Default How Antonio Allen Was Able to Contain Rob Gronkowski

This is from the game against the Pats a few weeks ago (sorry to those who have already seen it), but I thought it was cool analysis on how well Allen played that game. (See link.)

How Antonio Allen Was Able to Contain Rob Gronkowski

Allen was a strong safety in college at South Carolina, but was as much of a Sam linebacker as he was a safety and developed a reputation for being a stout run defender. His coverage skills were so untested that he was not drafted until deep into the seventh round by the Jets in 2012. In fact, Allen was the second safety the Jets drafted that day after they had taken Josh Bush a round earlier.

Having seized the starting job from Jaiquawn Jarrett and turned in his best performance as a pro last Sunday, it is clear that Allen has much more untapped potential than any team, including the Jets, could have imagined.

Of course, he fails to mention that Allen was used in man coverage against tight-ends in college, so his performance there shouldn't be any surprise. What kind of Defense do the Jets run?

46 Defense

Great for Allen, knew he was a steal when he was drafted.

“Some say the 46 is just an eight-man front,” he said. “That’s like saying Marilyn Monroe is just a girl.”

Did anyone here think AA would not be one of the biggest steals of his draft class?

the spur is essentially a nickelback and allen's last year here we felt so comfortable in his one on one coverage skills that when teams went 3 and 4 wide on obvious passing downs we left him in there in more of a true nickleback role. its what killed us in the arkansas game that year. while theres been some concern about how the spur doesnt necessarily translate easily to the pros, youre seeing us develop guys with a variety of skills that enable them to find a home in the pros at particular position whether thats at strong safety or olb.

and with the nfl going to a lot of spread and qb runs, that versatility is invaluable. that and allen is talented.

In that arkansas game they played with an extra wr. Jarius Wright in the slot and he ran by Demario Jeffery the entire game.

Petrinos passing schemes are some of the best in the game.
