Default Expectations this year

I hate to say it, but I have not been following basketball closely at all since the Devan Downey era, so I have a question for all the guys who are at this point. What are the expectations, or your expectations for our guys this year? I know it is Coach Martin's second year, and a lot is expected of him as a coach, so I was wondering what you guys think about this years team, our expectations, and how far can we go in the near future with Coach Martin at the helm?

We will be better than last year, but still not good. Year 3 will be the one where we'll start to really compete in conference. One recruiting class just can't change enough things when you're not bringing in a Calipari class. I think we'll win 5-7 SEC games.

Win more than we lose. Maybe be .500 in SEC play.

One would typically say that a team in Year #2 under a new coach would improve significantly.....not so sure we can say that about USC because there were so much turnover from last season's roster. The newcomers will make USC far more athletic and add length and size to what we've experienced going back to Horn, but there will be a lot of inexperience.

One thing I'm expecting is to see a substantial improvement all around from Carrera: he has really shown out during the Heathwood Hall Pro-Am, and has been the most impressive and consistent performer out of everyone. He will need to be watched to see that he's gotten his emotions into check better from last season, but IMO he's going to become a leader for us in '13-'14. Also like what I've heard/read about Williams working hard to improve on both sides of the floor and to be a better leader. Those two will be counted on a ton in the early season to keep the team focused until Ellington arrives.

I have also heard great things about Shaw and Johnson stepping up as leaders and distributors at the point position this offseason. I have no idea how many games we'll win this season, but I am very excited for the season to come...

If the schedule ever comes out, I'll make a prediction. Hard to say without knowing the non-conference schedule and who, other than UGA, we'll get twice in SEC play.

Honestly, I feel that the record may not be better than last year. There's NO WAY we'll have an easier non-conference schedule or conference schedule. I think the team will be better, you may just not see it in the record.

At the very least we will be more competitive and be better matched up against other teams. An NCAA bid in Martin's second season would be...I don't have the words.

Fact is until we see what these recruits are like, no one has any idea. Notice, Johnson, Thornwell, Henry, and Ringer--that's probably our future. But I remember being excited about some of Horn's recruiting classes too.....

I expect improvement over last year, that is about it. Doing some research on these guys, I can tell you that they have serious talent.Ringer and Henry are really solid low post guys. Notice is a scoring type PG. Mckie and Thornwell are natural scorerers. Most the new guys have 3 point range.

So is Notice a more athletic point guard? And by scoring, do you mean 20+ points per game, or around 10-15? I was wondering if any of the guys Martin has recruited have scoring abilities in the 20+ range at this point.

Notice is a better lakeem jackson. He will not play pt. And he is not a "scorer". He's a cutter/slasher who gets buckets from effort.

I expect the guard play to be MUCH improved.

When you have very solid guard play, you typically have a decent team.

Honestly, I think we overachieved last year. We seriously had a team of low CAA caliber athletes(with the exception of a few.) Guys who just weren't cut out for the SEC style of play. We have seen in Martin's style of recruiting that he just wants tough kids that aren't afraid to stick their nose in there. I don't think we will take a step back. I think we will take a very small step forward but again it will be a rough year where wins will come more based on fight than pure skill.

The only reason I would compare him to Jackson is that is best attribute is driving to the basket. That is what he does exceptionally well. But he is only 6'2 and I think a much better outside shooter, ball handler and finshier. I don't know how much he'll score a game. I don't see it being near twenty more like 10. He is not a prototypical point guard, but he can play point and be effective.

Not saying he will average +20, but Thornwell has the ability to drop 20+ any given game.

I don't really know what to expect for this year because it's hard to gauge with so many new players. I expect them to play better as a team and improve as the season goes on. If they completely buy into the defensive philosophy, I think the ceiling is to have about 7 conference wins, finish a game or 2 over .500 overall, and get an NIT bid. Given the last couple of years, I would be thrilled with playing in the NIT.

7 SEC wins based on more free throws and lay-ups being made .. Better guard play and more outside threat to take a little heat off the inside guys
