Default the defense vs wisconsin inside the numbers

wisconsin had 223 yards in the first half including td drives of 71 and 75 yards their last two possessions. opening up the 2nd half they have runs of 5, 14, and 32 yards to get to our 13 yard line, but this was the turning point in the game for the defense. the defense holds, ending with a sack by chaz sutton on 3rd and 7 that makes them settle for a field goal.
our next drive connor loses a fumble and they start their next drive at our 31. there was a critical holding penalty mixed in with an offsides on quarles, ultimately we ended up stopping a james white run on 3rd and 4 to force a fg attempt that they miss.

for comparison the two td drives and the 3 opening plays of the 2nd half.
25 plays 197 yards 7.88 avg
rest of the game (afterwards)
32 plays 137 yards 4.28 avg

the difference was we made the plays to get off the field when our backs were against the wall. gordon/white in the 2nd half (carries inside our 40 yard line) 7 carries 19 yards, zero first downs. the other thing we did for the entire game is prevent those runs by gordon and white when they got to the 2nd level from being long td runs. we certainly can be critical of the lb's and db's at times in this game, but ultimately they prevented the big play.

Agreed, however I like the more aggressive approach to LBing you see in a team like Michigan State.

What? Are you saying their two TD drives in the first half and first three plays of the second half were 25 plays for 197 yards and the rest of the game they had 32 plays for 137 yards? I hope I'm just not understanding, because that's not accurate. Wisconsin ran a total of 69 plays for 410 yards, but the numbers you posted only show 57 plays for 334 yards. I'm so confused.

Wisconsin didnt punt! A few young players like Skai and TJ play.
ed well but we HAVE to replace a certain LB who is seriously awful. At times, we seemed to be playing with 10 men on D...thank God Clowney is akin to having 2 players.
We need big improvement on D for next year. Not saying the effort by 10 players wasnt outstanding but we knew what slow Wusconsin was gonna do and they still ran all over us. Whammy getting better at adjustments, too.

Which LB is awful? Hope you're not talking about Golightly, because he is probably the most improved player on defense throughout the year. He is also 2nd team all-SEC.

Golightly didn't play in the first half so I doubt that's who he means.

The defense ranked 2nd in the SEC. When are people like you going to demand the offense be as good as our defense has been? Hell some wanted Ward fired before the first half ended although the offense had only scored 13 points.

Thanks to 3 incredible catches by our receivers the offense scored enough to win, but by no means did the offense carry the game. Those 3 catches have caused such elation that many esteem SOS's great offensive mind; nothing is further from the truth.

I'm really sick of people maligning our defense while giving SOS a pass. When the offense catches up to the defense we'll probably be playing in the NCG. Until then keep expecting losses like the UCheat game.

Against a power running team like Wisconsin, our smaller LBs struggled... and really, that was somewhat expected.

Ward did a great job adjusting at halftime (as usual)

All of our guys were getting blocked out of the play over and over because we were letting them do it. A few times we rushed from the corners, we got pounded up the middle because we had no one to tackle their RB cruising down field. I don't think we ever got penetration up the middle and our LBs were just getting blocked by pulling guards, etc.

We needed to try and send a speed guy up the middle and try and disrupt. And we used to move Jadeveon around....we could have lined him up as a speed rusher in the middle somewhere...3 DEs. We had an advantage in speed and quickness, but didn't use it that well.

I don't disagree with what you've been saying, but you don't feel like you're taking it to an extreme by bashing the offense on almost every opportunity when discussing the defense? It kinda seems like this:

I remember one distinct play where we did that and they went outside for a big gain. I think in the end the defense did a great job. Only 3 points in the second half.

Not an expert but not sure about Ward. This defense has at least 3 nfl players on it with one of them possibly being the number one pic. Really wasn't an impressive defense all year. Why I point to Ward is that when we had Johnson as our dc and we had problems in the secondary, I remember Spurrier having to intervene and tell the defensive coaches to simplify the defense. Spurrier reiterated this philosophy when promoting Ward to dc and had to reiterate it again this season. This makes me think that it is Ward's schemes that Spurrier had to intervene on. Also the recruiting deficits we have now are all on defense; corner and defensive end this year with lb being the deficit we had to deal with last year. Just not sure about how good of dc Ward is. JMHO.

The offense hasn't been good under SOS. This year it ranked 7th in the SEC. People have no problem firing Ward or in the past Johnson, but SOS gets a pass. I don't understand it. As long as people keep attacking the defense I'm going to continue to point out the reality.

We had to replace our entire 2 deep at LB. We finished #18 in total defense with only Bama and UF from the SEC ahead of us. Ward is a great DC, and the most valuable asset he has is that the players love to play for him.

How did you miss you're in a thread where people are complaining about our defense which is why I'm defending them. If you don't like it I really don't give two shits.
