Default Something I realized

I was thinking about the recent history of our football program, starting when Lou Holtz first came to the university, and I realized a trend that will continue to keep us "just right there."

By no means is this a bash on anyone. This is just a realization that has come to mind and how we are always "so close," but never get over the hump... Now, I do not know, or actually care of why anyone who gets a free ride to school for 4 years, doesn't take full advantage of that... I don't care to venture that way because I will never know why those men decide to leave early. Be it personal, financial, bordom, whatever... But, when I feel that we would be in a lot better place if some of our star athletes would have stayed just that 1 more year...

If Troy Williamson would have stayed his senior year, him and Sidney Rice would have done SO much damage. If sidney rice didn't leave early him and Mo Brown for 1 year, could have done amazing things... If Ko Simpson stayed his Senior year, our D would not have collapsed like it did in 2006... If Stephon Gilmore, Alshon Jeffery, and Tori Gurley stayed, 11-1 before the bowl game, maybe even in the SEC... If Ace Stayed, I believe we would have been undefeated... Again, I do not know, or care to know the reasons why these young men decided to leave early, but, I know that they are happy with their decisions.

Coach Spurrier encourages the boys to do what is right for them. That is always a great thing to know that your coach has your back! But it's like we are always stuck just that 1 step away from getting over with our amazingly talented position players, who has came in and made a name for themselves leave that 1 year early!

I know every school goes through this, and some deal with it better than others, and over the years, it has been proven that our team has handled the missing pieces very well... But it still begs the question: What if that missing piece was there? I can hear some of you know... "But what if they came back and get injured?" Well, what if they didn't get injured? What if, statistically speaking, that last year could have been their best, and helped their draft stock a little bit more?

But with all that said, this is what I believe... I believe that we will always be on the door step, as long as we have to re-up on the big names... With Victor and Jadeveon making the decision to leave early, and whoever else, it just makes it hard to actually find someone who wants to actually make it over the hump... This is my opinion, and I know some of yall will disagree with me, and some may, I don't care... this is what I feel is going to happen, until I am proven wrong... however they decide, May the Good Lord bless each and every one of those young men, and their families in the future. Forever Gamecocks!!!

Thats all... (sorry for being so long winded)

Thoughts?

Default Re: Something I realized

1. We are not perennially "on the doorstep." We've been on the doorstep for 2 or 3 years. The best and most consistent teams are in THAT position a hell of a lot more than they are winning championships. I'll use LSU as an example. Consistently a very good team, has won a championship recently but has been "on the doorstep" many more years than not. Or you could look at the other 10-15 teams that have had very good teams and not managed to win everything.

2. We've been putting ourselves in position to do great things. Championship runs require a lot of luck, no matter who you are. As long as we're looking at LSU, think about 2007 - they lost to Arky AND freakin Kentucky, and almost all of their games were very close...but it just worked out for them.

Things could have worked out for us and didn't, and some fans are going to whine about that. I think Alabama's success has spoiled every other fanbase into expecting a championship every year. lol.

Just remember that without players that are guaranteed 3 and out type players, there's no way we'll ever win on the big stage. Cam, Trent, Mark Ingram, Julio, Manziel etc types are going to be your backbone and very rarely will you have someone that will stay 4 years (waiting for "but tebow!").

I understand what you are getting at but this is really "hindsight is 20/20" to a tee. I disagree with your point on Ace Sanders being the difference in 10-2 and 12-0. Our issues early on were linebackers and punting/kicking resulting in very bad field position. The linebackers improved significantly as the season wore on and they gained game experience. Linebacker attrition from 2010/2011 and not redshirting some of our 2009 guys hurt. Still a good season to build on with a young group of guys.

61 juniors declared for the draft last year.

Every good team has players leave early for the draft. It happens when you have good players.

I used to hate it. But after seeing what happened to Lattimore and no Arron Murray. I can't fault anyone for leaving early if they have the chance.

You have a different perspective.
The hump for years was a winning season. Getting to a bowl was icing on the cake. Up until 2010, our best team went 8-4 (1987), our best record ever was 10-2 (1984) and we had a good team that went 9-3 in '01. Those 3 were the only teams I can remember that finished in the Top 25.

Now we've jumped from having bowl eligible teams finishing outside the Top 25, to double-digit-win teams finishing in the Top 10.

