Default Florida Gator alum moving to Columbia (Have some questions for the locals)

Greeting y'all! I'm Paul and I accepted a job offer in Columbia, SC. I start in January. I just wanted to ask if anyone here is needing a roommates and if not then where are some good/safe places to live and what are some resources I could use to find roommates. I prefer to live with USC students or grads so I have something in common with them.

Thanks!

Hey Paul! I'm originally from Tampa but moved to Columbia when I was really young. I graduated from USC in May. Congrats on the job! I'm currently on the hunt too and looking to move whenever I find one. I'm currently in the Forest Acres section of town. (About 10 minutes from downtown) But I've lived downtown the past four years when I was in school. What area will you be working in?

Columbia is a cool place, I hope you like it here. Feel free to ask any questions about the area, we have a bunch of locals who I'm sure could answer them for you.

Thanks! In a clinic nears Williams-Brice. I have read and heard about the dangerous parts of Columbia but I want to hear from locals on here how dangerous it really is. I'm disappointed to hear that it rarely snows up there. I was hoping I would get to see snow being from Florida. Thanks for the help!

Well, I've been a cop here a long time and military as well. There are a lot of great places. But truth is, most people that know better live in Lexington County. Way cheaper taxes. Less crime, etc. in Richland County, there are a lot of good places, but they are equaled by how many dangerous places there are. Someone mentioned Forest Acres. Good area. Cops are pricks there, so never ever speed through there. But a lot of lakes in that area. I live on Lake Carrie right outside Forrest Acres. Nice enough. Send me a PM, I'll tell ya where NOT to go.

You don't really have to go that far to see snow man. It is snowing like a bitch in the NC mountains as I type this, bout 3 hours away, straight up 26.

I think that the West Columbia/Cayce area is very nice and anywhere around Lake Murray is good. It depends on where you work. If your job is downtown it's hard to beat Cayce or West Columbia.

If you want to stay downtown then Shandon, behind the VA Hospital/Med School, Cayce, and Forest Acres are nice areas.

If you don't mind commuting then I'd recommend Chapin and Lexington. I just moved to Chapin, and it is the most peaceful place I've ever lived after living in Columbia all my life. I work in downtown Columbia and the commute does get old sometimes though.

Avoid the Decker Blvd area, most of southeast Columbia past I-77, most of Two Notch, North Main St, Old Shandon/MLK Park.

Hi Paul. I'm in central Brevard in Indian River City between Titusville and Cocoa. Glad that you will be able to experience Columbia. There is better BBQ there than here. MUCH better. Go hit up this buffet: http://littlepigs.biz/. Lots of lake and river fun. Couple of hours to the beach or the mountains. Doing either is like an easy drive to Orlando from Palm Bay. The culture is different and may take a while to appreciate.

While all the outlying areas being mentioned are nice, (Chapin, Lexington, etc) they are mostly families with a few scattered apartments. If you want to be near the younger folk most of them are in the downtown area. Try Cayce, West Columbia, Rosewood and Shandon if you want to have a neighborhood feel but still be close to the action. Or if you want to be IN it, try the apartments in the Vista.

A friend of mine used to live in Granby Crossing just over the river in Cayce. That complex is built on the grounds of a long closed brick works, and what is interesting is the brick kilns are still there. That complex is only about 2 1/2 miles from Williams Brice and right over the river (walking distance) from the baseball park.

It might not be a bad idea for someone back home in Columbia to get your address and send you an apartment guide. Gentlemen?

Don't listen to the haters -> crime is not that bad here, man. Shandon, Forest Acres, Rosewood, (parts of) Elmwood are pretty much safe. You will def see some strange sights/peeps on the other side of the river, but they are what they are.

Ill be honest, i lived in Cola my entire life, but went to school in Greenville and have lived up here for about eight years. Because I kinda live in both places, I follow the headlines in both places, it seems like the Crime is worse in Greenville right now than it is in Columbia. We have had several violence issues in greenville it seems like every week the last year or so. Ive never had any problem in Columbia, and ive been places in the past I shouldnt have.

Yep. Cola got a bad rep and people ran with it. Crime really isn't that bad here.

There's pockets around the city where the riff-raff congregate. Down near the end of Gervais (heading East, before you can fork on to Trenholm), for example, there's a neighborhood of high value homes, with (literally) a single street dividing them from a ghetto (House St area, and whatever they call Gonzales Gardens now, over near Providence Hospital). I refer to the area between South Kilbourne and S. Beltline as 'Little Compton'. Best thing the city has done in recent years is raze that housing project at the end of Rosewood (I think it's called Rosewood Hills now).

Welcome to Columbia.

First off, having lived here my whole life, I can say the worst part of Columbia is the northern part of the city (North Main, Eau Claire, etc.). Stay away from there. Most have mentioned the nicer parts of the city, and there are some really nice parts. Just have to know where to look.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM. There's tons of stuff I could tell you about Columbia.

I got to throw my .02 in for Northeast Columbia. Great, booming area with not much crime. As for the people saying lexington, I have to disagree. That part of the "city" is mainly meth labs and mouth breathers.
