If there is a "power of prayer", why do prayers not get answered, if you are praying for something rather than a conversation (as Spurt suggests)? Is it because not enough people prayed, or the right person prayed? Bringing the notion that certain people have more influence to get results...

There are certainly examples of prayers being fulfilled, but why don't they get fulfilled? Is it because it just isn't the "right time?"

I don't know the answer to this. Just something to take on faith?

I recognize that is not an answer we can know definitively, but I believe it is worth contemplating.
Coincidentally, someone I know recently said something along the lines of "people need to quit being selfish and praying for yourself" and that God doesn't need you to pray for something to be able to do it.

My thought was, isn't it even MORE selfish to expect God to bless you with what you want without you even asking first?

The reason I never post in the Political forum (EVER) is because many MANY
years ago, I made a personal decision not to get into political or religious
discussions with friends or family. I have my beliefs and I will not change
on either of these, and I get extremely upset when people stop discussing
and TELL YOU, you are stupid or crazy for believing _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _.

That said, there is a reason (IMO) some prayers get answered and others
don't. I've had it both ways and Thanked God for it always regardless of
the outcome. ... The issue is approaching not getting what you ask God
for, as God Not Answering you. ...... If you believe in God, and you ask him
and don't receive.... You got an answer.

A power of the individual (sort of like the idea of the 'power of positive thinking')?
It is simply a form of meditation and contemplation. In that regard it has been shown to have many biomedical benefits. It can lower blood pressure and focus the mind. Changes in your body can also be caused by hypnosis. I once watched Milton Erickson cause physical changes in a man's body. The totality of mind is extremely powerful.

As far as "group prayer" goes you can certainly say that voo doo works. It works as long as the recipient believes in it. That holds for good or ill. It can be an excellent trance induction tool. More esoterically you can view everything as an effect of vibration. The core of every atom, of every quark, is a vibratory string. Every sound you hear is a physical vibration. Everything you see is reflected light of varying frequencies. The question becomes, "Is it possible to cause changes in that state of time/matter/energy from a distance?" Quantum mechanics shows that we can change the direction of a particle's spin and thereby cause an instantaneous change in its partner even across vast space. If you couple group hypnosis with modern physics then I would certainly say that this would be the case. It is not something based on religion however. The same results could be achieved no matter whether the vehicle was a particular religion's prayers or laying on of hands or such things as Reike or therapeutic touch.

Either way you using natural laws. Individual superstitions and beliefs can be useful but there is no alien being somewhere dispensing it.

Didn't Moses pray to God to let him see the promised land, but God was angry with him and would listen no more?

I think the "power of prayer" may only work if the person being prayed for is deserving in Gods eyes.

As Spurt and others have said prayer is a two way street Yes/No. I have been on the receiving end of both. I received a no in the form or a job request but I knew better and took the job...you know what happened. It lasted 6 months and I was never so glad to get out of a place in my life. I now pay a lot more attention to prayer request for me and others and I have learned to be still and listen.

I am a living testament to the power of prayer.

I can promise you that it works, just not in the way a lot of people think. If you think prayer is simply a way of asking God for what you want, you're doing it wrong.

I am interested in hearing more details, whether here or in a PM. I love to read and listen to testimonies of this nature

Prayer is simply talking to God. It is pouring out your heart, and feelings, frustrations, and whatever else is on your mind. It is also asking God for things that you need. As Spurticus said, Yes is an answer, No, is an answer, and Not now is also an answer.

If a person has decided to follow Jesus Christ, and accept him as Savior, Lord, and Master in his life, he becomes part of the Bride of Christ. If you understand Hebrew law and customs, the bride becomes a part of the family (adoption), and has legal right to all that the son possesses. As a Christian, you become joint heirs with Jesus Christ, and therefore, have the right to everything he has. The Father did not grant Jesus everything he asked for (Father, if it be thy will, let this cup pass from me), and neither does he grant us everything we ask for.
Just as a parent knows what is better for the child than the child does, and does not give a child everything he asks for, God knows what is best for us, and also does not give us everything we ask for. However, as a parent enjoys giving their children good things that make the children happy, God enjoys giving us good things that make us happy.

He got to see it, but didn't get to enter it.

There's a side to prayer that has not been mentioned: the authority of the believer. There are lots of amazing stories about things that have happened, although most of the time it's so instant or remote, no one has filmed it.

And there are some people who (be it temporarily) have the ability to "heal" others. Even some of those who have been labeled fakes have had some miracles happen....likely because those wanting the healing were the ones with the faith to make it happen.

My step dad had his back healed in an instant years ago....the "700 Club" was playing in the background while he was folding clothes...he didn't believe in what they were doing until it happened to him.
And this was a taped show...

Pretty sure they did the PF like that so people couldn't complain to the mods about the topics, discussions, etc. If you request to join the PF, you know what you're getting into basically was the train of thought.
