Default Spurrier's Patience down the stretch

This year I have been frustrated by some of Steve's borderline reckless decisions. Between running the same play on 4th down at the goal line at UGA, the horrible game management at the end of Tennessee, and going for it on 4th at the end of the first half at Mizzou, I have been wondering if he's getting too impatient.

In the 4th quarter and overtime last night, I thought he showed a lot of restraint. Not going for two in the overtime and at the end of the second half, not panicking and going for it when Fry had to hit a 40-yarder, and the clever play-calling at the end showed a lot of confidence that reminded me why he is such a great coach.

Now I'm not bashing the HBC, cus I love him, so don't crucify me. I'm just saying that he coached his best game of the season and one of the best quarters of his life last night, and hats off to him.

Well, he calls by his gut which is good and can be bad. He's just a guy, and can make bad choices when he play calls. At UF, if you could frustrate him and make him impatient, he could be beat. I agree that he called a good game. I will echo what he said to a caller that complained about his playcalling after UT, and that is if we would have won, it's doubtful anyone would have complained. (I think we would have....)

If Mizzou scored on that last drive...a TD..then we would be on his ass like toughness on Connor.

As much as UF fans loved their HBC, he was known to call some dumb plays and drove them nuts at times.
I get mad at some of it, but I can't make any of it personal....Steve Spurrier is good people.

The thing that irritated me the most was the mismanagement of the clock to end the half or the game. It happened frequently in Spurrier's early years but he got better and I hadn't noticed any in a couple seasons. Then UT happened and I was flummoxed. Didn't see that coming!

He rolled up about seven quarters of questionable coaching and smoked em in the win at Mizzou! Absolutely top notch calls that were executed in critical moments.
Magnificent!

Spurrier called a great timeout on Mizzou's next last possession of regulation. It was after a 2nd down play. Quite few posters in the game thread asked "why are we calling a timeout?" But burning the timeout was worth it because the D threw Mizzou's running back for a loss on 3d down.

I think the thing about taking risks and being creative as a playcaller is that you have to be willing to watch it all occasionally blow up in your face. Last week against Tennessee, Steve got in his own way too often and it all blew up in his face. But when he needed to dig into his playbook and come up with some answers against Mizzou, we were all reminded of why he's one of the best playcallers, if not the best playcaller, in the history of college football. His feel for when to call those screen passes was a thing of absolute beauty.

If Spur Dog has some talent on offense, he can pick apart anybody. He's done it for decades. Frankly, the fact that his playcalling has worked at three schools and across the years is a testament to just how radically adaptable and creative he can be when his hand is forced.

We're going to need to make some big plays in some big games from here on out if we want to have some special things happen. We're also going to need some big play calls, too. And at the risk of it all blowing up in our face occasionally, there's no one I'd rather have calling those plays than Spurs.

It was a helluva game for Connor, the defensive backs, Elliot Fry, and several others last night. It was also one helluva game for Spurrier, too. He flat out coached his ass off.

To defend SOS in the Uga game.

I thought the running call was bad until I rewatched the game. The play was a td but we got some bad luck. It was b shell's job to block the lb who made the tackle but the de dove at the legs of the guard and got a piece of shell. He tripped and did not make it to the spot and the lb jumped ahead of him as he tried to lunge at him.

Things happen.

I thought going for it on our own 30 last night was dumb though.

SOS almost went for it on 4th and two with approx. three minutes to go in the UT game - called two timeouts to contemplate it. If we miss, UT is in range already to go up, but we more than likely get the ball back with sufficient time. If we make, we likely run out the clock.

Thing is, our punting and field position was horrid in that game. I was actually hoping he would have gone for the 4th and two during the game. Tough choices.

I agree on the UGA call, would much rather line up under center on the 1 yard line then get in the shotgun.

If you haven't learned to deal with his playcalling by now, you never will. It's what makes him who he is.

Spot on brother, Spurrier is Spurrier deal with it. Hes the best coach we will ever have here at USC so enjoy it while it last. Its been the greatest years of my life watching USC go from bottom of the barrell to perennial power. Spurrier is alright in my book. Never question the visor.

In response to the UGA call...it was a bad call. We were down by 11. We should have kicked the FG to go down by 1 possession. That would keep us in the game. If we didn't get in (which we didn't) then we still need 2 possessions. The old saying is to get the points when you can, and we left an easy 3 out there. That didn't lose the game though, because there were several big plays that lost that game including the 3rd and long 85 yd TD, the onside kick, Connor's fumble, etc.
