Default Coastal Preview

I'm bored and want to savor our last two games. I know they're FCS and many of us are sure to have a difficult time getting excited for the game but here's a little preview I put together for the Chanticleers:

OVERVIEW

Conference: Big South (FCS)
Stadium: Brooks Stadium(9,214) Conway, SC
First Season: 2003
Overall Record: 81-45 (.643)
Conference Championships: 6
Playoff Appearances: 3 (1-3)
Record vs. FBS: 0-6
Head Coach: Joe Mogila (Fordham Univ), 18-6 @ CCU
2013 Record: 10-1
Ranking as of 11NOV2013: #9 FCS

2013 TEAM STATS

Passing YPG: 228 (#50 FCS)
Rushing YPG: 283 (#3 FCS)
PPG: 45.5 (#3 FCS)
YPG: 512 (#9 FCS)
Opponents YPG: 417 (#85 FCS)
Opponents PPG: 25.5 (#59 FCS)
Turnover Margin: +8 (#18 FCS)

OPPONENTS SO FAR

@ South Carolina State: CCU-27 SCSU-20 Early season shootout against a good (8-3) team, SCSU choked in the 4Q.

vs. Furman: CCU-35 FU-28 CCU controlled the entire game but it was always close. 6-5 Furman launched a 4Q rally but CCU squeaked out a win.

@ Eastern Kentucky: CCU-51 EKU-32 Lots of action in the 1st Half with CCU leading 31-24 into the half. CCU kept scoring in the 2nd Half...EKU didn't. One of four games where CCU went for 600+ yards and gashed them on the ground with 4 TD's and 339 rushing yards.

vs. Hampton: CCU-50 Hamp-17 Not even close. CCU had a 40 point lead at half, Hampton scored twice in the 4Q to make it look less embarrassing. 6 rushing TD's for CCU.

@ Elon: CCU-53 Elon-28 Similar to EKU game, lots of first half scoring, CCU kept going in the second half, Elon didn't. Most yards CCU has had in a game at 652, 355 on the ground. Elon (2-9) is a bad team.

vs. Garner Webb CCU-42 GW-7 Blowout just like it looks.

@ Liberty: CCU-55 LU-52 A real battle for the whole game against a decent (7-4) Liberty Team. One of only two games where CCU went into the half down by double digits. CCU won in 2OT. One of only three games where they passed for more yards than they ran, most passing yards in a game (319) and their only game with +300 yards.

Virginia Military: CCU-66 VMI-27 Blowout against a bad VMI team but the Keydets did score 24 first half points. CCU did this with their starting QB out.

vs. Charlotte: CCU-50 Char-25 Not much to say about this one. Big, 600+ yard day for CCU but they did let a bad Charlotte team score 18 first half points

@Charleston Southern: CSU-31 CCU-26 CCU's only loss. Shutdown 6-24 at half. This was the second best defense CCU faced and just a bad game for some season lows - 2nd fewest plays run, 3rd worst game for rushing yards, fewest first downs in a game.

vs. Presbyterian CCU-46 PC-13 Recovery blowout win against a bad team. Second most yards CCU has had a game and the most rushing yards (410) they've had this season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Sophomore QB Alex Ross
65% completion percentage, 17 TD's, 6 INT's, 2282 yards. Is a dual threat and has run for 365 yards and 6 TD's though CSU shut him down.

Senior RB Lorenzo Taliaferro
Averages 6.7 YPC. Has 1466 yards and 23 TD's on the season. Furman and CSU shut him down.

Senior WR Matt Hazel
He won't have to play a good game for them as they rely on the run but he's had a good season at 49 receptions, 700+ yards and 6 TD's.

NOTES ON THE GAME
  • CCU is run heavy They average 47 run attempts to 26 pass attempts per game. Average yardage is about 280 rushing to 230 passing. They pick up twice as many first downs running than they do passing. They do tend to pass more (about 50:50) when playing a team with a better defense though
  • Two Point Conversions CCU has attempted 17 conversions this year, usually early in games and even when winning by double digits. I'm not sure if this is normal in the FCS.
  • Carolina vs. FCS teams We're 8-0 since 2000 against FCS teams (I didn't feel like digging back any farther). This is unusually late to be playing them in the year as before 2011 we usually played them in the first four weeks. Average score is 33 to 13. We've played Wofford four times, and it's been close twice: '08 & '06.
  • CCU vs. FBS teams CCU is 0-6 against FBS teams losing by an average of 44 to 7. Just looking at AQ teams they've played (factoring out Toledo and Kent State) CCU averages 3 points compared to an FBS average of 51.
  • What's with the name? Is it a real word? According to CCU's site a "Chanticleer is a proud and fierce rooster who dominates the barnyard." Is that a nod to us?
  • Disgusting Connection CCU has only fielded a football team for the past ten years. Their founding coach, David Bennett, is a Clemson grad.

So what do you think CockyTalk?

I'll be conservative and say 42 to 7.

We'll be fine if we play good defense. Our offense should have a great day as CCU's defense is weak.

Former Gamecock DeMario Bennett is their 2nd-leading receiver behind Hazel I believe. Coastal has improved substantially at the FCS level, but they still play out of one of the weakest conferences at the level. Traditional powerhouses Furman, Hampton, Elon, and Gardner Webb are all experiencing some of their worst seasons in recent years, and Coastal has capitalized. They are my home-town college and I guess after USC I follow them the most and wish them much success, but they really should be in over their heads next Saturday...

We should put up 50 on them considering Liberty had over 600 yards of offense against them.

App State beat Michigan
James Madison beat Virginia Tech
Eastern Washington beat Oregon State
McNeese State beat South Florida
Furman beat North Carolina

Just a few upsets recently.

And don't forget: The Citadel beat South Carolina and Arkansas.

FCS ball isn't SEC ball. Its 65 scholarships rather than 85, and most of their players were a tad too short, or a step too slow, to play in a major conference like the SEC/PAC/ACC etc, etc.

But, it's not bad football either. And sleep on them, and they can beat you.

Coastal is pretty good. USC should win by 35 points. But, that's only 5 plays if you think about it. If 10 plays go really wrong, it could be close. Wofford scared USC a few years back.

Wofford scared me because of the option offense. They try to run clock on you like Princeton does in basketball. Coastal seems to be a team that is a more conventional type of offense. This is the Gamecocks though and we seem to play to the level of competition.

To someone who watches FCS football how normal is it for a team to go for two point conversions 37% of the time like CCU does?

They even try when they're winning by a fair amount and the magic coach sheet shouldn't call for a conversion. I don't think their kicker is that bad but I didn't really look at it.

[*] What's with the name? Is it a real word? According to CCU's site a "Chanticleer is a proud and fierce rooster who dominates the barnyard." Is that a nod to us?

The Chanticleer is from Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales featuring the rooster as you described. It is actually in the Nun's Priest as The Cantebury Tales is a collection of stories. Yes, Chanticleer is connected to the Gamecock because when Coastal was a two year branch of USC, they were known as the Trojans, and the school decided it wanted a new mascot more connected to the Gamecock of the main campus, so Chanticleer was chosen.

I think South Carolina will be ok as long as Connor doesnt tip off the run/pass play selection by keeping his legs shoulder width apart and even on every play.

folks outside of SC will be able to watch it on there, however it will be blacked out on WatchESPN for people in state, as the PPV provider pays for exclusive "first run" rights in state.
