About 12 years ago, I had the flu. I could barely move I was so sure from the muscle aches, but then I was restless because I was in the bed. Didn't help that I couldn't keep anything down for about 3 days. I was miserable.

1964 (10 years old) I got Rheumatic Fever. I was misdiagnosed at first
by a doctor who thought I had a kidney infection, and the medicine he
gave me had no effect on my early symptoms. Woke up one morning with
both my legs in so much pain, it hurt when I would even touch the floor
(let alone stand or put any weight on them) was EXTREMELY sick on my
stomach and had a terrible headache. ... My mom called my regular doctor
who had been out of town for several days, and when he saw me in his
office, he told my parents to get me to the hospital QUICK ! .... was there
for a week doing several test, and they told me after a few days I had
Rheumatic Fever. I had to stay in bed the entire summer, only form of
exercise I got was going to and from the bathroom, and to walk around
the house once a day. The extreme pain in the feet and legs, nausea, and
headaches subsided after 3-4 days in the hospital, but for most of the
summer I was overly sensitive to anything that touched my skin, I tired
after short walks, and I was left with a heart murmur and a "fluttering"
of the heart that is still there to some extent even today.

Appendicitis: but what had actually happened when they got in there was that my appendix had started to rot out and gangrene had spread to the walls of my intestine. It required an extra 4 days recovery time, and a couple extra rounds of antibiotics.

Default Re: The Worst You've Ever Been Sick

I've had food poisoning three different times. It's the worst I've ever felt. Thankfully it lasts less than a day with the worst systems about 12 hours. But man does it suck!

As others have said, it comes out of both ends. So I'll share each of the stories because they are somewhat memorable.

First time was in Phoenix. I was driving from SC to California in May 2001 as I was moving across country. Late one night in Phoenix, got the chills really bad. Then I got up and had it coming out of both ends. This lasted all night. Fortunately, I was better the next morning after sleeping and finished the drive to California.

On my birthday a few years ago, went to the Red Lobster. Spent my entire birthday night over and on the toilet.

One day in 2010, I wasn't feeling well at work. Told my boss I was feeling sick and needed to go home. I got in my car and was driving home. As I got on the freeway I puked all over my car. I finally got home, crawled into bed, and didn't move for hours (except for getting up and vomiting of course).

I HATE food poisoning. It's the worst I've ever felt!

I've been very fortunate to never have any really bad illnesses. However when I was around 9 or 10, I did have a fever that lasted for a week or so. My mom dosed me with everything from Tylenol to Nyquil to cowbell, but it just would not break. Anyways it was at this time that I discovered something very peculiar about me and fevers. When I get one in the 102+ range, I begin to hallucinate. I remember watching a guy on TV singing, and I could see the music while he was singing it. It was some pretty far out stuff.

My junior year in college I went back with my girlfriend to Houston to visit her family. We were around her niece who was about two at the time. She apparently had some kind of sickness and she passed it off to us. The day after we got home I woke up and had it coming out of both ends, and my girlfriend couldn't keep from throwing up. It was some nasty virus that laid me up for a couple of days but luckily for me that is about the worst I can recall.

Also, having strep throat is a real bitch... especially when it is hard to swallow your own saliva. I had to take some throat numbing medicine to even eat or drink and be in minimal pain.

I had food poisoning after eating a 'Spider Roll' from the Micato on Two Notch road in 2001... Definitely a day I'd like to forget! Spent about 20 hours calling Europe to ask Ralph for a Buick! Lol

Longest I was down was from an injury to my right hip/piriformis muscle in 2006. I literally could not sit or stand without searing pain from hip to toe. My mom calls an ambulance because I cannot tolerate the 20 minute ride to KCMC. My MD admits me for 9 days and when I get home I'm no better. Racked up 12K in bills (at the only job I've had in healthcare where I had no benefits!). 3 wks later I'd rehabbed myself back to work.

Oh also the virus I caught on our cruise in late 2011. It was going around the ship and I didn't catch it till the last day. I puked the whole night through before we de-boarded. You have to go into your holding spot and out of your room about an hour before they actually let you off the ship. I couldn't stop puking and they put me us in the theater with about 400 other people. The kicker is all the bathrooms were closed because they had already began cleaning them for the next sail in a couple hours. I had to sit in a corner where no one could see me and puke into a bag, run through customs when they called our number, grab my bag, run outside and puke again. Then stop every couple miles the whole way back from Tampa to Columbia.

