Default Question about our SEC openers.

I was just thinking about how we will be opening our SEC schedule on the road, and that made me wonder something: how often have we opened conference play on the road?

UGA is usually the first SEC game for us, so logic would dictate that every other year we open at home, but that's not the case. There have been a few times when we have opened league play with another team (Vandy seems to be the choice often), and a lot of times, that game against a team other than UGA is on the road (see last year).

Anyway, I just find it interesting that we seem to start conference play on the road. Yes, I realize half of the teams must do it every year, but it seems like we do it often.

EDIT: FYI, this is what I found on gamecocksonline.com in the archives:

2001 - SEC opener at UGA
2002 - SEC opener HOME
2003 - SEC opener at UGA
2004 - SEC opener at Vandy
2005 - SEC opener at UGA
2006 - SEC opener HOME
2007 - SEC opener at UGA
2008 - SEC opener at Vandy
2009 - SEC opener at UGA
2010 - SEC opener HOME
2011 - SEC opener at UGA
2012 - SEC opener at Vandy
2013 - SEC opener at UGA

So, as you can see, beginning in 2001, we've only had THREE seasons where we started conference play at home. How many other teams have done that or worse?

If we win that game, it's good. We get one of our 4 sec road games out of the way

Yeah, I've thought about that as well. It just seems odd there is a rotation that has us opening up conference play on the road three years in a row and then get the opener at home for one year.

And the toughest. The other 3 are back to back to back in October. Very tough month but far from impossible. I look forward to it!

Go Cocks!!!

You know what's also interesting? USC hasn't opened a season against a weaker FCS opponent in 26 seasons. Not since the 1987 season, when we actually started that season versus TWO FCS (then Div. 1-AA) opponents: Appalachian State (won 24-3) and Western Carolina (won 31-6). I doubt there are many other SEC or ACC teams that can claim that.

We do of course play FCS opponents, but usually have scheduled them strategically within our slate of tougher opponents to give the team a breather of sorts...

I think SEC does play favoritism to certain teams. I think USC and some others do get the shafted schedules. Think of the 6 traditional powerhouses of the conference and they get convenient schedules. This is a fact, and it's something USC has to overcome.

Maybe we are purposely scheduling it that way. Georgia usually seems to have a big game before ours.

nah lsu has been just as shafted as us when it comes to scheduling.

bama and uga have been the biggest beneficiaries ...and look at how that's worked out?? that's why this is the year of the gamecock...finally have a decent schedule. Get by UGA on the road and let the rest fall into place.

I agree with this. I noticed that Clemson had a better schedule than other teams in the ACC as well. It seems that the divisions pick who they feel can win and try to give them alittle extra help with their schedules.
