Same here. I've always been a fan of 4-3 or our 4-2-5.

Default Lorenzo Ward and his staff were in Austin

Meeting with Strong and being able to do what Strong does are two different things. We shall see...

3-4 blows.

It will hurt our recruiting of DL, like it did UGA, who are now in the 4-3.

Maybe use it a couple of times or so to give the opposing "O" something else to look at, but we need to man up and go 4-3 and make the best of it. Kids need to grow up and do the job that they came here to do. Our youth in the defensive backfield means we need to be disruptive as possible, as quickly as possible, to QB's.

So are we converting to the 3-4 from this point forward, which is what a lot of posters in this thread seem to imply with all their criticisms, or are we just looking at utilizing the 3-4 for next season due to thin depth at DE, and then go back to the 4-2-5 like we've always been in 2015, once we restock back up at DE with Blackshear, etc.?

I think we are just looking to implement a couple 3-4 looks a game, not change the entire D schemes to 3-4. It takes years to change the entire scheme

My understanding is that it is more of a 3-3-5 than a 3-4. We have some spurs like Larenz Bryant and Jordan Diggs who have gotten bigger and can play LB with Skai and Kaiwan.

Yeah people are being way too dramatic. We have so many linebackers with experience and so few linemen (especially ends.) It only makes sense to at least prepare something that favors our depth.

Strong runs a 3-3-5...not a 3-4. Its not a huge variation from what we run now. Just a tweak to fit the personnel we have. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Maybe this has something to do with guys like Johnson and Cooper. 3 man front might not be a bad idea. Except, Do we have a true SEC caliber NT?

Perhaps the 3-4 would get an extra good DT on the field in some situations, but our present outside linebackers would have to be replaced by fast DE's. I can't think of a single ILB who showed good coverage skills this year, and the outside guys became just adequate at the end of the season. The 50 would get an extra DT out there, and all it would cost us is the hybrid spur which was shaky at best most of the year, and still showed a lack of stopping power after both guys stopped missing so many assignments and tackles. Seeing more than an occasional 3-4 this fall would shock me, though they might play around with it some this spring. Our linebacking corps is barely weighty enough for the 4-3 and really light for the 3-4. All that "athleticism" talk won't make up for a lack of stopping power and likely missed assignments if the schemes get more complicated.

You think were going to play 3 DT and 0 DE? No. We'd put in our best big DT our our two best big DEs and a tweener DE/LB.

We've got two DE over 255, Turner and Dixon 44. Our bigger DT's are as tall, and much bigger. Thomas isn't in yet. We don't have a big linebacker (over 235). Based on stopping power and strength, I don't think we've got a single linebacker who can handle the two extra linemen, a TE and possibly a fullback thrown at them on running plays. Who among our linebackers (and spur) showed decent coverage skills last year (the 4 or 5 picks were tipped balls and Taj throwing badly under pressure).

I don't know about his man to man skills, but Skai Moore plays an excellent cover two from his LB position. He picked Wisconsin because of his rapid drop back and hand-eye ball skills

Kaiwan Lewis and Jonathan Walton are over 235. With a true NT role, as I understand, should take two of your O-Linemen.

Bottom line is Ward is acknowledging our DE production is not going to be the same as it has the last 4+ years. With the DT's we have having a good way to leverage that talent is certainly something to pursue.

Not a coach, but I can see our LB's being Lewis, Walton and Moore in this scheme for an average of 227 lbs. Throw our best three DT's on the field, good options.

They are just looking for ways to generate a pass rush.

A 3-4 or 3-3-5 is not going to be our base defense.

i look at it as a way to get more blitz packages on the field to make up for losing two elite pass rushers, not something that will replace our base defense. we did it a fair bit as a change up back when ej got here and norwood was still here. so are we looking at a hybrid de/olb to be the difference or just adding another backer. there are options, but im sure everyone hopes one or two of our linemen play at an all sec level by fall.

Default Re: Lorenzo Ward and his staff were in Austin

What will be interesting is will Ward use sort of the tweeter types like Cooper, Turner, Johnson and Harris as the 4th LB(counting the Spur)?

Or will it just be an extra LB?

Meaning would it be :
DE: Dixon
DT: Surrat
DE: Thomas
OLB: Moore
Mike: Lewis
OLB: Walton (or a DE like Johnson here, or maybe BAW)
Spur: Golightly

Another thing that is puzzling is that we have so many DTs and DEs on the team. We have a solid 3 deep at each position. 4 deep at DE.

This. We have been recruiting guys to play in a 4-2-5 / 4-3 defense and that is what we are going to stick with. I think the 3-4 idea is more to throw a few different wrinkles in our defensive game plan. We don't have the horses to implement a 3-4.

Ward will have to shake things up on the DL this year. This will be a weakness for us, especially in putting pressure on the passer with just the front 4. I'm afraid we'll struggle on 3rd downs this year. Hope not.

If you watched our last few games last year, ward employed a lot of tree line fronts all of a sudden.

It allows us to take advantage of our depth at DT and LB. while also keeping a lot of speed on the field because of using a nickel backfield.

Line:
Dixon jr. (DT)
Dixon (DE)
Turner (DE)

Lbackers:
Lewis
Holloman
Moore

Safety:
Elder
Williams
Golightly

CB's:
Take ur pick of the best two.
