Default Yeah...Another Snake Encounter

Used to find these things all around the house where I grew up, but
for some reason, I haven't seen one since I was in my late 20s. Ran
up on this one today and couldn't resist reliving my childhood.

We kept green snakes when I was growing up. We had a decent sized terrarium and enough crickets and moths to keep the little guy well fed. It was always fascinating watching them stalk and attack their meal.

Nice to see those pics!

When I was in my mid teens my best friend and I would catch these and
garter snakes all the time. We'd end up with about 5-10 every week and
there was a guy who lived behind us that bought them from us for $5
each. He was taking them to the flea market and selling them for $20
each. We caught so many for a couple of summers, it got to where we
could almost spot them in the dark when they moved.

My mom was deathly afraid of snakes and after she almost died of a
heart attack a couple of times running up on the Green Snakes or Garter
snakes I'd hide in my room, I finally started trying to hide them in an old
aquarium outside the house....until she found them out there. .... she
made it clear to me she didn't want snakes in OR AROUND the house
Period. Took me about 40 years, two wives and a loss of a lot of hair
before I finally got to own a snake which is what I really always wanted to do.

My mom wasn't very fond of snakes either. She was ok with it when my dad was able to convince her that green snakes were pretty harmless. Now, my grandfather, ok the other hand, refused to come to the house when he found out we had a snake. Growing up, my friends always enjoyed coming over to the house because we had unusual pets. Had green snakes and a cockatiel.

My days of having pet snakes are over because my wife is deathly afraid of them too. She's ok with a bird though, so I still have a cockatiel.

Most of the ones I used to catch up in Simpsonville were white on the
bottom. I've caught a couple that were yellowish, but this one was a
pretty bright yellow on it's underside. ... I actually had a quick thought
about keeping it, but decided against it. 1. I was headed back to my
office and I didn't have anything in the truck to put it in, and I wasn't
too keen on the idea of driving about 3 miles trying to hold a snake at the
same time. 2. I've pretty much decided to not raise wild caught snakes
anymore. The first one I caught and owned was a very pretty corn snake
(the kind I've always wanted to have). I kept it for 5 years and it grew
up really healthy, but every year in the spring and early summer, she would
come out in the open and TEAR HER CAGE UP ! .. she went off her feed
for weeks at a time and a little longer each year. When she hit 9 weeks
without eating last year, I decided to turn her loose back into the wild.
The urge to breed was making it way too tough for me to keep her locked
up, and I really got frustrated trying to get her to eat. ..The two captive
bred corns I have now have had no trouble eating, and I've had them
(1 for 3 years, and the oldest female for 4). I'm going to try to bred these
two maybe this coming spring to see what is involved in raising hatchling
snakes. It's something I'm thinking about doing after I retire as a hobby.

It's funny ... maybe just because we don't go out actively looking for
them, or spend as much time outside as we did when we were kids, but
I used to find Green Snakes, Garter Snakes, Black Snakes... even run up
on copperheads all the time when I was in my teens and into my early
20s. Right after I got married, my wife and I moved into a house in Mauldin
and while doing yardwork and walking around there, I found more snakes
than at any other time in my life. An abundance of Green Snakes, Garters
and Eastern Kings. .... Since that time, the number of snakes I've run
across has greatly dropped off, and even a string of years just before
and just after moving to Columbia where I didn't see any at all.

The past few years, I've found this "loop" of road here in Columbia where
I've been seeing an abundance of them, and a wide variety as well. I
drive around there very often in the Spring and Summer and have found
snakes I never used to see in the upstate, as well as a lot of breeds
I haven't seen in a long time. Finding this Green Snake the other day
brought back a lot of fun memories.
