Default Carolina Stadium Issues

Has anyone heard about the issues at Carolina Stadium?
I remember hearing last season about some structural damage due to the land under the stadium settling, and how repairs were being made. A close friend of mine works with a surveying company, and he says the issues the stadium is facing are significant. Apparently the land it was built-on was actually at one point a landfill?

Anyone know anything further?

They are fixing them. Will be ready for first pitch Feb 14.

The problem was that when they were building the stadium they took out all the granite (after they acted surprised to find all that granite there in the first place) and didn't replace it with substance strong enough to support the stadium. They have to drill the supports even deeper into the granite that is still there.

I understand they're attempting to address them, but the word I had heard from my buddy, whose opinion I do trust since this is his job, is that the issues might be beyond permanent solutions to the existing site. Something like where the university has to continuously take the measures you mentioned, always playing catch-up.

Of course, my initial reaction is that there must be some type of contractual language that would allow the university to hold the entity responsible for doing the original assessment of the land financially responsible for these issues.

It really is unfortunate, given how beautiful the stadium is, for it to suffer from negligent work prior to its construction.

I was there in July, and they had already removed the concrete terrace area down the 3rd base line, reinforced the footings, and replaced the whole section with new concrete. Looked like they were about done.

I can understand his position as well. I am just going off what I've been told. They are doing what they feel needs to be done to make this a one time fix. The filler settled down to the granite. The supports, from what I understand, were not drilled into the granite in the first place, and that is what they are doing this time to prevent this from happening in the future.

I still can't get over how surprised they were to find "so much" granite underneath since one of the largest, if not the largest, granite quarries in the State is less than a mile away.

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done. I was there a week ago.

If memory serves, they just started in July, as they didn't start construction until after baseball camps were concluded July 12.

Well, again- whether its a one-time fix or not, I only hope the university isn't left footing the bill in the long term. There should be language in the original contract that protects it from this type of problems.

If there is not language in the contract to protect the university, then shame on whoever wrote it up.

I'm sure the university is not paying for it. I would assume the general contractor & engineers are on the hook and possibly the sitework/concrete subs contractor.
