Default Miniature rant.

Let me start by saying, yes, this is a pretty dumb rant, and I realize most won't even care about these types of things, but I'm posting it anyway.

Recently, in Laurens, there was a ribbon cutting for a new business called Laurens Academy of Performing Arts. Well, just as I thought "performing arts" really means it's a dance studio. On their website, it says they now offer music and theater too, but if you visit their site, you'll see dance is definitely their main focus.

That got me to thinking about something else. Pretty much any time I see a "music" store, I immediately think what they really mean is guitar shop. Yes, guitars are music instruments (and very nice ones), but that doesn't make a guitar shop a music store. For example, I once went into a "music" store hoping to find some vocal music books (opera). When I entered the store, I noticed they had LOTS of guitars and the peripherals, and some "percussion" (drums only), so I knew this was probably a mistake. When I asked the guy if they had any music for bass-baritone, he said, "We have some stuff for bass guitar, but I've never heard of what you're talking about." Yes, I realize this was one person in one store, but I've had similar experiences in many other stores in the past.

I guess what I'm saying is I wish people would just be honest when it comes to their target client base. If they want to have a dance studio or guitar shop, great, but call it what it really is, because some of us don't want to waste our time.

Yeah, that can be really frustrating. It can be a pain to try and find what you need from stores that misrepresent their goods and services. My mom was a elementary school music teacher and director of a children's choir for years and she sometimes had problems with finding music for her choirs. It was tough for her because it seemed like she would find music for mainly SATB and SAB choirs. Don't know too many elementary school kids that can hit those bass notes.

The reason they do that is to get you in the store. They don't care if they inconvience you for a few minutes. Their goal is to get you in the store and then they can try to sell you something. By making a broad name they'll get more people in the store, and more opportunities.

It's crappy for the customer, but it pays the bills for them (sometimes).

What you're looking for is a niche type store.

This happens all the time- if you go to any store, but look for a specialized product, or something unique, you probably won't find it. Fact is, opera isn't exactly popular, especially in the South.

I hear the internet is pretty handy for such niches.

I think it has a lot to do with catering to a preconceived notion of the customer interests in that area. I know if a music store opened in my area, it would likely have very little to do with opera or anything in the classic genres.

The same can be seen in grocery stores. You likely won't find scrapple in your local grocery store just like you probably won't go to California and find grits or hog pudding in the grocery stores.

So yeah music stores in most small towns are likely going to be geared towards the garage band types which are comprised mainly of guitarists, bass guitarists, and drummers. Now if you were in a certain county in the north west part of SC, you would find mostly washboards, banjos, and the occasional fiddle.

I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play
