Default COCKYTALK FALL PRACTICE REPORT: 8/3/13 (Practice Number 2)

Fall Pactice Report 8/3/13

It was kind of a difficult practice to follow and to report to you guys due to the way coach Spurrier split
the drills up. Last night during the skels, he ran two complete units on the near field (where the fans
line up to watch practice) and had one group on the far (south) end and the other on the north end
near the gate. That made it hard to follow during the 7 on 7 drills. Tonight however, he split the team into
two groups again, but this time had one unit on the near field, and the other over on the West field and
ran both 7 on 7 AND 11 on 11 with this arrangement. From my vantage point, I could not see anything
on the far field because the plays were starting from right behind the camera stand between the West
and East fields. All I could see was glimpses of who caught passes or made long runs as they ran past the
camera tower. I’ll try to get you up to speed on what I did see though. Connor Shaw and Brendon
Nosovitch were on the near field all night, and Dylan Thompson, Connor Mitch and Perry Orth ran the
drills on the west field. Shaq Roland and Jarrell Adams were both back at practice tonight and both
had pretty good showings for their first night of drills.

QUARTERBACKS:
All of the one on ones were run on the near field and both Shaw and Thompson came out smoking today
throwing the football. Connor (Shaw) hit his first 5 or 6 passes, most of them mid range to deeper routes.
Same for Thompson, although a couple of passes he threw were dropped by the receivers. Connor Mitch
had a good round of drills during the 1 on 1s, but cooled off some in the later game situation drills today.
Brendon Nosovitch had a “not so good” day. Noso for the most part was off target / out of sink throwing
the football pretty much the entire night. He had one ball picked off, and about three others that were
close to being picked. Shaw was also picked off twice tonight. Once during the one on ones, and the
other on his second snap from the 11 on 11. … Got to give Connor some slack on that one though. On
the first snap from the 11 on 11, Jadeveon Clowney blew by Cory Robinson and was standing in Shaw’s
face before he could get back a few steps. On the second rep, he did pretty much the same thing and
raised his hand in front of Shaw’s face as he was throwing the ball and it resulted in the pick. It was
better for Shaw to be picked like that in practice though, because Clowney was basically holding up
and had it been a game, he would have ended up DRILLING Shaw on both those first two snaps. I can’t
tell you what Dylan or Connor Mitch did the rest of the evening past the 1 on 1s. Impossible to see them
from where I was standing.

RUNNING BACKS:
Mike Davis and Brandon Wilds both continue to be the class of the group. Shon Carson was back and
forth between the two sqads but he looked good in what few rep I saw of him. Didn’t get to see much of
The other guys. (David Williams, Kendrick Salley etc… ) they worked with the squad
That was run by Thompson and Mitch. Shon made some really nice catches during the 1 on 1s and skels
showing some nice moves after catching the football. Right now, I would rate the depth chart as Davis
with a very slight nod at one, over Wilds as the two. Carson (IMO) is more of a RB best suited for
screens, wheel routes or tunnel screens to get him in the open field. Something we’ve been doing a lot in
practice the last two nights with him. With the little work being given David Williams during the game
situation drills, I’m pretty sure he’ll Redshirt this season along with Jamari Smith. Starting to hear Mike
talk it up a lot during the drills. He and Connor hooked up during the skels tonight on a beautiful throw
and catch for a 25 yard TD. Mike made a really nice move to leave freeze Kaiwan Lewis in his tracks,
then broke upfield. Connor dropped a nice touch over Mike’s shoulder for the TD. Davis turned around
and showed Lewis the ball and did this little “ha ha” thing at him.

WIDE RECIEVERS / TIGHT ENDS:
As I said earlier, Shaq made it back to the practice field and during the 1 on 1s, I saw him catch one pass
that was thrown low to the ground, and Roland was able to slide to ground and take it off the top of the
grass for a nice reception. On the last play of the one on ones, he made a nice spin to adjust to a badly
thrown pass by Noso near the sideline. He caught the ball and had to drag his toe to try to keep it in.
This was on the far end of the field, and I couldn’t tell if he got the toe down or not, but it was such a nice
adjustment and catch that I’d give him the benefit of the doubt and call it a catch. After that, he went to the
far field with Thompson and Mitch, and I only saw him catch one other ball from where I was.
Shamir Jeffery was also with the squad on the West field, but he and Shaw hooked up for a nice Post
route early in the 1 on 1s. Lost site of him after that as he was with the “other group”. Jarrell Adams had
a very good practice on his return to the team today. He and Connor Shaw hooked up for a really nice
post route during the Skels. The ball was thrown into tight coverage, but Adams was able to make a nice
adjustment with hips to shield off Jordan Diggs, the ball was thrown right on Adams hip and he took it
in stride and made a nice move up the field to get separation from Diggs after the catch and took it to the
endzone for a Touchdown. I saw him bring down about three / four passes tonight, but he also dropped
a very nicely thrown ball by Shaw, on a back corner fade that was right on the numbers. This happened
to all three of the main TEs tonight. Even though Anderson, Rainey and Adams had pretty good showings
early in the practice, they all had one drop that was right in the hands, two of which would have scored
6. Drew Owens caught a couple of passes during 1 on 1s from Perry Orth and Austin Hails, as did
Kwinton Smith and KJ Brent. These guys went over to the far field with the group run by Thompson
and Mitch, so they were not seen the rest of the night. …. Didn’t see anything tonight from Kane
Whithurst who made a big splash last night.

