Default Recruitment of 2016 offensive line

I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on a recent article published on Gamecockcentral entitled 16 for 16. It broke down 16 guys that were thought to be more likely to commit to the Gamecocks for the 2016 class and broke it down by position. Every position seems ok except at the offensive lineman position. I'm not trying to get caught up in the star rating of these guys but we have 2 (2*) and 2 JUCO guys here.

1. Branton Autry (JUCO)
2. Akeem Cooperwood (JUCO)
3. Pete Leota
4. Jakori Savage

I understand the need for JUCO guys considering that we're already thin in this area and will be especially thin after Matilus, Sport, and Shell graduate this year. I just look at the offer list that Leota and Savage have and it's not that impressive. Do you think the coaches believe they have some unhidden talent or is the best that we can do?

Why does it seem like we are always playing catchup?? How hard is it to balance recruiting across all position groups?!??? Answer: not hard, it just takes common sense and some planning.

Great recruiting requires hard work and persistent diligence to be consistent each year...Spurrier and Spurrier Jr are not going to work hard at recruiting on a consistent basis...Thats irrefutable history....Mangus, Elliot and Ward can't do it all alone...I don't understand why Spurrier doesn't hire a very competent recruiting enthusiast to run the talent program administratively...Coordinate with trusted scouts outside the program to get an earlier jump on identifying the better talents....Other schools have larger recruiting staffs and budgets than ours...We have the money and resources...We just don't have the leadership at the top that understands the urgency of recruiting...

I get that Spurrier isn't a workaholic like Saban, but is what you're saying really true or speculative? How do you know this?

Don't believe it just ask him! We are still using a 90s recruiting philosophy well into the new millenium.....Spurrier seems to believe its all about him..

No one appreciates what SOS has done for our program more than me....But he needs to upgrade our recruiting program and efforts...He needs to do it now...If not, he will leave our program like he found it...Who the heck wants that

I just don't know one way or another. I guess the kids we are involved with this year aren't being heavily pursued by other schools.

But Elliott has recruited very well on paper since he came here. So far I haven't seen any line he has coached play up to their stars.

Just saying it may not matter that much, apparently there is a ceiling with the current staff and system that precludes us from having the kind of offensive line that can allow us to run the ball consistently.

But honestly it seems like offensive line recruiting has been trending down the past few years, with last year's defections really showcasing it.

That must be why they pay them OL assistant coaches so little, it's easy to recruit LT's and NFL type OL..... LMAO Nothing to convincing a teenager to do something, everyone knows how easily influenced kids are, making them make the biggest decision in there short lives is easy....
And SOS gets top 20 classes not even trying and a top 5 is lucky, imagine if he tried, so the assumption and speculation are that we would have a much better team "if" SOS tried harder.... how does anyone know this?

He can't leave our program like he found it, we had never won $hit before SOS... I can remember a time when I struggled to find a GAMECOCK in the NFL, we use to hope to go to a bowl game, we used to hope we could win a bowl game, we use to dream of winning the EAST...Now we dream of the SEC title and a National title with realistic expectations that it could happen, so we can never go back to a team with a hand full of bowl wins, a team way behind in the facilities race, a team that struggled with the orange crush at the end of the year for a decade and if he is getting top 15-20 talent year in and year out with a 90's recruiting philosophy then you reckon the other 106 schools must be stuck in the 50's..... Spurrier has said you can't kill yourself trying to make a kid play for you, they have to want to play for you from the beginning and then you have to sale them to keep them! Saban was not the king of recruiting at mich st, but it is a ton easier to recruit at loseu and bama based on tradition, size of stadium, facilities, boosters fattening pockets.....

Yes SOS is a great coach and all that....we all love him to death and hope he never leaves. But we can all agree we wish he put more time into recruiting because that would help us out in the long run.

You know it's just an impression, but it sure seems hard to recruit offensive linemen if you aren't an elite program, and one that has had recent success.

Or you are Stanford and can sell what that degree can really do for you.

In a lot of ways it seems like the position that is hardest to recruit. At lest for us, seems like offensive linemen who are going to be big time are the rarest thing coming out of our high schools.

Default Re: Recruitment of 2016 offensive line

Let's recap where the top in-state guys have gone in recent years....

2010 - AJ Cann, USC
2011 - Brandon Shell, USC
2012 - no real stand-outs, closest thing was Mason Zandi, who had a big upside - USC
2013 - DJ Park, USC
2014 - Donnell Stanley, USC
2015 - Zach Bailey, USC

All of those guys are still on campus except for Cann. All were 4 stars except for Zandi. But we have a terrible line and can't recruit players?? It sounds like we are kicking rear end in-state, but every year is not going to produce great in-state linemen.

We return three starters. We have three other players that have started on the O line - at two different positions. Okay, so one may not be eligible this year - the ruling has not come in on Ashley Helms' hardship waiver. But that is still an impressive nucleus. Then consider this: we have two projected starters - Zandi and Stanley - that are not in that group of six. Assuming that Zandi can hold off DJ Park, that is, who was the OL MVP of the spring. That leaves two very promising players - 4 star Brock Stadnik and RS Freshman Malik Young - on the outside looking in, unless someone gets hurt.

And then you add in a really nice 4 man recruiting class, including the aforementioned Bailey, who may have been the top overall prospect in the state. We have more depth, talent, and experience than we have had in years and years. Am I missing something? And isn't this May, when we don't even have an idea of who our recruits will be? And you guys are panicking over some guy making wild guesses on our class, when he does not know much more than you? You guys need to chill out a little.

This is the kind of offensive linemen Georgia seems to sign every year.

https://www.google.com/search?q=imag...w&ved=0CB0QsAQ

Obviously we don't know how he is going to adapt to college ball, but he looks more like an NFL player as a high schooler than our graduating seniors

The picture I was thinking of isn't even in that set. There is a picture of him at a camp or workout with a kid we signed or were recruiting from Georgia, and he totally dwarfed the guy we were trying to sign. It was like the difference between a Furman player and an SEC player.

Default Re: Recruitment of 2016 offensive line

Just looked for some and didn't find much.

I guess I should expect to get mocked, but my point is this kid is already NFL sized, he looks extremely solid.

No idea what his feet are like. He was a very highly recruited player nationally (including us but he wasn't really interested).

And while they are our guys, do you really think Stadnik, Knott, DJ Park, Zandi, Rogers, crap Matulis and Shell who are fifth year guys.

Do they really look like they have the same kind of build? Like I said no one will really know what he will be at the college level until he plays. But he has the size, muscle mass, and apparently some mobility.

I'd say the odds of him becoming a road grader and the kind of guy that is a first round pick in the NFL draft are very much above average.

Now I don't have much on Bailey. But it is hard for me to imagine he is put together as well.

But pretty much everyone Georgia signs is like Cleveland. Every year.

And that doesn't make a difference?

If I want to be able to run the ball against a top tier defense, an LSU or Alabama, this isn't the kind of kid I want five of on the line?

Our recruiting territory just kind of sucks on a consistent basis. We're having to pull kids out of Florida and GA to fill out our roster, and that's never going to be easy.
