linebackers? i would like those who watched the game closely enough, to give a breakdown of how our lb's played as a unit, and how each individually did as the game went on. please be as detailed as possible, as this should have been a serious test for them, in their first game in the position.

The linebackers played an exceptionally good game. Skai Moore and
Marquis Roberts were both doing very good things yesterday. Thought
they played too soft on the outside, and gave up some stuff out there
that they could have done better against, but overall I think they were
the best looking unit on the entire roster. I was not pleased with the
defensive front. Maybe just playing too "Vanilla" for the first game but
thought they should have done a much better job against a smaller
and more inexperienced O/Line of UNCs. Also was not very pleased with
the way our safetys played last night. Brison Williams was giving up that
same deep underneath stuff to their Tight End all night. It was the same
route, and the same result over and over. Was extremely pleased with the
play of Vic Hampton. He's clearly the best DB we have, and God help us
if he gets hurt which almost happened last night. .... Thought UNC took
a lot of dirty shots at our guys. There was the obvious, but there were
a lot more in the trenches that weren't shown on TV.

Overall, .... decent performance. It wasn't the "come out of the gate
and DOMINATE" performance I was hoping to see, and there's a lot of
room for improvement on both sides of the ball. But the old adage being
true, that the most improvements are made from game one to game two
better be accurate. Our D/line is going to be in trouble next week if that's
not true. We got gashed way too much between the tackles by the
UNC Running back, and we are facing the best backfield in the nation
next weekend.

yeah, i really don't understand what the deal is with that other de spot. if clowney is getting all this attention, and if they are running away from clowney most of the time, why isn't chaz having a game of his life? quarles was suspended for the first half. ok. but what happened to him in the second half? lastly, i've always questioned williams giving up that same play underneath him. he did it a lot last year. brown needs to fix that, or it'll be a long night in athens.

so you weren't impressed with lewis?

Roberts has some very good speed laterally. I like the way he plays. So does Skai. Holloman and Lewis I think had pretty good games too. They move well too. What concerns me about this group is the teams that are going to run it between the tackles and with power. If we can get Cooper back for Uga that will be huge!!

Golightly at Spur seems he had a decent game. I want to rewatch it though to look at more.

I'm so-so about the game last night. We were clearly the better team,
and we weren't really in jepardy of losing control of the game at any
point, but we just weren't "improved" as much as I would like to have
seen us be, from the end of last year. ... It was much hotter and humid
than I think anyone expected, and the Hurry up that UNC ran, was taking
it's toll on them as much as us. ... When all was said and done, we basically
held them to 3 points, and 7 gifted to them by the official. Held them to
half their yardage average from last season, and we played just well
enough on offense to keep the game out of reach for them. In some ways
that was a good thing, because we'll bet better on offense as we go.

Wasn't happy with the play of the D/Line or secondary as a whole, but
I'm going on the assumption that it had more to do with UNCs game
plan, than our lack of play. .. We should improve on both squads as we
go.

I think the main thing to remember is (from and old guys standpoint). I
thought Clowney's performance was solid. 90%+ of our fans think it
was below average as well as the ESPN "Experts" from last night. ... If
you look at his stats however, he played a good game for a Defensive
End, he didn't play well from the "EXPECTATIONS" placed on him by
fans and "experts". They're pushing the panic button with him too quickly.
He'll be Clowney soon enough. I was really OK with the way he played
last night in conjunction with the UNC offensive gameplan. He had
Renner running for his life more than he wanted to, and he caused several
hurry up throws that resulted in incompletions. He had a good tackle
total night even being exhusted like the rest of the team. Not bad for
a DE in the first game. I wasn't Superman stats that everyone is
expecting out of Clowney every game.

I was EXTREMELY impressed with Darius English !! He will see a lot more
PT before this season is over. Guy has a motor that won't stop and is
"Clowney-esque" off the snap of the ball. ... We'll be OK if we use this
game as a learning tool like we usually do........I'll be very shocked if
we don't go into Athens and win against UGA. I'm confident we will
play MUCH better next week.

I agree with you on most of this. I give the DL a little bit of a pass because UNC was FAST, the conditions were tough, and they were gassed. With as quick as UNC ran plays and threw the ball, it was tough to get pressure. Yet we still did. UNC averaged under 4 wards per play last night with only 10 points. So that's impressive.

One thing I will add to this. You typically see a lot of improvement between games 1 and 2. I think the same will be true. Guys were getting their feet wet and just have to learn together through that first game. I think the defense will improve, learn from this game, and you will see them improve. Playing UGA, we will have to.

I don't know if the LBs were responsible, but the UNC TE, who was their best player outside of the UNC QB, was pretty much a non-factor. Usually, the Spur is responsible for the TE.

seriously it was a scorcher. I got home from work and went out to get the mail right before game time and almost had a stroke walking to the mailbox!!!

but seriously, pads on and playing tackle football in that heat must have been torture...

UNC spent a good bit of the offseason putting together a game plan.

We took about 2 weeks of preparation.

Still won.
