Default North Carolina Skiing

I'm looking to take a long weekend trip to North Carolina to Snowboard and ski with the wife and I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions. I would like to stay on the mountain to keep from having to drive too much while I'm there.

Any suggestions would be awesome! Thanks in advance!

Sugar usually has the best snow and grooming. Conditions are so unpredictable that it may be your best bet.

Sugar has the access road that is best. No uphill, treacherous climbs. Largest mountain this side of the Mississippi except for Snowshoe. They have done tons of upgrades over the past 10 years or so.

Headed to Snowshoe on Monday. Nothing in NC can compare and worth the drive.

Beech and Sugar are the best in NC. But if you're going on the weekend, be prepared for long lines.

I prefer Winterplace in WVA....about the same drive as Beech and Sugar for me and not as crowded and right off the interstate. Of course Snowski is the best around here, but it's a haul.

The road to Snowshoe is a twisting, uphill, dark one. Great skiing though. Personally, I like Canaan Valley in WV. Absolutely beautiful.

Beech has gone downhill. Their new mgt has run that place into the ground. Grooming sucks their, facilities are really looking bad

Crowds on weekends are horrible. Go during the week if you can. way cheaper and next to no lift lines.

Sugar and Beech are close enough to each other to go to one on one day and the other on another day. There are some places on Tynecastle hwy that you can rent from, which is my suggestion if you are going to ski more than one day. Here is one.

I used to rent from alpine - until I went ahead and bought a snowboard. I like their policy of not charging you the day you pick it up or bring it back. Of course, you have to pick it up after like 3pm but I believe you have until they close the day your bring it back. Side note - that's the one in Greenville.

The only bad thing about renting from an offsite location is that if you have a problem with the rental, you have to leave the mountain and go to that location to have it fixed

Those guys are pretty cool from what I remember in Banner Elk. I rent from there when I go, and it's right on the way back to the house I stay in when up there.

I love the little corner bar downtown. They used to have Tuesday sushi night.

Go west young man....

Do you know why some things are more expensive?

Because they're worth it.

Yeah, the only time I've ever skied on the east coast, it was when I was 5, and lived in Pittsburgh. Parents took me to some place in West Virginia, ever since then haven't looked back. Whistler is my fave, Jackson Hole and Vail aren't bad.

I remember staying in Asheville and going skiing nearby but can't remember the name of the place. It's something everyone should try, not something Id do again but defiantly worth the try.

If you're into all mountain carving then Sugar or Beech are the ones. As said before, the weekends are very crowded between 1 and 3 PM and the slopes are torn up by 3:30 until they are groomed again for the night sessions. If you want terrain parks, then AppSki isn't a bad alternative if that's all you do. It's not great for long runs though. If you stay in Boone, you can go to any of the three within 35-45 mins. I'd try vrbo.com if you want to stay on the slopes or close by.
