Default Alma Mater Etiquette Question

I am not a Carolina alum, and I had been told many years ago, that at the end of the Alma Mater, when the hand is raised at "Forever to Thee", that was a gesture reserved for alumni only. I have always removed my hat, and stood respectfully while it is played. Now I see just about everyone raising their hands at the end, some of which, I wonder if they even finished middle school, let alone graduated from college. What is proper etiquette?

As an alumnus/snob, I think it should be reserved for alumni and current students.

EDIT: Real USC, that is. I don't toast to USC-Sumter, put your hand down during my alma mater

Never heard that. I, along with all the gamecock fans I know (most of whom are not USC Alum) have raised our hands at the end of the alma mater. If it were just reserved for Alumni, wouldn't that mean the students and players shouldn't do it either? Seems trivial.

Is there a different alma mater for each school, if there was you might have a point but it's the USC system Alma Mater. The USC Mace is used at all schools there isn't a mace for each school, President Pastides is the USC system President. Just calm down junior.

I sing it and raise my hand, I'm not a graduate and don't care what others think. Congrats to them for being alumni but I love the school too, if I needed the degree I'd go and get one.

^I don't have a problem if everyone raised their hands in salute of the University, its a sign of respect its much better than those people (Alums and current students)who leave BEFORE the Alma Mater. I had to do it, those who leave before the Alma Mater disrespect the University.

We had a giant thread on this a couple years ago. It blew up.

The alma mater is different than the fight song. The fight song is for everyone, it's for the athletic teams and their supporters. The alma mater is just that, for the school. The definition of alma mater is "the school, college, or university that one attends or once attended."

I grew up in Columbia going to games and was told it was only for students and alumni. I never did it until I was a student.

personally, if you are part of the school, whether that means student/alumni/donor/parent, i feel you have the right.

if it weren't for my parents I wouldn't be here, their money is the only reason I can toast so they can toast if they want too.

I think it should be a tradition reserved only for alumni and students (all branch institutions included).

Not an alumnus? Stick with the fight songs.

Just like you can join the gamecock club but not the alumni association. We aren't socialist, there is a distinction to be made.

that being said, no one is checking your paperwork.

This. To those who say it is only for Columbia students and Alums, how is it that I can join My Carolina and I get calls every now and then asking for donations to USC?

See, the problem with that "definition" is that it technically includes people who "attended" USC but ended up graduating from another school. So should we just reserve it for students who have actually graduated from the school? If so, then most of the student athletes shouldn't be allowed to do it. Also, does anyone know if the coaches "toast" during the alma mater? Because it's certain almost none of them ever even attended USC. If they do, then somebody needs to set those guys straight.

Why does Upstate have their own alumni association?
