Default Florida Speed Trap Gone!

For any of you who have ever been caught in Florida on US 301 in the town a lot of us have come to know as Florida's toilet, the town of Waldo has eliminated the speed trap by abolishing it's police dept and handing the responsibilities over the the Sheriff's Dept.

The chief required the cops to write a minimum of 1 ticket per hour of their shifts on average, so it was not unusual to get nailed for doing 1 mile per hour over the speed limit.

Goodbye Waldo PD, and good ridance. Now if the same can be done with the other towns along 301 between I-10 and Waldo that fund their budgets ripping off travelers.

I saw 1 cop pull 3 people in Waldo none of them could have been doing 5 over. He came out put his lights on and pulled up beside the back car and motioned them over. Then preceded to do the same to the two in front. Finally pulling his car over in front of all of them. Never seen anything like it before.

You still have Starke and Ocala. 301 in that stretch is shitty to drive in. Even worse when you get in traffic when everyone from 100 miles around are all going to the 1 walmart. Also, FHP will make up for Waldo.

I don't miss South Florida much.

Was pulled over on 301 in Florida some 15 years ago. Well my friend was driving but it was my car.

Got patted down and they searched the car for drugs or whatever illegal for about 40 minutes. Finally the guy said "Well it seems like you guys are telling the truth". Found nothing but my buddy still got a speeding ticket.

Guess I got lucky driving through there a couple of years ago on my way to St Pete. Saw the police cruiser just waiting to nab somebody as I passed him. I may have been going 5 over the limit, but thankfully he didn't pull me over.

I used to go that way several times a year back when the stretch between Callahan and Starke was all two lane. The cops were so bad that I started staying on 95 and then 10 to Starke. But the cops have always been bad in Waldo.

It's in North Florida, and you pass through it on your way to a number of different destinations. And it's absolutely worse than Kershaw County, it was one of only two towns in the US designated a "speed trap" by AAA. The second one being Lawtey, just a few miles down the road (up the road? I can't remember.) It has six different speed limits in a span of just a few miles and drops very suddenly. The town makes nearly half its revenue off speeding tickets.

AAA puts up giant billboards driving in to the town warning drivers.

I honestly don't know what a real speed trap is, even though I've heard people use the phrase all my life. I think the answer is simple, really, and that's just don't speed if you don't want to risk getting a ticket.

This is a perfect example of what I meant in my previous post. While it may have been a pain in the neck to do it, Yancey never exceeded the speed limit, thus, he never got a speeding ticket.

AAA actually defines these areas and categorizes them in to "strict enforcement areas" vs "speed traps"

http://exchange.aaa.com/safety/roadway-safety/speeding/

"A strict enforcement area is where traffic laws are strictly enforced for safety reasons. No censure is implied, nor is it intended to be derogatory in any way. AAA’s purpose in designating such an area is simply to alert members and the traveling public. Examples:

Speeding citations issued routinely for speeds of less than 8 mph above the posted speed limit.
Higher-than-average number of citations.
An announcement by local authorities that an area has been targeted due to documented safety issues such as number of crashes or speeding problems.

A traffic trap is a location used to entrap unsuspecting motorists – especially strangers – or where strict enforcement practices are followed primarily for revenue generation, rather than improving safety. AAA’s purpose is to warn motorists of a potential abuse of enforcement powers and unjust abridgment of motorists’ rights. Examples:

Improperly timed traffic signals.
Sudden, unannounced reductions in posted speed limits.
Obscured or hidden signs.
Poorly marked school zones."

Waldo was one of two towns designated as a trap. I, like Yancey, never sped through the town and was never ticketed. But there were definite tactics like the ones above used to trick drivers. Even if you thought you weren't speeding, they could hide a sign and pull you anyway, or drop it quickly enough that you didn't have time to slow down.

I drove through there dozens of times and never had a problem. None the less. the speed does drop very quickly. If I remember right, they even had flashing lights on the 35 MPH sign in one area.

For better or worse it's never enforced, but here in Roseland NJ they have a great setup for one - 50 to 25 with the only warning to reduce speed 110 feet (yes, I paced it off) from the new speed limit sign (which as an added bonus is partly blocked by the arrows sign)

That picture needs to kept as evidence in case you get a ticket there. No way in hell that a speeding ticket should hold up in court. That's some BS right there.

My home town had a reduction from 55 to 35 without any warning. The town cops used to get speeders all the time in the 35 mph zone. Drivers were slowing down but before they got to the posted speed limit, the police would clock them and pull them over.

Of course after a lot of complaining in court, they posted one of those "reduce speed ahead signs". Of course it wasn't as extreme as the one in the picture above.

Yep, I knew a guy from Chicago that got pulled over going home. The cop looked at his drivers license and asked him where he was from.

He said "Chicago".

The cop wanted to know why his drivers license said Illinois.

Sounds simple enough, but it isn't that easy.

It's not abiding to speed limits per se, it is more of the confusion and constant changing of speed limits that makes it a "trap."

I drive this area all the time and I *still* have issues remembering what zone I am in because they constantly change in a short span.

65..........55....45.35..45..35......55....45....6 5.....45.35.

That is what my main gripe is. It is way too confusing and "trolling" the drivers passing through the area through Waldo-Starke-Lawtey.

Thank you to everyone who educated me, and I mean that sincerely. I understand how people might feel like some areas might be set up to cause people to speed, even if that person typically obeys the posted limits. I either have simply not paid attention or I have been very lucky never to have encountered situations like some of the ones described here.
