I truly believe that as the season progresses we will improve to the point that even if we don't win the East, we will become a juggernaut that rolls through the rest of the season.

Did anyone notice that nobody from Bama was on the first 2 lists and that they were in last place as a team?

Yeah. Look at the Team Sacks list. In last place is Bama and next to last is UGA. I'm gonna guess that's BC they've played against mobile QBs first few weeks.

I think the real issue on defense thus far is our small size and inexperience
with the second level (Linebackers) and the younger Secondary players.
A D/line that is our most experienced group on the roster, can only be
as aggressive as the unit backing them up. In the past we could go balls
to the wall with our D/Line because they knew our linebackers and safeties
were going to have their backs if they guessed wrong, or missed an
assignment. ... Now, the first line of defense has to play somewhat
cautious and a little more under control because missing a tackle or guessing
wrong can (and has) resulted in big gains on the ground. The inexperience
is also causing our secondary coaches to play a lot more cautions in the
cover schemes, and so far, our opposition has been taking advantage of
that in the passing game.

Out of frustration, I placed a lot of blame on the coaches of those groups
after a couple of games. ... Still not convinced that it ISN'T a lot of
coaching issues, but I'm hoping that as the season progresses, and we
make adjustments in our second line defense, that we'll get better and
we'll get the young guys some aid until they "grow up". There's no better
way to get GOOD at this level than to get into the heat of the battle and
make some mistakes and learn from those. We just need to sure up a
couple of key positions while our young players learn, and hopefully get
better as the season progresses.

If you give a team that many offensive plays you can get a lot of stats to me its all about points allowed if we were holding teams to 10-17 points a game I would be happy.

As usual I tend to agree with spurt. I've watched the Georgia and vandy games over and there ARE differences in the way this dine is playing compared to last years, but the larger problems do stem from the middle lbs.

This years dine is often (not always) driving into opposing olines and then staying in those blocks...as if they are trying to show that they are stronger than the olines. Last season we were most often throwing oline blocks off and pursuing.

Often lbs are in position and yet seem to take on the guy coming at them, instead of avoiding blocks and plugging holes.

We are actually playing well on defense for the most part, but we are giving way too many throws deep and we are giving way too many third downs and points.

If we get this tweaked we will be in a position to win out. If not I see us losing three more games.

We held unc to 10 and should have held vandy to 10 if not for stupid turnovers with short fields.

And we held Georgia to... Or wait we didn't stop georgia from scoring. My concerns are more with how many long passes have already been completed on us. More will be coming next Saturday too...if we haven't found a way to play man coverage if we can't depend on the youth in our secondary to read the correct place to be. Too many receivers are getting wide open on us.

Agreed, Bama's OL should've dominated us, but that game back in 2010, we won because our DL played the most conservative game imagineable, occupied blockers and let the LBs make plays on what was considered the best RB duo in the country that year, that's the way we should play running downs until our LB shows they can handle and aggressive front breaking contain.

I still think we may need to play some 50 when we're getting run on. It strengthens the middle and pushes the ends a little wider. It costs us the spur, but still leaves two LB's to take angles toward the tackle, cover short, and gives us 4 DB's to cover and provide run support. When our linemen can play upfield, the ends can seal the edge and disrupt the power sweeps and likely get pressure with the quickness we have. On too many plays our linebackers have been run over and run-by on third (and 4th) down. It needn't be our main alignment, but can work when needed.

I like this...I'm not much of a defensive guy, but give EJ credit for understanding the sum of the parts when it comes to defense. He understood the key was to make an offense earn their pts...and it worked for us a lot of times. Of course, this led to some conservative moments when we needed to take some risks.

I miss EJ. I don't think UGA would have owned us if he'd have been here.
