opportunity to go (flight and trip paid for), but didn't want to take the time off and spend the extra cash on the ship bars and excursions while trying to buy a house.

Alaska is incredible...pictures don't do it justice.
Unfortunately, I've never been in the back country, just Anchorage and a drive down to Seward and back to Anchorage. But even then there's a lot of really good hiking you can find on that drive (Exit Glacier is really cool) as well as right outside of Anchorage.

Go. I've never been, but I regret not doing things like that when I was able to. Me and my buddies would always say that we were going to visit Alaska or Europe or something like that once we got out of college. 20 years later and we all have kids and bills. Do it. The chance may never come back around.

I've always thought it was cool that you can only reach Juneau by sea or air.

Not very practical for a state capital, but it is still cool.

I'd like to visit in the summer sometime.

Thanks for the reply's. I really hope to get up there. We aren't looking to go to the major cities, we want to get into the back country for a week or more. Thinking about hiking out to the Magic Bus just see it, and maybe some hiking around Denali, not to the top because thats a month or better trip. I figure I'm 28 now, not married, and have summers off since I teach, so why not spend some time doing something I want to do before it's to late.

Yes, my wife is from there. I have been 6 times, #7 is next summer. I highly suggest you do whatever is needed to make the trip. you will not be disappointed (unless you end up as a bear turd or landed on by a whale while kayaking). I know more about southeast alaska than the large part. Adro is a Tlingit native from Sitka. What kind of questions do you have? Cruises are nice but do not allow for extended excursions in one area. The problem with going to one area without knowing someone there is that you will probably miss a ton of stuff. Do you fish? Forget trying to hunt, way to frikkin expensive. You wanting to hike? Sea kayak? Whale Watch? Are you into seeing native alaskan culture? I try to go fishing while i am up there, you cannot beat fresh caught king salmon on the grill. They drink a lot up there. it is not a cheap place to visit.

Never been there, but that is a state I've always wanted to visit. My
wife and I have both talked about going out there as soon after retirement
as possible, and spend a couple of weeks or more. Hopefully the good Lord
will allow me to live long enough to see that happen

Thanks for the reply. We are looking to head into the back country hiking and camping. Have been looking at the Stampede Trail, and other areas around there. Fishing is going to happen, maybe some kayaking. Mainly, we want to get away for a week or more into the wilderness, away from technology, cell phones, cars, and the rush of the world.

Definitely hike through Denali Nat Park. Check out the town of Talkeetna.
We took a flight-seeing tour of Denali (Mt. McKinley) and it was awesome. We also visited Anchorage, Fairbanks, Seward and Hope. If you're wanting to do the glacier thing or whitewater rafting, I can give some suggestions. I'll try to post some pics when I get home today.

Rafting might be good. Climbing Denali is on my bucket list, along with Mount Everest, but that is a lot of money to climb two mountains right there.

first order of business, figure out what you want to catch and when is it in season, that will tell you when you will be going. use dates typical to the height of the fishing season for what you are after, the weather is very unpredictable on the outside of those windows.

We would be going in June or July, I have late May to Early August off every year, and he is going to take vacation whenever.
