Default Texas youth football league getting rid of participation trophies

A North Texas youth football group has decided that it will stop awarding trophies simply for participation.

In order to get a statue, players with the Keller Youth Association's football program will have to advance to and win the league's Super Bowl. This year, the league will award participation medals to participants instead.

"Going forward participation medals and trophies will be going away," the group wrote on its Facebook page.

The post goes on to say that the KYA board feels participation medals and trophies do not send kids the right message.

"Life does not give you a participation medal or trophy. Life makes you earn everything you get," the group wrote.

So they go to practice and play hard and they don't get anything? Why does anyone on Jacksonville get paid? The parents paid for the kid the be in the league, bought them a helmet, pads, cleats, uniform. Took him to practice and games. The least they can do is give them a little something to say thanks for playing. The ones that actually won the league wouldn't be champions of jack squat without those guys. I am not saying it is something to be proud of, but a small token of appreciation? Come on.

I dont understand what the big deal is. Thats the way it was when I was back in the day. The wussification of America needs to stop. If you lose, you dont get anything. That championship trophy that we could EARN at the end of the year was what we played for.

Well if you're going for the participation trophy why are you going at all? Just go to trophy shop and buy a "Good Kid" trophy and skip all the hassle. Why do you need a tangible object to feel like you "got anything?" You get the enjoyment of playing football and whatever skills and knowledge you've obtained through the experience, and maybe since you had a good excuse to make your kid run around you will have to worry less about the growing problem of child hood obesity. I feel like all of that is way more important than a stupid trophy that says "thanks for coming" that will probably end up in a box somewhere or the garbage in less than a year.

I'm seriously hoping this was meant as sarcasm

If not, well- the idea that kids need a 'token of appreciation' for playing a sport is literally the most ridiculous thing I've heard / read all week, and that says a lot given that I read Dabo's statements from his press conference this week.

The kids who don't win the championship don't need a token of appreciation- what they were awarded with was the opportunity to play a game and be part of a team.

Division title...still counts.

Same way as the NFL- winning the NFC or AFC is still a title, regardless of whether you get demolished in the Super Bowl.

yes, but this article only gave trophies to those that won a championship...and people were arguing the merits. Just pointing out that we like to boast a divisional title (that we shared)...Just wondering where we draw the line. I guess it is when we get a part of the pie.

And winning the NFC/AFC is more akin to winning the SEC IMO, not winning the SEC East. That would be more like winning the NFC East etc.

I know when I was younger I felt embarassed to get a trophy for just playing. I wanted the championship trophy thats it. You play to win the game, simple as that. All the participation trophies are in the garbage the only trophies of my childhood that are at my parents house still to this day are the trophies I received for winning. We didnt even keep second place trophies. Losing is a lesson that you werent good enough to win and you must work that much harder to be better and then maybe you will be able to win. You shouldnt get a pat on the back or a good job for losing, you should get a kick in the ass and motivation to be better and do better next time to prevent losing.

I'm confused ... so does everyone at least get a medal or do they not?

I actually have no problem with a participation medal or something along that line. They shouldn't get a trophy ... they didn't win anything (coughclemsoncodivisionchampscough)

Where did you read that? The article I read from this thread was that they have given participation trophies in the past, and now they'll only get trophies if they make it to their super bowl...
