Good game for Beal as his Cotuit team wins game one 4-2 . Evan allowed 1 unearned run in his first six innings, then was lifted after a single and a walk in the 7th . One of those runners scored to tie the game so Evan got a no-decision and was charged with one earned run .

Very good job by Evan. Talentwise the Cape may well be the premier summer league.

His head has been straight, but our coaching staff was determined to pitch Holmes the last 2 years. Holmes was a senior so they pitched him more than they should have and that took times from Beal but there's a reason Beal was a 8th round pick from high school (6'4 frame, 90+ fastball & by far the best junk on the team, his breaking ball is amazing).

Or maybe Beal just wasn't as good as Holmes this season:

44 Colby Holmes 3 . 7 6 5-2 19 9 0 0/0 0 55.0 52 30 23 15 42 8 0 1 . 2 4 9 4113 4

14 Evan Beal 4 . 7 8 2-1 13 5 0 0/1 0 32.0 31 17 17 16 36 4 0 0 . 2 5 4 2200 3

Era: 3.76 for Holmes, 4.78 for Beal.
Walks 15 in 55 innings for Holmes, 16 in 32 innings for Beal.
Opp BA: .249 against Holmes, .254 against Beal.
Beal did have more K's than IP but the walks were too high.
And if they were even I'd rather have the senior out there in a big situation.
Beal's turn to step up is coming, but it was not in 2013!

Evan really showed potential this year. He just couldn't stay consistent, if he gets there he will be awesome.

You can stat all you want, but I would take Beal over Holmes any day of the week and twice on Sunday. I pitched threw school and its normal for guys with alot of "junk" or big breaking balls to allow more walks, sometimes a walk is better than say Holmes leaving numerous pitches up in the zone to be tee'd off on, don't get me wrong I saw Holmes do pretty good at times but if Beal would have been given the amount of pitching time that Holmes was given the last 2 years we would have a ace.

Beal was dominant in his start vs. Missouri, but after that he lost control of his pitches and even if he didn't give up hard hit balls, he'd walk batters and couldn't get out of his self-made jams.

Colby Holmes struggled this year compared to last, yet he had his moments where he was good. His mid week start against College of Charleston for example. He never got back to being a weekend starter and late in the season wasn't quite used. I agree that he gave up a lot of hard hit balls but Colby also didn't get up as many runs.

Beal's WHIP: 1.47
Holme's WHIP: 1.22

You can also point out that you felt like Holmes gave up more hits, but he had the lower opponent BA.

Beal was put back in the pen during the year and got lost in it. Never found his command again, and stayed in the pen. No one here is going to argue who has the better potential or the better "stuff" because that is without a doubt Beal. But last season Beal wasn't that great simply because he loss touch of his pitches.

Hopefully this fall and spring camp he can find his command and keep it. We could really use his arm out of the pen or if needed on the rubber to start. His stuff is great, with a low 90's fastball and one of the dirtiest sliders on the team. With command he could be a dominating closer or great starter.

I agree and cant wait for spring, I expect to see our main 3 starters being Montgomery, Beal & Wynkoop. But I want to see what Pankake's got, I've heard he's fast so we'll see, I think this upcoming seasons gonna be fun!

Evan has more upside than Colby, but when Beal loses control of the strike zone, he really struggled....

I think if he can throw strikes, he will be a weekend starter...

With the stuff he has, if his head was straight, he would have been a weekend starter and a go to guy. He couldn't find his control, so he we not seen as much after being given chance time and time again.

I'd love for him to pull it together and be a stud on our staff.

When he's on he is nearly unhittable. Look at the Missouri game. He had great command and velocity on his Fastball and Slider and dominated that lineup.

If he could put a season together where he never lost control of it - we'd have one of the best weekend trio in the SEC. Beal - Gumby - Wynkoop?! That would be awesome.

Joel Seddon and Evan Beal are guys that, if they get right, are unhittable and would be great.
