Default Power offense...

As we saw in the second half on Saturday..it works very well with Big OL and a great back...I really hope to see more of this in the future. It brings a whole new demension to our Offense and if you noticed,UGA,LSU,and Bama dominate with exactly what we did..OL,Fullback,TB until you stop it! I'm really hoping Blue(coming in next year) and Rainey will get a DiMarco type roll. Rainey was supposed to be good with the ball in his hands and have great catching ability...thoughts?

True, but we are down one back already, and we know VERY WELL the kind of wear that kind of offense has on a runningback.

I'm hoping we'll see Williams a little bit this weekend and we won't have to use Davis as much.

Also, it's worth nothing that UK ranks 100th in the nation in run defense. We should be able to take advantage of that.

We are bigger than UCF up front. That doesn't mean we can do the same stuff to Florida or Arkansas or Tennessee. The power I with 2 TE's should certainly be a part of our arsenal. I'd also like to see Davis run out of the pistol because of his vision and cutting ability. We will need to practice and run a versatile offense because of teams' ability to scheme against what they've seen and adjust to what happens in the game. In the 4th quarter, UCF was packing the box (10 at one point) and were very vulnerable to deeper throws, but we were running to secure the ball and eat clock. We hit them big with an intermediate throw to Adams, wide open behind the LB. Having an array of schemes is what we will need to beat the tougher teams left on our schedule. Clemson will crowd the line and use pressure just as they did Georgia. We will have to beat pressure by throwing the ball. We have weapons, and we need to develop and use them all.

I hope we come out and establish the run in the remainder of our games. This helps set our passing game as well. Our OL is much improved and there's no reason not to use them that way. All good teams can run the ball....not to mention controlling the clock.

It works when it works....but it doesn't work against some teams. Teams that can get penetration can disrupt it, and put us in obvious passing downs.

Sometimes all it takes is one defensive stop to kill a drive.

Default Re: Power offense...

Here's the issue with what we saw Saturday... We watched film for two
weeks, studying the UCF team and devised a gameplan we thought
would work against their Offense and Defense.....THEY DID THE SAME THING
FOR TWO WEEKS. .... Obviously, early on, they had the better Offensive
and Defensive gameplan of the two teams, that and combined with the
poor fudementals of tackling from our LBs and secondary, and the
total confusion of coverage schemes from our DBs and you got what you
got in the game Saturday.

The reason the I formation and inside ground attack worked against UCF
in the third quarter was that we had not run it all year long, and UCF didn't
plan for it. It was one of the good adjustments we made in the game that
actually did work, and it was basically what won the game for us.
It should be credited to Shawn Elliott who made the suggestion to Spurrier
at halftime, just to line up in the Power I and go right at them. ... If any
of you recall the UK game from last season, where it was almost a
carbon copy (offensively) of what we saw this past Saturday, we did
exactly the same thing against them in the second half, AGAIN at the
request of Shawn Elliott at halftime just to line up in a power set, and
let Lattimore do his thing ... .It worked. It worked then because we had
not run it as a base offense all year, and UK hadn't planned for it defensively
and it clicked. We don't need to go to a power I set and just hand the
ball off to Davis 30-35 times a game from now on. I would venture to say
that it would not work as well this week coming, since UK has seen us
do it now, and would be planning some type of scheme to slow it down.
What we need to do on offense is continue to gameplan according to what
we see on film during the week, BUT ... be willing to make on the fly
adjustments if the opposition shuts down what we are doing..As was the
case Saturday... Unfortunately, those kinds of adjustments aren't happening
on defense the way they have been for the past 3-4 years. Mainly due
to youth, inexperiance and poor fundamentals from our defensive guys.
Whatever we have to do, to get that under control needs to happen
quickly. We're four games into the season, and instead of seeing
improvement on that side of the line, we are taking steps backwards. This
is not a good thing to see from a young team.
