Default Scott Carpenter Has Died

Cmdr Scott Carpenter, USN (Ret) has passed away at the age of 88. He was one of the original 7 Mercury astronauts, and his passing leaves John Glenn as the only surviving member of that group.

I was fortunate enough to meet him back in 2007 during an autograph show at KSC that just happened to coincide with the launch of the Atlantis. This was the only time I was at the Cape and got to watch a shuttle launch. All of my other trips over, the launches were scrubbed due to Florida weather.

It's sad that our space program died before he did.

The Cape has a full launch schedule. Private industry is moving into the low orbit business and that is a good thing. We are moving forward with unmanned hard science missions and are proceeding with planning for manned trips to Mars. Our space program is not dead. BTW, Carpenter was highly respected around here.

The things that man has seen and experienced he takes to his resting place. God bless and God speed. Thank you for your contributions to both this country and this world. What a ride that must have been.

The Mercury Seven, and the ones that followed were my heroes in the 60's. It was such an exciting time to be young and alive, soaking up every tid bit of info on the race to the moon.
Job well done, and rest in peace....God Speed Scott Carpenter!

The seven Mercury astronauts have been and continue to be inspirational to me since high school. Fearless is the word that comes to mind. Courageous also is a great descriptor.

Godspeed, Scott Carpenter! Rest in peace...