So either the "hump" has moved, or there's multiple "humps".

Totally agree and I still hate it.

While I applaud any of these guys wanting to go make some $$, it will never sit right with me the way all of this goes down. CFB, and especially the SEC is now the minor leagues for the NFL. And the entire sports media has over-hyped this whole thing to where guys leaving early is portrayed as some kind of honor or status milestone to be desired.

Wish somehow the NCAA and CFB could dam some of this up and keep the NFL from picking their pockets.

I think by having a reputation of being a "springboard" into the NFL helps recruiting. It's far better to have marquee players for 2 or 3 seasons than to not have them at all.

I think that the ncaa should stop being the "minor leagues" for the NFL. Let's face it, many athletes think of college as a stepping stone to the pros and not as a great opportunity to get an education. A system like baseball has in place would separate those who only want to play football from those who want to be a student/athlete.

I agree that we are now facing a "new" hump having now cleared the 7-8 win hump. I can't fault a player for leaving early now. The NFL career is so short for most of these kids. Often time staying one more year in college means playing one less year in the NFL due to wear and tear on the body. That's a lot of money being left on the table. If the NCAA can figure out a way to get some of the billions being made on college football to the players, you might see some stick around. But being familiar with player's personal financial situations like a Vic Hampton, I can't fault him for leaving. And I do think it is wrong that billions are being made on college football and nothing goes to the players.

In theory I get what the OP is stating. We have for the past few years, lost a key player or two that could have stayed and helped the program even more. Who knows what would have really happened. Also like others, it's true that people leave early everywhere and many here have a false senese of security that just because we have back ups, we have depth. There is a difference. Depth to me is people that can come in play 1 and contribute with less or zero learning curve. Elite programs have that in almost every position. We don't just yet. Until we do, these guys leaving early will continue to leave more of a void than had they stayed. Ace probably wouldn't have been the difference in 2 wins but he would have contributed much more in the return game than anyone on this team and helped in the WR corps.

Yes it is. Things have changed. I remember the days when CFB was a casual afternoon event...with a few exceptions. Then it got big....real big. And I also remember a time when very few if any 3rd yr players left early. They all played for 4 yrs.

We have to embrace change....especially if there's money being waved around. CFB is a business....big business. Time to get serious about revising how these guys are compensated.

And you are absolutely right about the life span of an NFL guy...gotta make the money while you can.

Murray came back and now that is likely to cost him a great deal in draft stock and $$. These guys are just kids and most of them are not playing college ball because that has always been their dream ( and then get a real job), but they are playing college ball JUST to try and make it to the pro level and get paid. So you can't really blame them to leave as soon as they are able to make the bucks.

Exactly! Most All great players are going to leave after 3 years! Its just the way it is.

You just have to get more of those great players in recruiting. You think Bama, UF, and LSU won Nat championships with a bunch of 4 and 5 year guys? Hell no.

You just gotta keep recruiting great players that will dominate in their 3 years

This is why we all want to see more blow outs. So we can get the 2nd and 3rd string more playing time. More 4/5 stars will want to come here if they don't have to wait a year to get meaningful PT.

Ever body has to deal with the early jump so its just a shorter term. Next hump IMO is no more 'brain fade', total focus the entire season - that's what it takes for next level. I'm not satisfied at all with a 2 outta 3 Oct road trip. We got the goods, keep em on track. If one cant perform, somebody's waiting for the chance. Athens was a tough loss (its tough to win 4 in a row against any SEC team) but that other orange team loss was hard to swallow.

You can't say we would go 11-1 if those players stayed. Especially Ace. We still lose to UT with Ace. 10-2 either way. We may have beaten LSU last year if Alshon had stayed, but why the heck would he? He's broken an NFL team's receiving record TWICE already this season.

Stop worrying about who we lost and think about all the talent coming back, you disrespect an entire team to say that one person would make the difference, that one person would make the team or left a void so big we could not overcome it. Every team has to deal with early entries and injuries it is the nature of the beast so crying over them is a practice in futility! How about look at the team with the most players coming back in the country, a team that did great things and a large majority will be back to chase the SEC and National title next year with some really good recruits added to the mix as well as RS FR, quit the crying and start sticking your chest out crowing about the great team we have coming back.