OFFENSIVE LINE:
Pretty much like last night. No pads, just helmets, shorts and shirts. I can only tell you that Cody
Waldrop is the starting Center, AJ Cann and Ronald Patrick are the starting unit guards, and
Shell and Robinson are the Right and Left Tackles respectively. They did switch in Na’ty Rogers
at left tackle with the first unit tonight later in the practice.

DEFENSIVE LINE:
CLOWNEY IS FAST….. CLOWNEY IS UNBLOCKABLE BY ANY OF OUR LINEMEN

LINEBACKERS:
Quiet night for this group. Not nearly as active as last night, or not nearly as dominant. The RBs and
Tight ends had the better of the match ups with them during one on ones and Skels… at least the group
that was on this side of the field. Cedrick Cooper picked off Shaw on the second rep of the 11 on 11
tonight. Kaiwan Lewis was burned by Mike Davis twice tonight. One went for the TD I mentioned
earlier, the other was a similar play were Mike got separation off a fake to catch another pass during
the Skels.

DEFENSIVE BACKS:
Still a very impressive group here. Even with splitting the team into two groups, so excellent work was
turned in by the squad on this side of the proving ground. Brison Williams got the first Pick of Shaw
during one on ones, and in on a couple of other deflections in the 11 on 11 tonight. Jimmy Legree and
Kad Marcus each had picks tonight. Vic Hampton was a BEAST out there tonight. The guy broke
up a nicely thrown pass of Noso’s during the skels that was intended for Nick Jones. He ended up falling
flat on his back doing it, and was slow to get up, but motioned for the coaches that he was OK to keep
playing. A few plays later, he broke up another pass where he ended up landing funny yet again, and
on the very next play, he broke on an out route that Noso threw, and made a beautiful one hand
interception but again, ended up falling on his back. He (again) got up slow and walked off the field,
but returned later on to finish practice.

SPECIALISTS:
The punters all looked a lot better tonight than the group did as a unit yesterday. There were some
nice work done by pretty much the entire group of punters, with maybe the exception of Max Huggins
who seemed to be well back in distance and hangtime than the rest of the guys. Andrew Komornik
who looke very inconsistent yesterday, only had one really bad punt tonight that I remember, and
had a few that ranked up there with NFL caliber kicks. Still, Patrick Fish and Tyler Hull are the two
frontrunners for the starting job. Tyler made some of the best looking kicks I’ve seen from him
including the work done this spring. He seems to have worked out that inconsistent streak he had
and is now hitting almost everything square and solid.
The FG work tonight was better, however they did not attempt any kicks from beyond the 40 yard mark.
(30 yard spot). Landon Ard still looks like the best of the group, even though Nick St Germain did
hit the majority of his kicks today. Ard has the arch that you like to see from your FG guy, while
Germain’s kicks are more low(ish) line drive types that will get blocked the majority of the time in real
speed. They put Shaq Roland back with the group that is working on fielding punts along with Pharaoh
Cooper, Vic Hampton, Damier Byrd, Shon Carson, and Bruce Ellington.

That about wraps it up tonight. Wish I had some more detail for you on the guys I couldn’t see. Hope
this is not the way the coaches plan on running practices the rest of the fall. Very difficult to follow
this way.

Hey idc if shaw throws twice as many pics as he threw last year. Cause that means yes throwin the ball. And that also means he will have more yards and probably twice as many tds!!

Woo can't wait for the season. I would be willing to bet our offense this year will be the best since SOS has been here.

Great report! I really hope Pharoh gets a look at WR this year or if he's redshirted, next year. He looked spectacular in that all star game (was it the shrine bowl?). I think we'd be missing out having him at CB and not WR.

Great report. The best positive spin I can put on the way the coaches are splitting up the squad is that doing so perhaps gives everyone more practice reps within the 2.5 hrs each night? With many younger players expected to step up and take major roles on the team this season (LBs), the more reps each can get out of practice, the better prepared they will be once the season starts. May not be good for us fans, but I guess the season rates above fall camp, right?

I am afraid our defense may put someone in their grave this year. From all accounts, our defense sounds fast, nasty, and athletic. I love it. Seems like each of the past 3-4 years, our D has just gotten better each off season

Hard to say right now. They're trying so many guys. I heard during

role and be our main guy. If not him, I'd say Vic Hampton. That'd

Yeah, they're using Lorenz as a spur right now (at least yesterday they
were) he was with the group over on the west Side tonight so not sure
if he was used again as a Spur or OLB.

I didn't see any signs of JD limping. He was taken out of practice altogether
late in the 11 on 11 because he was just unblockable. He was laughing
with coach Adams after being taken out, so if it was a limp, I'm sure it
wasn't anything serious.
I saw Rainey call for a trainer after doing stretching, and he was pointing
to the back of his right calf... I though to myself "hamstring" but he
was back out on the field when they started running drills and practiced
all night, so it wasn't serious either.

Great write-up as usual, Spurt. Thanks for taking the time to inform those of us who can't get out there. ItsIt is highly appreciated and is my personal favorite thing about CT.

Its only the second practice, but it sounds to me that we may be looking at a play-package type of depth chart at QB. The Shaw/Nosovitch and Thompson/Mitch groups seem to be split based upon their similar skill sets. It will be interesting to see how that shakes out as we roll through fall camp.

He was kind of quiet there last night, and he was over away from my
view tonight so not sure how he looked as a Corner. If he has any kind
of exceptional skills as a wide receiver, Spurrier will switch him over. My
guess is they will keep him as a DB to develop some talent and depth
there for the future.
