Default The Gamecocks Deepest Fear

My deepest fear is not that we do not meet expectations. Expectations are suppose to be set high. You're suppose to have the will to beat goals you've never reached. That is the best part about setting goals. To put them to such heights that you have to strive for them, work for them. When you meet them, it's the greatest feeling on earth, and if you don't meet them but you know you worked your ass off - it's a humbling feeling.

The team sets goals every year to win all home games, win the east, win the SEC, and win the National Championship. The fans have similar goals.

The best part of being a Gamecock recently (in the past 2 or 3 years) is that you know - and you can say with a honest answer - that we did all we could do to be the best team we could be. Sure you can say you'd like to change a play here or a player there. Or you'd like us to not fumble here or kick a field goal there. But in the end, you were happy with the general outcome of the season. Obviously most of you know, it wasn't always like that. Sometimes our teams were suppose to be bad, but not that bad. Sometimes our teams were suppose to be good, and turn out to play like the exact opposite.

We're finally in a position now where our goals are not out of reach, and they are very possible by every meaning of the definition.

pos·si·bleˈpäsəbəl
adjective
adjective: possible
1.
able to be done; within the power or capacity of someone or something.

My biggest fear is not that we do not reach our goals, because I know and trust this coaching staff and these players to work their asses off to do what needs to be done. My biggest fear is regression. The past 3 or 4 years everyone related to the program has worked so hard to not only improve the ability and play on the field, but the image of the program. We've went from bottom of the SEC, to a team that no one marks as an automatic W on their schedules, to a team that has proven to be a premier college football team, and to a team that has been a darkhorse or frontrunner for the SEC and National Championship.

This post may seem random, but I got to think about this when I was watching inspirational movie scenes and ran across the Coach Carter scene where the player summarizes Mariane Williamson's famous quote about Deepest Fears:

Quote:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

I couldn't help but think about how true this is, especially for this program. It may be a stretch, and some may think it's dumb but I couldn't stop thinking about how true it seems to me. Our deepest fear is how great we could actually be, and how being great not only helps develop our program but every program in the University.

Either way, it's a great time to be a Gamecock.
