Default Trying to make the small senior class an issue?

One of the reporters interviewing SOS (and Ronald Patrick) yesterday asked a few questions seeming to imply that the senior class was small because of some sort of troubling attrition.

Am I missing something? The senior class is small because virtually everyone in that class redshirted, right? I glanced at the recruiting list on rivals.com, and virtually all of the 2010 recruits have either left for the NFL or are still on the team. Of the 23 rivals lists in the class,
  • 2 were JC guys who have finished their eligibility,
  • 2 left for the NFL,
  • 6 left or never enrolled (I think; the ones I'm looking at are Javon Bell, Brandon Golson, Du'Von Millsap, Cad Sanders, Corey Simmons, Tramell Williams),
  • 2 are seniors (Legree, Sutton are redshirt seniors)
  • 11 are redshirt juniors
That looks OK to me. How many of those 6 didn't ever enroll? At least Bell and Golson. Was Williams ever here? Millsap?

That sort of lazy reporting really is annoying; just trying to imply there's some sort of issue without bothering to see if there really is.

You have to look at the '09 class and compare attrition and RSs. You may find we RS'd more of the '10 class which created the gap. What's interesting is we may not RS as many new guys this year as in the past...that will create some big SR classes in a few seasons.

Sanders and Simmons enrolled for sure.

You forgot all the guys we've had to kick off for domestic abuse and failed drug tests.

Oh wait, that's not us.

We have the luxury of 45 freshmen and redshirt freshmen out of 85 scholarship players. We have had some attrition and some early exits. There will be some attrition from those classes, but we will have some larger exiting classes after next year. If we keep recruiting good talent, their will be less redshirting (except linemen) and a desire to move players on up and out at a faster pace. We are probably a little out of balance now, but being able to redshirt good talent should pay off for the next two to three years.

I'm concerned about replacing these guys...

DJ
Devonte
Jerideau
Lattimore
TJ
Senior linebackers

That is a lot of talent and experience on defense to replace. I just rewatched the UGA game, and Devonte and Lattimore (as always) were huge that game.

Devonte was a very solid player for us, a guy that didn't get a lot of attention but made some big plays. Especially against the tigers.
