Default #11 Recruiting class in Nation

South Carolina baseball's recruiting class has been ranked No. 11 in the nation as announced by Collegiate Baseball on Friday afternoon. This year's class includes 21 newcomers to the Garnet & Black.

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...092013aab.html

I was blown away by Wil Crowe's stats!

Quote:
Wil Crowe - RHP - Sevierville, Tenn. (Piegeon Forge HS)
- 2013 MLB Draft Selection (31st round/Cleveland Indians)
- 2013 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Tennessee
- 2013 Louisville Slugger High School All-American by Collegiate Baseball
- Helped Pigeon Forge to 2013 Class AA championship in Tennessee, winning pitcher in title game in 2013
- As a senior in 2013, went 15-1 with a 0.46 ERA in 91 innings with 172 strikeouts. Also hit .448 with 12 homers.
- Rated No. 36 best overall prospect for 2013 MLB Draft by Keith Law of ESPN
- Rated No. 3 best high school prospect in Tennessee and No. 58 best high school prospect in the nation by Perfect Game USA
- Rated No. 6 best overall prospect in Tennessee and No. 141 best overall prospect in nation for 2013 MLB Draft by Baseball America
- 2013 Southeast All-Region by Perfect Game USA
- Named to 2012 Tennessee Sportswriters Association All-State team
- 2012 District 3-AA MVP and All-PrepXtra First Team honors
- As a junior in 2012, went 11-4 with a 0.89 ERA with 143 strikeouts, also hit .449 with 10 doubles and 36 RBI
- As a junior pitched a perfect game in his first start of the 2012 season
- Played for Knoxville Stars AAU team; helped lead team to 2012 Continental Amateur Baseball Association 17U World Series championship, earned MVP Honors
- His father, Tim Crowe, played college baseball at Milligan College
Looks like we loaded up with pitching, and should also improve our fielding % from last year!

I am ready for Carolina Baseball already!

Thats pretty good and says a lot about the state of South Carolina's HS baseball. But to compete year in and year out we need to get classes in the top five. Hopefully Holbrook and company can coach up these players to a higher level of play. When you get teams like Vandy and UF getting the top players in the country its tough to compete.
Of course if you get the guys to commit and can't keep them out of the pros it does no good either. Which leads us to question how the two Jack-Leg clones at UF and Vandy do it.

Good grief, we just win two national championships and are one game away from one and we are complaining about our recruiting classes...whatever the staff is doing, it's working.

We'll be fine. Unlike the JackLegg clones, our coaches know how to make guys better than they ever thought they could be, meaning they know how to coach. They know how to get the best out of each and every player in the dugout, regardless of whether they were a great prospect coming out of HS. Too often the more prima donnas you have, you don't end up with a "TEAM".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we win our b2b championships with guys that were in top 5 recruiting classes the 2-3 years leading up to them? I thought we had excellent recruiting in 2007-2009.

Just researched it...

Well we didn't rank in 2007 or 2009, but we had the #1 class in 2008 with guys who directly contributed to the championships in '10, and '11.

However, the unranked 2009 class had guys who were also on the 2010 & 2011 NC teams.

In all honesty, I think you're getting yourself worked up over nothing. I mean, if we dropped below #15 in recruiting rankings, and stayed there for many years, then I'd worry. But honestly, it really isn't worth getting all worked up about.

I prefer to focus on what guys actually do on the field of play. Too many times in my 30+ years of watching and studying college baseball have I seen great recruiting classes do absolutely nothing when it really matters, and teams that you never expected to do a darn thing surprise the hell out of you.

FSU has had the #1 class NUMEROUS times, yet they lead in no championships.

And it could be worse...we could be at #32 like someone else we know. :)

This ranking was per Collegiate Baseball Newspaper....it is the 2013 class, which is for the 2013-14 season (next season).

Last cycle's class (2012-13) was ranked 10th by the same ranking service. The 2011-12 class was ranked #1 nationally. The 2010-11 class was ranked 7th. The 2009-10 class was ranked 30th, and the 2008-09 class was ranked 13th, but as others stated above those classes held most of the talent that played for the championship 3 straight years winning two. Baseball America had our 2008 class unranked, but revisited the classes for that cycle last season and re-ranked our class #1 overall, based solely on what they accomplished on the field ultimately.

2007-08 was ranked 18th, 2006-07 was ranked #1, 2005-06 was #1, 2004-05 was 9th, 2003-04 was #1 (first ever top ranking), 2002-03 was 8th.

This is as far back as the news releases show for the baseball program on the official USC website. The one for our first ever #1-ranked class (the 2003-04 class) states "This is South Carolina's fourth consecutive Top 10 recruiting class and the first time in school history that a class has been ranked No. 1" , so that means the 2000-01, and 2001-02 classes were both top-10 classes per Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, in addition to the 2002-03 class above.

So it's interesting that some here are bemoaning that we're not pulling #1 or top-5 classes every year, but truth is that 2 of the 3 lowest-ranked classes we've had this century (per Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, at least) are the very ones that have had the biggest roles in leading us to our greatest seasons ever in the program. Further, that from 2000-01 through 2006-07 classes - 7 consecutive classes - USC brought in top-10 rated classes, with THREE of those classes being ranked #1 overall per Collegiate Baseball Newspaper at the end of that run. Yet while we made it to the CWS in '03 and '04, we failed to make it back until 2010, despite having teams those years that were loaded with talent from nationally #1 classes (Smoak, Darnell, Havens, Grinestaff, Mack, Crisp, Enders, Cisco, Atwood, etc.)...

What does that tell us?

I would imagine that baseball recruiting is even murkier to analyze than football recruiting. At least in football measurements like height, weight, 40 time, and strength numbers provide important indicators. Whereas in baseball the important skills are largely intangible and often defy measurement.

I think "trust the coaches" applies even more strongly here than it does in football.

Absolutely! Also, you can't measure the intangibles that guys like Roth, Wingo, et al brought to the dugout which, IMO, were a much bigger factor in our winning 2 titles. All those other years that we had great classes in the past, we were not a TEAM in the true sense of the word, nor did we have fun and trust each other as the title teams did. (Jeez...I feel like I say this each and every year!)

Just because you have a stellar recruiting class does not automatically mean you'll do great things, nor is the reverse true. Baseball is one sport where you MUST play the game on the field in order to find out how good you really are.

Baseball is about production. Look at florida a few years ago. They brought in 3 top 5 classes in a row and we beat them in the CWS. Talent get's you wins in the regular season coaching and production gets you wins in the Post season.

(Jeez...I feel like I say this each and every year!)

Just because you have a stellar recruiting class does not automatically mean you'll do great things, nor is the reverse true. Baseball is one sport where you MUST play the game on the field in order to find out how good you really are.
You are right.
YOu got to have moxy..and no recruiting site can measure that.
You also need guys that are clutch.
Last year, we didn't have that on defense.
This year, we may have it with Schrock a year older and Mooney coming in at SS.
