Default MLB to Columbia if Bull St. is bought?

So does anybody actually think that if the Bull Street property is bought that it will be used for an MILB expatiation team for SC? Sounds great, but in all likelihood?

Columbia's too small to support an MLB team. I've only heard rumors about a minor league team.

I would say doubt it...not with Atlanta that close and with Charlotte. However, a minor league team would be great. Would love to see the Bombers again.

Hopefully the City gets behind it and our new AD knows that pro ball will not pull from USC

Not sure how it fully works, but if a it were a Major League team (which I doubt), wouldn't Columbia have to pay some kind of territorial fee to the Braves?
Or is Columbia far enough that they'd get out of that?

I've heard minor league team as well but either way I would love it. But certain places in the area need to go. Starting with that " Sketch " gas station El Cheapo or whatever it is.

No to a major league team. Columbia is a very small market. There are many cities that are bigger and have bigger tv markets. Minor league, yes.

Charlotte would march on Columbia if Cola got an MLB team over it.

Why on earth should my tax dollars go to fund a minor league stadium when Columbia has proven that they won't support a minor league team?

That place has been there forever! It would be pretty neat to have some really nice facility on those grounds right as you come into Cola. instead of creepy deserted buildings. Are none of those buildings on the Historic Register, though?

The Babcock building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

I'm not sure where the OP heard that a major league team could come to Columbia. That wouldn't make any sense. Minor league would make sense though. They just need to clean up that part of town a little.

I'm sure there's no way a major league team is being considered, but with that said, I've always said that if there were ever a major league team in South Carolina, with all of the college baseball fans and baseball fans in general in SC combined, I believe a team would thrive here.
As a fan of a team that's showing almost no signs of improvement for the future, I'd be willing to make the switch. South Carolina has always loved its baseball. Capital City Stadium does well in attendance considering its condition and location.

Make a new stadium in a better location and there's no doubt that a minor league team would do very well in Columbia.

Why does everyone think Columbia will support baseball? It has been proven that we won't. With Lake Murray right there and the beach 2 hours away people just don't really stay in Columbia during the summer.

Did you ever go to a Columbia Inferno game? Consistently had very good attendance. If we can support a hockey team, then we sure as hell can support a baseball team. It's not the fan support that's been the issue, it's the unwillingness by the city to build a decent stadium.

The National Register of Historic Places affords buildings zero protection. It's only recognition. Local municipal ordinance, usually in the form of zoning is the only protection afforded most historic buildings (unless given national landmark status). One benefit of being on the National Register is that it makes certain tax incentives for development possible. This is one reason why Bob Hughes purchased the property (tax-credits available for the development). If done right, this development has the opportunity to bring a largely vacant and majorly underutilized piece of property in the heart of downtown back to life. It could have a very positive impact on the city.

That being said, I don't think Columbia could support a professional team. Just my opinion.

The Inferno failed as well. Why should the city build a stadium? Any revenue that it would bring in is just cannibalized from other places in the city. People do not travel for minor league games.
