Right, but you still need to be vigilant and ensure they drop off. That date is just generated from the time the account was open or went delinquent. I have had 2 instances where they kept reporting after 7 years or the date listed; I hate to dispute the negative instance for it to be removed...and it was.

That is why I suggested earlier to not pay off or mess with any debt older than 5 years...since it will fall off in another 2 years and making contact or paying could "restart" the entire cycle. Plus the money you spend paying them off when they have already hurt you for 5 years could go towards other places helping you financially.

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/

Is free. Go there, and apply for one of your reports. You will be given the option to download it at the end. Sift through that, and figure our who all you owe money to, and get them paid up to date. Three months later, go back to that site and do the whole process for one of the other credit agencies. rinse and repeat.

Since you are allowed to access one free report from each agency once per year, spacing out it will allow you to access one every few months.

The way I suggest you handle your credit is to get everything paid off first. Contact your creditors, and make arrangements to make that happen. Once you have done that, then and only then, are you ready to increase your score. You can do that by getting some revolving credit (i.e. credit cards) and using them but keeping the balances low. After a few years of doing that, you can start applying for credit increases. Generally speaking the higher your buying power, the better. Just make sure to keep those balances low and keep your installment loans (i.e. car payments) at a minimum. And whatever you do, try your best to stay away from payday loan places unless you just really don't like having money in your pocket.

Doing what I just typed brought me from a 560ish score to a 780ish score in about a 6 year span.

One thing I have found is that the free sites aren't accurate. I like myfico.com it is accurate and gives u the ability to dispute. It also has a tool that u can get a new card or Pay off a loan or whatever and see how it effects your score
