Default Coach Sands.

I know a lot of us hated it when Graham left the program, and maybe some of us felt it would be hard to replace his influence on the production of the running backs, but given the way the backs have performed since Sands has been here (particularly post-Lattimore), do you all feel as though it is due to Sands's coaching, or is it a result of the pure talent we have at the position? Personally, I think a lot of it has to be attributed to the coaching. As we have discussed before (usually in the proving ground forum), recruiting great talent is always necessary, but if you don't have the right coaches in place, that talent can sometimes be wasted, or at least not be realized to its fullest potential.

I can't believe I neglected to mention the offensive line, because that group absolutely deserves credit for the production of the backs (and the QBs). Thank you for giving credit where it was due.

I think it's a combo of all. Plus, O Line is playing beast right now, performing like we thought our D Line would this year.

There's your answer.

Just a personal opinion, but I think Graham was a better coach of fundamentals
and technique than Sands, but at the best, it was a lateral hire when
Graham left and we got Sands. The difference in the Ground game when
Graham was here and now is the O/Line play. I have been VERY impressed
with the work done by this unit so far in the first three games. Not only
are they sealing off holes / alleys for the ground game, and getting guys
to the second level laying down some good blocks, but the thing this
group has lacked sorely in the past decade is just getting whipped on the
snap, and having penetration from the opposition's front almost immediately
after the snap, AND our line has not picked up stunts or blitzes well
AT ALL, but so far this year, we've been able to stop the D/lines of our
opponents from disrupting plays in the backfield from penetration and
they have done a good job of picking up blitzes and stunts. Connor has
a good pocket and time to set and go through progressions and make
better decisions now.

As for Talent, I think you have a guy in Davis who is "AS GOOD AS"
Marcus was at finding the daylight and lowering the pads and hitting it,
but he is a step faster than Marcus was.... in the end, with the better
line, and Mike having more speed, I can see Mike ending up with a much
better career than Marcus did here. ...... Would LOVED to have seen
Marcus run behind this line though.

I've seen a few people make this comment, and it's one I couldn't agree with more. It's an understatement to say I'm happy with what Davis and Wilds have done, but to think of the numbers Lattimore could have put up *especially his freshman year) behind the level of play we're currently getting from the OL blows my mind.

The majority of yards that Marcus got between the 20s WAS ALL MARCUS.
Very little help from the line actually opening lanes for him to run up in.
How many times have you seen Marcus run to the A or B gap and it either
be collapsed almost at the snap of the ball, or either have it fall apart because
of no push by our line, and him bounce it to the outside, or just sheer
muscle through a defender who had him wrapped up in the backfield, and
make positive yards out of it ?
Mike is having an excellent start to this season, but Mike's carries are
through a lot of open lanes and big holes at the line, OR we are getting
him out on the corners with the option pitches or the off tackle run calls.
He does his punishing downfield when he can't run around a man. He (like
Marcus) is capable of getting you that 2-4 yard gain inside when you need
it, but Mike is best when we can get him some daylight outside the A or
B gaps. Marcus just tore it up in that territory but had he gotten some
better blocking, he would have challenged George Roger's totals. I'm
convinced of that.

Not wanting to start the "grand debate" here about that, but I'm not as
much convinced it has as much to do with Shawn Elliott or just finally
(FINALLY) gotten the right mix of talent in the right spots with some major
experience. .... Coach Elliott is going into his fifth season now, and for the
previous four, he has put some really "below average" lines out there for
our backfield. Many of those times, he was playing guys he brought in
originally or guys who were big and strong linemen........ A good O/line
coach could have gotten "decent" to good results from that kind of line,
but we just kept sending out lines that put us in bad situations over and
over. ...... I hope we can continue to bring in guys who will turn into
solid players quickly, but if we are depending on Elliott to develop Good
or average players into an SEC Caliber line, then there are still debatable
issues regarding him and his style of coaching (IMO). I'll give him the
benefit of the doubt though and see what the O/line looks like in the next
two / three years after this season OR even if we can maintain this type
play throughout this year before calling him a bust or wanting him replaced.

A lot of the credit has to go to Mike Davis. For him to come in and beat out Brandon, who is an excellent back, for the starting job speaks to his abilities. Mike runs with an attitude; a huge, pissed off chip on his shoulder that dares someone to tackle him.

As for our overall ground game success, it is a combination of talent, improved OL play and very good coaching. Kudos to all three.

In his last interview, sands talked about leaving yards on the field due to "missing a cut." That is a comment that suggests our rb coach knows what he is doing. Looks like s&c should be getting some love.

Talent, especially along the Oline. Those guys are good getting better, and next year will be the best O- line SC has ever had in the history of the program. Coach Elliot and Sands are also badasses. The future looks so bright for the offense. I get a bit down knowing we'll lose CLowney and Sutton and from what I've seen the DE's in waiting just won't be as good, but the Defense as a whole should be much better next year especially if Vic doesn't pull some Captain Munnerlynn BS.

Ya know what? This man has a point. Why is it when certain units on the team struggle a lot of people cry coaching, but when other areas are doing well, many of those same people fail to mention the coaching involved? Lots of them are quick to say it's an individual's (or group) effort that has caused improvement.

Points to you for a good post.

My understanding of Hampton's situation is you should probably prepare yourself to be disappointed. Hasn't he already said he is likely leaving after this season?

I think Coach Sands was a very good hire. From SC, and was a very good running back for The Citadel. A 4 year all-Southern Conference back.

I remember as a teenager watching Sands & QB Jack Douglas run the triple option down Carolina's throats when The Citadel beat us in 1990 (they recovered an onside kick and then scored the go ahead TD on 4th down with about 20 seconds to go). Painful memory in W-B...right up there with the '88 game with FSU.

Think the development of depth at RB will be the tale of the tape for Coach Sands. Will a Shon Carson or Salley step up and show improvement when needed? How much will David Williams improve for next season?

Pass blocking - I think Sands has really done a great job on getting the RBs to pick up blitzs and helping Shaw in the pocket.

GO COCKS!!

If y'all remember, wasn't there great concern about him leaving after last season?? I'm betting Vic leaves after this year, no matter his potential draft status. That's not to say that I wouldn't love to see him back next year - He could really step up further as a leader on the 'D'..... we shall see.
