Default NFL looking at Moving Extra Point to 25 Yard Line, Making it 43 Yards

NFL – NFL Media’s Judy Battista reports the NFL Competition Committee is in preliminary talks about placing the ball at the 25-yard line for the point-after attempt. That would make the extra point a 43-yard attempt.

The ball is currently spotted at the 2-yard line, a 20-yard chip shot that was converted 99.6 percent of the time during the 2013 season. The kick was so automatic that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell floated the idea in January of eliminating the PAT entirely.

“There is no consensus yet,” one member of the committee told Battista. “We could experiment in preseason, but we are not there yet.” Placing the ball at the 25-yard line would certainly increase the degree of difficulty for kickers. The conversion rate of field goals between 40 and 49 yards last season was 83 percent.

His argument is irrelevant. There are specialty type positions in a lot of sports that only get involved in a few plays but are essential to a team.

DH in Baseball. Goes up to bat 3-4 times a game
Closer in Baseball - Comes into a ballgame for 2 outs.
Goalie in Soccer / hockey

As for the Original Post. The Extra Point (at least in the NFL) is kind of a given. I would not mind to see them push it back a bit. Better idea then getting rid of it altogether.

You don't see coaches taking time out to ice a QB but they will do it for kickers, why is that because they have the easiest to play mental games with. Do you think that real men should drive the field in the two minute drill to have a tiny soccer player to go out with a chance to destroy the work of real men with one swing of the leg? I have seen many games lost because of kickers because they shanked the kick. 99.9% of kickers will run away from contact on kickoffs when they are the final man to try to stop the return for the TD, real football players seek contact not run from it.

We would start seeing a lot more 2 point conversions. Much more likely to go for two when facing a missable extra point.

I like the idea of getting rid of it. Reduces the risk of injury. I think TDs should be 7 points and coaches should have the option to attempt the PAT or not for an extra point. Then again that would conflict with the 2pt conversion. Moving it back seems dumb though.

How many injuries have you seen during a PAT?

Getting rid of it is a stupid Idea, moving it back a few yards actually makes sense.

I have seen many games won by a kicker.

I have seen many games lost because a receiver dropped a pass, QB threw an interception, etc. Your argument is irrelevant.

If anyone could do it they would'nt use a roster spot to keep a kicker on the team.

To me an XP is like throwing 4 balls for an intentional walk. It's going through the motions.

I'm open to the change but very cautious as how this could change things long term..

You want it to really get interesting. The guy who scores the touchdown is the one who has to kick the extra point. Now that would be exciting.