Then I was completely fine once I got home. -__-

I had an appendectomy. Worst stomach pains I've ever had. The second worse was when I had colitis. Was shitting straight blood for a day, it was tons of fun.

Also my girlfriend had to have her tonsils taken out at age 24. She's tough, broke her collarbone and two ribs at the same time and she still said it's the worst pain she's every felt. And by the expressions on her face while I was taking care of her, I believe her 100%.

Babies/toddlers can spread some of the worst stuff around. God help you if they go to a daycare and something gets introduced there. Learned that real quick with the nieces.

I woke up one Sunday morning and felt fine but by that evening I was feeling really bad so I went to the local emergency room. They said I had bronchitis and were admitting me overnight for oxygen and antibiotics. The following morning I was told I had a viral Infection. Then all hell broke loose. Lungs filled up with fluid and developed pneumonia, liver, kidney and thyroid stopped functioning normally and pancreas could not make enough insulation. Spent 9 days in hospital, 15 days in bed, missed another 6 weeks of work and was on several meds including insulin for 7 months. Nine doctors, including two infectious disease specialists never did identify the virus nor where it came from, they just treated the symptoms.

The good news was the hospital billed me $17,000 +/- (after insurance) but when I contacted them and requested an itemized bill, they reduced it by $1,100.00 and sent me a corrected bill $3,625.00. After debating them for 3 weeks about their math ($17,000-$1,100=$3,625.00) I paid the bill.

Default Re: The Worst You've Ever Been Sick

10-29-2013 I had outpatient surgery for septoplasty (to fix my broken nose that occurred back in 1993), uvulectomy with turbinate’s reduction. I am 34 years old and have been lucky up until now and never had any kind of surgery before. According to my Dr the surgery went great and lasted about 1.5 hours. I woke up in recovery and was ready to go home right then. I ended up going up about three hours later.

No one told me that when you have a septoplasty surgery that your nose will be completely packed and you will be a mouth breather for a around a week. It’s really hard to swallow anything (including pain pills when your is completely useless). Since I couldn’t take anything by mouth, had to be admitted to the hospital later that night and ended up staying a week until finally getting to go home that Friday.

The following Monday, the surgeon took out the packing and I was finally able to breath out my nose. I started getting better and lasted about three weeks until my nose started pouring blood while I was at work for some odd reason and I had to go back to the ER. Luckily, my surgeon was in the same hospital and rush down to stop the bleeding. Once again, the Dr packed my nose for three days and when he took the packing out, not even two hours later, the bleeding started again. I ended up back in the Dr office and he finally cauterize my nose in 7 places.(pain was intense). I had to have my nose packed again just to be safe since it was on a Friday and to make it until the weekend was over. That Monday, the Dr took the packing out 11-19-2012 and Thank God I have been doing better ever since. I still can’t blow my nose like I want but I can breathe out of it.

I am just praying that I am over the worst part. The surgeon said who has been doing these procedures for over 20 years now said that post op bleeding like mine is seen in 1 out of every 267 patients and I was the lucky one. I was tested for bleeding disorders and was told everything is normally so not really sure why all this happened to me. I was not able to enjoy my son’s first Halloween or thanksgiving due to being laid up in the bed or hospital.
On the positive side, I no longer have to use a Cpap machine and can sleep all night with any apnea episodes.

Before the surgery I would stop breathing over 100 times in one hour. My wife said she can’t’ remember a time that I slept that good before the surgery. I am an ex-smoker and sleep apnea has been rough on me the last 5 years. I told my wife that all I want for Christmas is to have no more bleeding and to 100% healed up. (Haven’t been able to pick up my son in 6 weeks and have three more weeks to go before the Dr said I can give it a try).

Totally amount of Dr/Medical bills $56,433

Luckily I have primary and secondary insurance in which all I owe as of today is $1,765.00.

I had pneumonia when I was in elementary school. Laid up in bed for weeks and couldn't hold anything solid down. I ate a lot of Popsicles.

The two kidney stones I've had haven't really been much fun either. I'm only 24 so I probably have a lot more of those to look forward to.

Default Re: The Worst You've Ever Been Sick

Appendicitis. I was in pain all day before my mom decided to take me to the hospital. I went into surgery right away. I remember that the pain was so bad that while they prepped me for surgery, I didn't notice any of the shots, IVs, ect. Add to the fact that I was 10. I was in the hospital for a full week after the surgery and I was on homebound recovery for another week.

Other than a few nasty day long hangovers, I've had nothing nothing that can compare.
